Repetitious and irrelevant

I'm an experienced Network Engineer. Recently I got into Nexus switches and decided I'd add CCNA DC to my long list of alphabet soup. The online videos I have access to were all pretty much short on details and can only be described as quick overview. So I looked for a book. At the time this was pretty much the only one for the 916 exam (911 looks like a light weight repeat of CCNA R/S with Nexus as the tool).

First, let's note the authors. There are 5 of them. And it shows. On some pages it seems that 5 different people wrote something, and they just pasted it all one after another on that same page, in no particular order. There are chapters that go on forever on topics that are completely unrelated to the Exam Topics found on the Cisco web site. For example, it describes in detail Soft Zoning and compares it to Hard Zoning. In the end, Cisco doesn't touch Soft Zoning, and never has for the 14 years their product has been on the market. Not only that, the amount of space they use up in the book on this could have been cut down from a couple pages to just a few sentences (Soft zoning is like DNS not giving an initiator name resolution, and Hard Zoning is like an ACL)

In fact, as another reviewer noted, it appears that much of the book is Cisco Documentation has been copied and pasted into a book and printed out. I cannot tell you how many times I've read the same passages over again in the same chapter, let alone different chapters.

SInce this is about the only book in town, you're stuck. The way I've been dealing with it is keeping the Exam Topics page handy as I read the thing front to back. It's a lot of pages, but as I hit something I don't understand, or feel is not relevant, I check the Exam Topics and ask myself is there any where this could fit? If not, skip it. For example it talks about Cisco Prime. This is a product Cisco sells. It might fit in section 6.0 DC Network Services, but for the fact that is more about network services found on the hardware this test examines, and not separately purchased software products. And then the fact that that section is worth 1% of your score on the exam, and yeah, I'll skip those 20 pages.

When I skip something I might go find the marketing material on the Cisco Youtube channel or their site. I do geek out on this stuff, but not enough to read through poorly cut and pasted passages from the Cisco Documentation CD.

Your other good resrouce is Cisco's Techwise TV. A lot of marketing material, but for CCNA, that is a good place to start. For example there was a 100 page chapter on MDS product line in the book. It dug into all this minutiae of packet forwarding decisions in the switch. Techwise TV had the lead product manager for MDS explain it in 10 minutes 100 times more clearly, without repeating himself 5 times (remember, there are 5 authors listed on this book).

The other thing to note about the authors are their CCIE numbers. These guys have been around a LONG time. And again, it shows in the book. They spend an outrageous amount of time reviewing computing history, and very little in comparison discussing current technology.

I'm ordering the Sybex book, that wasn't available when I got this one. I usually trust the Cisco Press books better, but they have really let me down this time. I'll update the review when I can after I read: CCNA Data Center: Introducing Cisco Data Center Technologies Study Guide: Exam 640-916

Terrible for actually trying to study for the CCNA. Unfocused and much of it is copy and pasted straight from Cisco's documentation, which is available free.

In the late Enlightenment, military writers explored the psychological foundations of war as a means of stimulating a new military spirit among the troops.

The Enlightenment was, however, not the only cultural influence upon war during this century. Religion, the traditional values of the ancien regime, and local values all contributed to the culture of force. When Europeans engaged in military encounters with peoples in other parts of the globe, cultural interchange inevitably occurred as well. Further, there is a revolutionary element that one must consider when defining the military culture. The result of all these factors was a creative tension in 18th century warfare and an extraordinarily complex military culture.

Bible Prophesy Revealed

My Community Bible Study Teacher had often made the statement that the Book of Daniel in the Old Testament is the key to the rest of the Bible. Now, that was compelling enough for me to go home and read it. The history given in the beginning of the book was easy to understand, but the prophesy given from this book of the Bible was very complicated. I didn't get it at all. Then someone told me about Clarence Larkin, so I ordered several of his books including this one. As I read, I thanked God for his insights. His Book of Daniel explained everything in an easy readable way. It was his last of several bible teaching books. This Baptist Preacher was dying but held on until he finished his Book of Daniel. I'm thankful for that, because I am one who didn't understand, and now I do. And, by the way, my Bible Study Teacher had been right.

Donald Raleigh's Soviet Baby Boomers traces the collapse of the Soviet Union and the transformation of Russia into a modern, highly literate, urban society through the fascinating life stories of the country's first post-World War II, Cold War generation.

For this book, Raleigh has interviewed sixty 1967 graduates of two "magnet" secondary schools that offered intensive instruction in English, one in Moscow and one in provincial Saratov. Part of the generation that began school the year the country launched Sputnik into space, they grew up during the Cold War, but in a Soviet Union increasingly distanced from the excesses of Stalinism. In this post-Stalin era, the Soviet leadership dismantled the Gulag, ruled without terror, promoted consumerism, and began to open itself to an outside world still fearful of Communism. Raleigh is one of the first scholars of post-1945 Soviet history to draw extensively on oral history, a particularly useful approach in studying a country where the boundaries between public and private life remained porous and the state sought to peer into every corner of people's lives. During and after the dissolution of the USSR, Russian citizens began openly talking about their past, trying to make sense of it, and Raleigh has made the most of this new forthrightness. He has created an extraordinarily rich composite narrative and embedded it in larger historical narratives of Cold War, de-Stalinization, "overtaking" America, opening up to the outside world, economic stagnation, dissent, emigration, the transition to a market economy, the transformation of class, ethnic, and gender relations, and globalization.

Including rare photographs of daily life in Cold War Russia, Soviet Baby Boomers offers an intimate portrait of a generation that has remained largely faceless until now.

Soviet Baby Boomers: An Oral History of Russia's Cold War Generation

As one of the "Soviet baby-boomers" interviewed by the author, I'd been dying to see the book in print. The result of this fascinating project exceeded my expectations. For me, as it is, I'm sure, for my former classmates, it is a nostalgic trip down memory lane. For an outsider it will be an eye opener. I've lived and worked in the United States for over twenty years and I know from experience that the Americans' view of the Soviet Union is still, by and large, incomplete, at best, or distorted, at worst. Since the end of the Cold War, there appeared quite a few informative publications about the country: its economy, culture, politics, etc. But there was (until now!) a virtual vacuum of accurate information about its people. What makes this book unique is that, drawing from the conversations with numerous Soviet baby boomers, a generation born after a devastating war, it provides a rare insight into their lives, their values and aspirations. It might come as a huge surprise to some Western readers that those were formed not only by the values instilled in them by the country they were born and lived in but also by the Western world that seemingly they were shut off from by the Iron Curtain. Why and how they had access to that world, especially during the tumultuous 60's, why they enthusiastically and wholeheartedly supported Gorbachev's "perestroika" in the 80's is one of the most intriguing, in my view, parts of this amazing book. American baby-boomers are in for a follow-up surprise: despite the differences, they and their Soviet counterparts have a great deal in common. A realization that, I believe, is vital in the world we live in, the world of today and tomorrow.

Donald J. Raleigh crafts a highly accessible, yet sophisticated portrait of the Soviet Union’s “Baby Boomer” generation in this book. Throughout its pages, Raleigh delves into the lives of ordinary Soviets in a time during which the society and the world in which they lived were undergoing new and fascinating changes that influenced their lives in diverse and unique ways.
For most America Baby Boomers, as well as younger generations, thinking about life in the Soviet Union prior to 1991 calls up images of a totalitarian state ruled by a supreme, authoritarian leader who silenced all opposition and interfered deeply in the personal, private lives of Soviet citizens. Nonetheless, Raleigh uses the memories and accounts that he personally collected from ordinary Russians from two Russian cities, Saratov and Moscow, to show that life in the Soviet Union during the second half of the twentieth century was remarkably similar to life in the United States during the period. This books challenges the mainstream American idea of what life was like in the Soviet Union since Stalin’s death. For every informed and curious American who wants to know more about life in a country that is utterly foreign to most of us, this is an absolute must read!
The books greatest strength lies in the way in which Raleigh allows the Soviet Baby Boomers to tell their own story by speaking for themselves. He provides historical contextualization in order to orient his reader to the period in question, but allows the Baby Boomer’s words to carry the narrative. And carry the narrative they do! This book is and will continue to be a model for historical writing that asks important questions of ordinary people about how they experienced history. I would highly recommend it to any type of reader who wants to learn more about Russia in a way that brings to life the unique and diverse experiences of ordinary Russians.

Through Don, I discovered a second cousin

Fascinating exposure to my age cohort in Russia who experienced the Soviet system and its break-up. The graduates of magnate schools 20 and 42 were raised by parents who had lived through WW II and Stalin's purges and were professionals. Their parents tried their best to provide a better life for their children and to prepare them for career success within the Soviet system. Because both parents worked, in many families the Boomers were also influenced by grandparents and nannies from small villages who cared for them while the parents were at work. The first had fond memories of pre-Revolutionary Russia, and both clung to the old religion. Hard working and careerist, these Boomer succeeded at school and went into the system of guaranteed lifetime jobs. At the same time, they were being infuenced by the Beattles and the bleed-through of western European radio broadcasts, and in some cases, visits to Eastern Bloc satelites where living conditions were much better than in Russia, and there was less state interference in peoples' lives. These windows, and the leg-up their command of English (superior upon their high school graduation to what was offered at the university level), prepared them to start questioning the system, and ulitmately contributed to its demise. It's an interesting book, especially if you have Russian roots and/or are a Babyboomer.

We met Don Raleigh on a university alumni river cruise of Russia. I had rewritten my name on my name badge in Cyrillic letters. When Don saw it he said "Vic Bary? I just wrote a book about Soviet Babyboomers and the first woman I interviewed talked about a predecessor with the same last name who was instrumental in the 19th century industrialization of Russia." I replied, "That would be great grandfather Alexander". He got a copy of his book which had a photo of Alexander B. Bary, and I got a photo of a promotional map of Russia which had a photo of Alexander Bary. It was the same photo! Thanks to Don, I've been introduced to my second cousin in Moscow and have been in regular communication with her ever since.

One of the best

I'm not finished with it yet, but I've read enough of it that -- even if I never read another word -- it was worth the effort.
Prior to my purchase of this book, I read 'A Teaching Seminar with Milton H. Erickson' which was a good book for getting to know the man and his personality. So, I'm glad I read it first. But this book is far and away the better book. It is the one to read as a training manual and in-depth study of Erickson and his techniques.

This was the very first book I read, many years ago, by Milton Erickson et al. I don't know what happened to it. but I just received another copy---hardcover, in excellent condition, and I've started re-reading it. And now I'm getting even more out of it than I did the first time!

For community leaders involved in economic development Mr Kageyama's book is a breath of fresh air and offers a way to capture and articulate what makes one city more attractive, more lovable, and ultimately more economically sustainable than the next.

Inspiring Love of Cities

Having lived and worked in Boston, Providence, and Tampa as an Architect I have seen many of the positives and negatives regarding city and placemaking. In this book, Peter brings to light the idea that the single most important tool to making a city grow and become livable is love. Through inspiring stories from around the country he shows that not just established cities and towns are worthy of this love but that those cities that seem small or troubled have the most opportunities for the hard working creators to make the greatest impact. Love will reap the best harvest in these cities that need it most.

For those out there that wonder how they can get involved or make their place better, this book provides true examples of how to do so and will inspire you to make it happen. It's a great read and I wish more would take his words to heart. Our cities would be much better places to live if we all did.

FOR THE LOVE OF INSIGHT

This book took a topic that interests me, and unexpectedly made it even more interesting to me. The author clearly has a passion for his topic, and manages to convey a lot more in the way of interesting ideas and insights that I frankly expected. For example, I have been for years lamenting America's evolution into what I call "strip mall hell", but Kageyama provides a well-researched and surprisingly interesting time line....a succession of various motives, legislation, and even prejudices that got us here. Better yet, he presents a path forward so that we can become more than just a "functional" society, and get back to what made us love cities before we went awry. Anyone who loves the great metropolises of the world (past, present or future) and wants to belong to them deserves to read this insightful and often witty book.
