A novel but effective approach

When I agreed to write an honest review in exchange for a copy of Merrick Rosenberg's "The Chameleon" I had no idea what to expect. Upon glancing at it I became aware that it had to do with personality types and how people of different types can learn to work effectively. At first I was a bit skeptical of the approach taken by the author. The book consists of a series of "fables," vignettes that feature four different species of birds, each of which represents a personality type. The first bird is Ivory the parrot. She is fun-loving, sociable, and lives in the moment. At the opposite extreme is Carl the owl, who is scheduled and organized and seemingly does everything by the book. These two are like oil and water, in that Carl cannot abide Ivory's almost total lack of a schedule and her unwillingness to follow instructions to the letter. Dee, the eagle, is the broad-picture person. Like Carl, she wants things done her way, but unlike Carl, she is not detail oriented but instead is often grandiose. Finally, Simon the dove is kindhearted and others-centered, concerned with the welfare of those around him. Along with these four birds are two chameleons, Xenia, the teacher, and her student, Xandu. From time to time they step into the conflicts that arise between these birds and impart understanding of how these birds can solve their conflicts by better understanding each other.
Altogether there are some 20 fables, classified by seasons of the year. At first I wasn't sure that the author would be able to impart any really serious insight through this approach. But as I read through a few of them I began to see how cleverly Rosenberg has woven in the lessons he wants to impart. And before long I started recognizing myself and others in the interactions between these birds. By the end of the book I was convinced that this could be a very good approach to encouraging more positive relations between different personalities, whether at home, at the office, at school, or elsewhere, and how this method could be used in team building.
The process is also aided by a section following each fable entitled "Chameleon Wisdom." In it Rosenberg applies the lessons in the fable just covered to show how those lessons can aid people with different personality types in understanding each other. This in turn is followed by several "Tips," very brief pointers that summarize the main takeaways from each fable.
By the time I had finished the book I was convinced that the method Rosenberg uses in this book (and in his workshops/seminars) is sheer genius.

Life Changing Philosophy by Merrick Rosenberg

Merrick Rosenberg's book, The Chameleon, Life-Changing Wisdom for Anyone with a Personality or Knows Someone Who Does,
is a book which could give you a new perspective on yourself, your family, and the people in your life (whether you work with them or just deal with them). This book has a lot of charm along with a steady hand on its subject. It uniquely bases its story on a series of fables. The star is a Chameleon, Xenia, and her student, little Xandu, who impart a lot of learning to a series of birds in a forest where they all live. There are eagles, who represent the determined personality, there are doves, who represent the kindness and gentleness which some people naturally have, there are owls, who are organized and conscientious, and there are parrots, life-loving and sociable.
The book begins in the forest in the first season: Spring. Each season will be covered and five fables per season will teach us new lessons about how to be the most understanding people we can possibly be. If a bird can represent you as a personality, you will see it illustrated here. Some of us are more than one personality type but that is to be expected.
Another thing the reader will learn is that his or her viewpoint is not necessarily the only way of seeing things. This book, which is an excellent guidebook for people in business, will assist us to understand our personalities. If you are an direct and strongminded "eagle", and someone in your office is a softhearted "dove, you are not going to get too far ordering them around from your point of view. You are going to have to shift positions and see what it is like to be a dove before you pass judgement. Understanding plays a big part in this book.
The book's major characters, the Chameleon and her young companion, serve to expand our understanding on how to perceive differences between who we are and others. In each section, there are chapters with fables. At the end of each fable, there will be a quote called, "Chameleon Wisdom". One of my favorites was from Robert A. Heinlein, and another was from George Bernard Shaw. Steve Jobs is in there, too.
There is no absence of humor in this book, nor is there any absence of compassion, however if you wish to understand the fine line between adapting to your situation and attempting to get your situation to adapt to you, this gentle-hearted book (which ultimately pulls no punches) may just become the wind under your wings.

I appreciated the tidbit of chameleon wisdom that was part of each chapter.

The author, a keynote speaker. entrepreneur and thought leader on personality styles, makes the concept of DISC Behavior Analysis come alive through 22 entertaining fables. He does so by having an all-knowing chameleon guide an eagle, parrot, dove and owl through a journey that you'll also be able to relate to your own life.
I especially liked his description of something called the Home Rule; i.e., treat others how they need to be treated.
In addition, I appreciated the tidbit of chameleon wisdom that was part of each chapter; e.g., this from Pema Chodron:
If we learn to open our hearts, anyone, including the people who drive us crazy, can be our teacher.
Lastly, I thought Rosenberg was spot on when discussing creativity and in making this statement:
The only difference between creative people and uncreative people is that creative people understand how to express their creativity.
As he did with each chapter, he then concluded with a series of useful tips--including:
KNOW THAT YOU ARE CREATIVE. Even if you feel you haven't created anything in a while, you are more imaginative than you think you are. The capacity for creativity resides within you.
IDENTIFY AND ALTER disempowering beliefs about your creativity.
And:
DO THINGS THAT INSPIRE YOU, and share your creativity with the world.
