Now as then a cultural curiosity, the resurrected reminiscences of 1920s Latin Quarter model "Kiki" appear with the original prefaces by artist Tsuguharu Foujita and Ernest Hemingway, the latter of whom described her as "a woman who was never a lady at any time." The French edition was released in 1929; an English translation was denied entry by U.S. customs the next year on grounds of obscenity, owing to the reproductions of paintings by Foujita and photographs by Man Ray that accompanied the slim text. An illegitimate village waif raised in poverty by her grandmother, Alice Prin was born in 1901. At 12 she joined her mother in Paris only to go off on her own at 14 as model for, then mistress to, a generation of sculptors, painters and photographers. Merely an amateur at more professional entertainment, she nevertheless sang in sleazy clubs, appeared in nine films, danced in Fernand Leger's Ballet Mecanique. Offered freely, her svelte body brought her fame without fortune. When journalist Henri Brocca arranged for publication of her memoir, and news spread that for 30 francs, one could acquire an autographed book and a kiss from Kiki, men discarded their dignity in the rush. Once depression and war put an end to her brand of frivolity, she contended that all she required was "an onion, a bit of bread, and a bottle of red," and she usually found "somebody to offer me that." Nearly forgotten, she survived into 1951. Putnam's 1930 translation evokes Kiki's childlike qualities. Insubstantial despite the prefaces, dozens of illustrations, including the author's own naif pictures, and?as supplement?three autobiographical articles for a Paris paper in 1950 that repeat much of the memoir, Kiki's offering is more artifact than art. Kluver and Martin are the coauthors of Kiki's Paris.

This is Kiki in Kiki's own voice, no one could say it better.This is a wonderful book for those who love Bohemian Paris, and even those who don't.

Souvenirs of Kiki's Memoirs

Being a veritable Kiki virgin before I read this book, I found Kiki's Memoirs more than helpful in showing the atmosphere of 1920's Paris. I did, however, agree with Ernest Hemingway's sentiments from his introdution-it is impossible to translate Kiki's words very well. It seems like Samuel Putnam was unable to get more than four sentences out without putting in an exclamation mark. This breaks the narrative up considerably. I would have given this book three stars, but I loved the Man Ray photos in it. The real strength of this book lies in the artwork.

Outstanding Book for All Humans

A Dog's Journey is the sequel of A Dog's Purpose by W. Bruce Cameron. This book is truly amazing ,and I loved every page and chapter. The story starts with Buddy a good dog, an old dog from A Dog's Purpose. Buddy thought his purpose in life was completed by loving and caring for Ethan. Ethan was his human in A Dog's Purpose but he died. Buddy soon realized he was able to love and care for more than one human when he meets Clarity June (C.J.) Ethan's granddaughter. C. J. was left unattended by her mother, Gloria, a miserable, selfish person and gets into a lot of trouble. Buddy sees her needing help and knows Ethan would want him to watch over her. Buddy is reborn several times throughout the book and comes back as male/female dogs meeting many people and having many purposes. His main journey back each time is to locate C. J. because he feels she really needs him. This book reflects many thoughts through a dog's mind, and is a wonderful book for ALL dog lovers, non-dog lovers, and ALL HUMANS. This book left me smiling, laughing, and shedding many tears, but when I was done I had the true feeling of how a dog, or any pet may feel. They love humans unconditionally, and are sincerely loyal wonderful "fur babies."

Nothing can meet or beat "A Dog's Purpose" (to me)

I wanted to love it... I really did. I loved "A Dog's Purpose" more than any book I ever read... but this one is just not as good. I liked the dog(s) but not the female lead character, her life or her family ... most of the book I felt sad. I wanted to finish it to get it over with (I'm sorry!).
I'm glad it has good reviews from so many, maybe it's just the place I'm in life right now; I admire Bruce Cameron and what he has written.

Beautifully Book by Bruce Cameron

I read the first book "A Dog's Purpose"a couple of years ago. I just now finished this one in a few days because I couldn't put it down. It was thought provoking, contemplative and makes you wonder all the possibilities. The ride taken with the dog's journey makes you think of life's lessons on an even deeper level. There is laughter, tears and many other emotions experienced. I loved this book so much and loved the ending. I think I will now go hug my three Border Collies and Heeler. Two of my Border Collies are R.E.A.D. Program Dogs and I had a former Therapy and Crisis Response Border Collie. After reading this their work took an even deeper meaning to me.

Kate O'Brien's The Land of Spices tells the story of a woman who betrayed herself as a young girl--becoming a nun as a reaction to the shock of discovering her father's homosexuality. O'Brien brilliantly shows how Catholic doctrine made it impossible for the protagonist to interpret her father's homosexuality as anything other than a violent betrayal. In cutting off her father whom she loved more than anyone in the world, the protagonist cuts herself off from her own heart and proceeds to live an emotionally hollow existence as a nun. While rapidly rising through the ranks of the international order she belongs to, she is appointed to run a convent in Ireland. As an Englishwoman in Ireland, she feels more lost than ever and yearns to quit her post. Then she begins to have a relationship with a 5 year boarder, who is there because of her own family problems. The little girl reminds her of being a happy little girl with her father. As the nun grows to love the young girl, she gains the ability to understand that she still loves her father and that she has made a terrible mistake, both in judging him and in choosing life as a nun out of fear. This is a moving book well worth reading.

Coming of Age in an Irish Convent

In a convent school in the Ireland of the 1930s, O'Brien weaves the parallel tales of a sensitive young pupil and the lonely mother superior who sees promise in her. Anna Murphey, daughter of an alcoholic father, weak mother, and dictatorial grandmother, finds solace only in the companionship of her younger brother, Charlie. Away at school from a young age, Anna's academic talents create a barrier between her and her classmates, and they run her afoul of certain of the most jealous nuns. Compounding Anna's problems is the fact that she is emotionally isolated from her mostly useless family. Her drunk father, her dominating grandmother, and her spineless mother all exist outside of Anna's emotional world.

O'Brien is clearly cognizant of the dangers of convent education for sensitive young women like Anna. The book suggests that loneliness and unhappiness is the lot of the thinking, feeling woman, as epitomized by Anna and the mother superior. Loneliness is endemic. The only happy women in the book are some of the simpering, unthinking elder students.

The book also provides a strong indictment against the provincialism of Irish nationalism. The Irish nationalists in O'Brien's work are univerally short-sighted and unsure of why they support their cause. In short, they are incapable of seeing the forest for the trees.

This is an interesting, thinking novel, which provides a fascinating look at life in a convent school.

This is a great book, thorough, easy to figure out and has downright clinical abilities. You'll be able to understand and communicate with more confidence and less lawsuits.

Excellent. For the past 15 years I have bought 2-3 copies per year to give to students on our medical missions to Ecuador or the Dominican Republic. And they have used it, and given me good reviews! This has a very good balance of what's needed on such trips. It's a large-format paperback though, and I wish the newer editions had remained the smaller size of the older ones for traveling purposes.

About the Author
Dan O'Hair is Professor and Chair of the Department of Communication at the University of Oklahoma. He received his Ph.D. in 1982 from The University of Oklahoma in communication. He has published over forty articles in business and communication journals and has authored and edited six books focusing on communication. O'Hair has served as a consultant to numerous businesses, government agencies, and non-profit organizations. He is the former president of the El Paso chapter of the American Society for Training and Development and has served on the editorial board of five communication journals including the Journal of Business Communication and is the current editor of the Journal of Applied Communication Research. He is principal investigator and course administrator for the Department of Defense's Joint Course in Communication, an intensive eight-week course in advanced communication study.

Lynda Dee Dixon is Associate Professor in the Department of Interpersonal Communication at Bowling Green State University. She has served as Graduate Coordinator in the School of Communication Studies and as Faculty Associate in the Graduate College. Previously, she has been on the faculty at the University of Oklahoma, University of New Mexico, and Indiana University-South Bend. A Cherokee from Oklahoma, she began her research by studying the health communication of Oklahoma American Indian women. Her research has focused on diversity issues in health, education, and professional organizations. Dixon's publications include a co-edited book on women in prison, book chapters, and journal articles. Her three most recent journal articles have focused on the effects of architecture and posted signs in federal health care facilities for American Indians, and the phenomenon of rap music. She teaches graduate and undergraduate courses in health communication, intercultural communication, and organizational communication.

Hooked!

I listened to this one on a long road trip for a conference. When I got out of the car to eat and take a break I couldn't get it out of my head. The story is that good. I rushed through my meal so I could get back to it. If you love Warhammer 40K you will love this or even if you love great action scifi you will not be let down. It's great to be there at the birth of a new faith for The Empire of Man. I suggest all of the Garro audio dramas, they are very well done. Listen to Oath of Moment, Sword of Truth and Legion of One in that order.

Great Story

I greatly enjoy both the 40k landscape and as an extension the Horus Heresy series. These audiodramas are great. I get to keep on driving down the road while still pumping 40k into my veins. I only wish they had the verbal track a little louder compared to the background. Between road noise and my not spectacular hearing, sometimes I have to replay parts a few times to get all the words figured out.

Elie Virgile Chrysostome is Professor of International Business and Strategic Management at the State University of New York, Plattsburgh, USA and Director of the CEDIMES Institute USA. He is also a Research Associate at the Montreal Local Global Research Group at Concordia University, Canada and at the Walter Somers Chair of International Strategic Management at HEC-Montreal, Canada. He was the chair of the International Business Division of the Association of Administrative Sciences of Canada (ASAC).

Rick Molz is Professor of Management at the John Molson School of Business of Concordia University, Canada. His research interests lie in international business strategy, particularly in developing, emerging and transitional economies. Being in complete agreement with this idea, the first thing this reviewer should say is that she doesn't have the time to read a whole book about setting boundaries. Although important, this topic could have been adequately covered as a couple of chapters in a larger book on life management. Mental health counselor Katherine (Boundaries) discusses setting boundaries with friends, relatives, lovers, and exes. Other reasonable topics include anger, intimacy, sex, and divorce. Among the more frivolous chapters are those covering tidiness, food, Internet, and therapist boundaries. The author does give helpful examples of each type of boundary, with advice on where to draw the line. The topics seem so specialized, though, that audience appeal is limited. Chapter 1: What Are Boundaries?

Pause a moment. Stand on the earth and sense the spiral of your life. You have not come to this place by chance. All your choices have brought you here.

You created this life by the people you let in and the people you shut out, by giving your time to the quests that matter and by letting hours trickle toward lesser goals, through the pursuits to which you gave your energy, by the pressures to which you gave heed.

Every decision you've ever made, step by step, brought you to this pass. In short, your boundaries -- or your defenses -- created a corridor through which your life moved.

What is a boundary? A boundary is a limit that promotes integrity. At the most elemental level, your skin marks your physical limits. If it is ripped, the integrity of your body is threatened. Your cells hold their shape because a membrane contains them. Your nerves are sheathed. Your brain is protected by blood and bone.

Thousands of other boundaries might also be yours, protecting every treasured aspect of your life -- your relationships, your time, your home, the way you do things, your children, your priorities, your health, and your money. These boundaries are unseen, held in place by your decisions and actions.

A boundary is a limit. By the limits you set, you protect the integrity of your day, your energy and spirit, the health of your relationships, the pursuits of your heart. Each day is shaped by your choices. When you violate your own boundaries or let another violate them, stuffing spills out of your life.

A boundary is like a membrane that keeps an organism intact. It lets positive things through. It keeps harmful things out. In this way it operates quite differently from a defense, which indiscriminately keeps things out.

Boundaries provide a clear moral compass. They keep us on track. They protect the important, tender parts of ourselves.

Look at the parts of your life that work, that have integrity. This wholeness comes from the limits you have set to protect them.

Any part of your life that is not working can be improved by boundaries. Whether the organism is you, your body, your health, a friendship, your marriage, your work, or your energy, its integrity can be strengthened by boundaries.

This book is a boundary handbook. It can help you discover the walls that are missing as well as rules or customs that confine you to one place, preventing you from occupying the wider spaces. It will also expose defenses that you may have erected in place of healthy boundaries -- defenses that may do a lot of harm to you and your relationships.

Excellent book on boundaries and codependence!

When my counselor recommended me to read this book, I had no clue what I was in for. This book opened my eyes to all of the unhealthy patterns we have in our relationships and where they come from. It has literally changed my life. Thanks to this book, I am more in touch with myself and have more fulfilling relationships with others in which we truly care about one another. If you'd like to learn about yourself and are really ready for some positive change (it will be painful at first but it is definitely worth it), try this book. The other book I highly recommend on this topic is "The Ever-Transcending Spirit" by Toru Sato. Sato has an unbelievable ability to show us how complex things like internal conflict and relationships work in the simplest ways. Good luck on your transformation!

This should be required reading for everyone on the planet!

I am in my 40s and read this book with the eye-opening wonder of a very clueless child. So many times I read things here that were a complete revelation to me and I'd think to myself, wow, I'm allowed to say that to someone?!?! Yes, we are allowed to speak our own truth and put our needs above our habit of pleasing others at our own expense! I like that she writes about different topics and gives examples of what to say when someone crosses the line. This is info I can put to work and have already. She also dissected some conversations, pointing out where someone was being manipulative. I can now see that I have been manipulated in conversations and it was such a light bulb moment to understand how it was happening and how to handle it in the future. I raved about the book to friends while I was reading it and three of them wanted to borrow it when I was done. When I finished, I decided I couldnt bear to let go of my copy so I bought three copies as gifts. Money well spent. I intend to buy two more copies for my teenage niece and nephew as well. If everyone could read this book, ESPECIALLY WOMEN, the planet would be a safer, saner and more peaceful place.

My whole life I have struggled with boundary setting with others, for fear of the "consequences" of having a voice. Excellent book in case studies

I am suprised that no one has reviewed this book- I have found it very useful to have on my bookshelf. The book is a summary of a time series forecasting competition that was held a few years ago. The competition used four different kinds of time series (for example, one data set was chaotic from measurements of a laser, and another was a multidimensional physiological times series of heart beats and respiration, etc.).

The strength of the book is that it represents several ways to approach real time series prediction strategies in a concrete way - Invaluable, especially to researchers who may be just beginning.

FYI- I think the data is available on the world wide web, so it is possible to perform the analysis that is described in the book.
