A Word to the Wise

Where were Gary Winters and "What Your Boss Never Told You" when I really needed it? Here I am at the end of my career and I finally read a management book that encapsulates 40 years of learning the hard way. It is not so much a "how to" book as a "heads-up things to think about" book. I might have titled it "A Word to the Wise". The author doesn't try to provide pat solutions to every management situation, but makes the reader aware of what to look for to avoid managerial pitfalls. I couldn't find a single chapter where I didn't have an anecdote that supported author's assertions. As I began each chapter I tried to anticipate what I thought were important points to make and I was not once disappointed. It doesn't matter where you are in your management career "What Your Boss Never Told You" is a great starting place for a new manager or an excellent refresher for the seasoned veteran.

Like Operating a Floor Sander!

This is an excellent, valuable book. I've read numerous management and supervision books over the years. Some were notable. Most of the others quickly became forgettable. "What Your Boss Never Told You" is one of the very best I've come across, and here's why. Gary Winters has a wonderful knack for getting right to the point, concisely and clearly. So, as a "read," the 120 pages of WYBNTY breeze along nicely. The other equally important aspect of this book is that Winters has made these management stories and lessons REAL. There is virtually nothing intellectual or scholastic about this book - and I seriously mean this as a high complement. Winters takes us for a walk through real workplaces, with real stories and real people trying to figure out how to become better managers. This book is chock full of practical tangible, useful wisdom. I've been a manager for fifteen years, and I learned a lot from the lessons and stories in WYBNTY. It's right up there with "Leadership Jazz" in my short list of greatest books about effective management and leadership. And Winters is right - I didn't know it until I had it comfirmed by this book, but managing people IS indeed like operating a floor sander!

This book is exactly what every new supervisor/manager needs to help him or her navigate the first 6 months in the new role! The issues that Winters has illustrated generally don't come up in management training, but they are vital to understand. This book isn't about "skill building," it's about the unexpected isses that pop up and require some thinking. Having this book is like having a mentor who knows just what you are dealing with and provides great advice!

Deep and detailed perspectives

Simon Schama has a gift, and that is writing history as though it be a novel, or movie, or even, a report of life itself, just happening now, or yesterday; in short, to bring things to life, and put them in perspective of those times that he's writing about. In a way that you care about, or soon will, as it will grasp you. This book then offers a view into the 17th century of the Netherlands and surrounding countries, and in particular of those artists that were emerging and had emerged as the top in their art in those days, Rubens and Rembrandt, that is deep and close-up at the same time. Be prepared for a lot of details, especially about Rubens when expecting to read about Rembrandt, but as the author tries to make clear; one must be seen in the perspective of the other. This is taking the reader often way beyond the Art itself, into the lives of those that created it, and those they were connected to; what kind of persons they were, and where they drew their inspirations from, only to then take a look at the art they were producing against that backdrop, in that perspective, in order gain a better understanding of what their art was about.

More than an art history title

"Rembrandt's Eyes" contains such evocative detail and historical sweep as to suggest an excellent script for a possible movie of the Dutch Master. Simon Schama doesn't just describe a painting or a scene from 17th century Holland, he puts your senses in high gear with a cornucopia of images, insights and appreciation for Rembrandt and the world he lived in.
This book is not a volume of color plates with tersely rendered explanations. It's a dense and textured treatment of one of the pinnacles of the Rennaissance: Rembrandt van Rijn. But how, exactly, did he get to be so universally famous? Schama pieces together the artist's earliest influence - the mega-star Rubens - and the effects of the Calvinist/Catholic conflicts on Dutch society. You will never look at the strangely mournful, pensive face of Rembrandt in the same way after reading "Rembrandt's Eyes".
The book itself is excellently created, with over 700 pages of glossy paper drenched in intelligently set text. The illustrations, while too small in some cases, are well placed to support Schama's descriptions, and the book has a heft that more than justifies the price. This is a book to read with relish.

Maybe art experts will think this work shallow because it's written in plain words without losing extremely interesting explanations on paintings not only from Rembrandt but of several Dutch masters.I had already read Mr.Schama book on Netherland history and though Rembrandt's era is mentioned it comes in a way pertaining to this book.I was never a fan of Rubens but this book does even that.I wished all Rembrandt's works mentioned could be found in a single place as this is not possible Reading this book is the second best option

This book offered some additional tips like how DHEA works and impacts your body. However, if you have been researching and/or have read several other books on fertility like I have, this book really doesn't offer additional information. I think it's a great book for those who are just starting on their fertility path but for those have done their research already it doesn't offer anything new.

I am 44 years old and have had 2 miscarriages and 4 IVF cycles and no luck ...I found this book while looking at older women by age in regards to childbearing. I read the book and have a lot of hope also given the fact that Darja has had her 2nd child at age 45. I give this book a thumbs up!!

For women who are having trouble getting pregnant, honestly, this book is very informative and detailed on ways to help you help yourself. I used to ask why is it when a woman goes to her doctor, seeking help with her fertility, her chances of getting pregnant are the same as when she's trying on her own. Darja put it best, saying the doctors can only do so much --- they have lives, too. The winner here is you! You have to change your lifestyle habits to better your chances. Definitely a must-have book in my honest opinion.

Ugh...are you serious?

This book might be humorous, and in that respect the author may have promise. But it just jumps in, immediately, with graphic sex between the two main characters who, by the way, do not know each other. I am rolling my eyes...bored already.
Hmmm .plot? I suppose one will show up, eventually, but you can already guess the focus of the book.
I have said this repeatedly...graphic sex is used constantly by authors who do not have enough substance of plot to create a truly excellent story. One must assume they have no imagination or talent and must therefore drown the book in sex to draw readers.

Just Loved It!!

I received an advance copy in exchange for my honest opinion. My review will not be as eloquent as Olivia Thorne's writing. OMG I LOVED IT! Eve is independent and smart. Grant sounds hot and interesting, It was a new and different story about a billionaire. I usually like to read longer books, but when I can't put a book down until I finish it and know there is more to come I don't mind. I could not wait to read the next one, it was sooooo good. So that is what I did.

Olivia has me hooked again!!!!

I received an advance copy of the story in exchange for my honest opinion and I am so glad that I did. Olivia Thorne had me hooked on her All That He Wants series and she had me feeling so many emotions with her Rock Star’s Seduction novels, and I just started her Midnight Riders Motorcycle Club, so to say I am a fan is an understatement. Her latest The Billionaire’s Kiss, is a serial series and I for one love having something to look forward to reading every few weeks.

We are introduced to Eve, a deviously smart and strong woman, who is very used to being admired for her brains and her beauty. Then we meet Grant, her equal in many ways, although you don’t realize how similar they are until book three. He is a charmer and not lacking in confidence. Let’s just say that Grant can short circuit Eve’s brain in ways no one ever has. I don’t want to let out too many details, but this story has more than just sex (but it is panty melting), more than just cute banter (though it does make you smile), it has a mystery aspect that keeps you guessing and gets you thinking. I like the idea of a crime fighting duo and it is fun watching them try to figure out who is after them all while trying to figure each other out as well!

Could Olivia have bundled these into one book – of course, but then we wouldn’t have the anticipation of waiting for another installment that is only a few weeks away. It is so worth the wait to enjoy Eve and Grant, watch them try to get out of the trouble they find themselves in, and explore their lust (and eventually love – only time will tell!).
So for those of you that like to leave negative reviews because of the serial novel concept, know what you are getting into before starting, but I still encourage you to start since no one can weave a story quite like Olivia Thorne! I am looking forward to book 4 and getting to know these two even better!

Brian S. Duvall, OD, pursued his undergraduate studies at Central Washington University and his Doctor of Optometry from Pacific University College of Optometry, graduating with distinction. Dr. Duvall then completed fellowship training in the treatment and management of ocular disease at Omni Eye Specialist in Denver, Colo. Following his residency training, Dr. Duvall served in Tucson, Ariz as the Director of Optometric Consultative services at The Orange Grove Center for Corrective Eye Surgery. With the emergence of excimer laser technology, Dr. Duvall joined TLC Laser Eye Centers as an Executive and Clinical Director in both Indianapolis and Seattle, serving as a consultant, clinician, and educator. Dr. Duvall currently serves as director at Snoqualmie Valley Eyecare, a private group practice in the Cascade gateway, east of Seattle, Wash. Aside from his clinical and administrative duties, Dr. Duvall maintains his role as an educator and consultant within the optometric community; he lectures and publishes frequently on many aspects of medical and surgical eyecare and has served as co-host with Dr. Kershner on television's "Eye on Health." Dr. Duvall has volunteered his time and resources on eyecare mission trips, has served at many levels in his local and state organizations, and is an adjunct Professor to Pacific University College of Optometry. Dr. Duvall has received the highest accolades from faculty, students, patients, and colleagues as an accomplished educator and clinician. The role he cherishes most is that of husband to his wife Latreash and father to their 3 children.

Robert M. Kershner, MD, MS, FACS, pursued his undergraduate studies in Molecular Biology at Boston University, graduated with honors, and received the Distinguished Alumni Award in 2002. He received his Masters of Science in Cell Biology and Biochemistry and Doctor of Medicine degrees with honors at the University of Vermont College of Medicine. He completed his Internship in General Surgery and his specialty training in Ophthalmology at the University of Arizona Health Sciences Center in Tucson, and was chief resident in Ophthalmology at the University of Utah Medical Center in Salt Lake City, Utah. He is certified by the American Board of Ophthalmology, subspecialty certified in Cataract and Refractive Surgery by the American Board of Eye Surgery, a Fellow of the American Academy of Ophthalmology, a Fellow of the American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery, and a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons. Dr. Kershner is President and CEO of Eye Laser Consulting, Boston, Mass; Clinical Professor of Ophthalmology at the John A. Moran Eye Center, University of Utah School of Medicine in Salt Lake City, Utah; IK Ho Visiting Professor of Ophthalmology at the Chinese University of Hong Kong; Past Chief of the Section of Ophthalmology and nominated for Chief of Staff at Northwest Medical Center, Tucson, Ariz; Past Medical Director-Pima Medical Institute; Board Member, American College of Eye Surgeons; Past Chairman of the Anterior Segment Fellowship Program; and Founder and Director Emeritus of the Eye Laser Center in Tucson, Ariz. Dr. Kershner has authored over 200 scientific articles, contributed to 20 textbooks, and is on the editorial board of numerous scientific journals. He has been featured on radio, in print (in USA Today and Newsweek, performing surgery with the Implantable Miniature Telescope), and on television (on CNN and ABC's Evening News Tonight with Peter Jennings, as well as hosting the popular weekly cable television series "Eye on Health"). Dr. Kershner has been active in research to develop new intraocular lens implants, is a pioneer in the development of new microsurgical techniques (for cataract, refractive, and glaucoma surgery), and has developed numerous medical devices and surgical instruments that bear his name. In addition to teaching other ophthalmologists and industry representatives in the United States, Dr. Kershner has been an invited speaker in Austria, Brazil, France, Italy, Norway, India, Canada, Mexico, China, Switzerland, Thailand, Taiwan, Japan, South Africa, Holland, Australia, Czech Republic, and Russia. He has been honored for his teaching and surgical skills by the International Association for Training and Research in Ophthalmic Surgery in Stansstad, Switzerland; by the late Director General and Professor Svyatoslav N. Fyodorov of the Intersectoral Research and Technology Complex in Moscow, Russia; and by the Japanese Society for Cataract Research, the Japan Intraocular Lens Implant Society. He is the recipient of the Alcon Surgical Award for Achievement in Ophthalmology, the Achievement Award of the American Academy of Ophthalmology, the gold medal from the Indian Intraocular Implant and Refractive Society (the Maharshtra Ophthalmic Society, the Bombay Ophthalmologist's Association), and received the IK HO Visiting Professorship of Ophthalmology from the Chinese University of Hong Kong. In 1994, Dr. Kershner received the Republican Senatorial Medal of Freedom, the highest honor the Republican members of the United States Senate can bestow on a private citizen. Dr. Kershner was listed in the 2002-2003 Guide to America's Top Ophthalmologists published by the Consumers' Research Council of America in Washington, DC. He received a National Leadership Award given by Dennis Hastert, Speaker of the House, on behalf of the United States Congress in 2002. He was inducted into the Collegium of Distinguished Alumni of the College of Arts and Sciences at Boston University in May 2002. He continues his research, writing, and lecturing, and lives with his wife (who is a physician) and daughters in Boston.

THE basic book for students of eye care

A book that covers the basics of the most common ocular conditions and the simplest explanations available on the pharmacology of the usual medications. An excellent teaching guide!
