This ebook is a welcome edition of a classic text. Vyvyan examines the patterns of degeneration and regeneration in Shakespeare's works by focusing on several of his plays: degeneration in Julius Caesar, Macbeth, Hamlet and Othello; and regeneration in Measure for Measure, Winter's Tale, and The Tempest. The ethical choices faced by the hero are premised on the struggle within the battleground of the soul between the forces of Light and Darkness, between the allegorical characters of Love, on the one hand, and Temptation, on the other. The drama of the hero's struggle is profoundly relevant to the perennial issues of the human condition. Highly recommended. Those who enjoy this book should also seek out the other two books in the trilogy by Vyvyan -- as well as 'Shakespeare's Doctrine of Nature' by John F. Danby, an excellent study of the spiritual themes in Shakespeare, especially in 'King Lear', and Martin Lings' writings on Shakespeare from a perennialist perspective.

About the Author
WILLIAM EVANS, (1870-1950) a noted American Bible teacher, was born in Liverpool, England, in 1870. Following several years in various pastorates, he was appointed director of the Department of Bible at the Moody Bible Institute in Chicago, Illinois. Evans devoted his life to directing Bible conferences throughout the United States and Canada, and was the author of more than forty volumes on biblical interpretation including Great Doctrines of the Bible and How to Prepare Sermons.

YA-Froud's collection of fanciful sketches encompasses both the benevolent and the malevolent species of the tribe Faeries. The structure of the book is reversible with the jacket proclaiming "Good Faeries," matched on the flip side with the title "Bad Faeries." An introduction to each section covers Faery Blights, Faery Defects, Glamour, and Music, and offers advice to humans on protection against the meddling of the Bad Faeries. There are paragraphs on naming, classification, and a further delineation of earth, water, fire, and air Faeries. This is followed by an exposition on Faery physiognomy-their wings, eyes, ears, heads, and size. Faery communication and healing are also discussed. The illustrations are the heart of the book, whether done in black and white, sepia, or full color. They are vivid, full of vitality, and wonderfully varied. With unnumbered pages, this is primarily a sketchbook for readers to leaf through and marvel at the creative bent that depicts the countenances of: "The Buttered Toast Faery," "The Wrong Decision Faery," and the "Pot Pixie." Beautiful Artwork

This is amazing to look through. The art is stellar and the lore is captivating. While not all faeries were given proper descriptions, you could clearly tell their characteristics just by looking at them. There is some partial nudity, but nothing beyond that. The book is pretty big, so it can't actually fit in my shelf; that's a bummer.

The odd thing about the book is the way they chose to divide the Good Faeries from the Bad Faeries. Instead of seamlessly going from front to back (as usual), you actually have to flip the book around. This makes it very inconvenience for me, since my desk space is rather limited.

Gorgeous art, thin writing.

Froud's art is, as always, tremendously beautiful. There is a uniqueness to his work which makes it exceptionally poignant and unforgettable. He, along with Tony DiTerlizzi, is one of the only artists I know of that have such talent. The reason I'm only giving this four stars, though, is that I was expecting it to be more of a field guide of the Faery world. It's more a collection of Froud's art than anything else. The writing is rather light, and not very fleshed out. Some images don't have an explanation as to what they are representing, and when they do, it is often only a few lines that doesn't tell the reader much. If you're more interested in the art aspect than the lore of the Faery world, or a huge fan of Froud like myself, then buy this book!

Delightful Surprises And Gorgeous Illustrations

I love the art of Brian Froud and this book does not disappoint his fans or readers who seek to learn about the many types of fae-beings he has imagined. His voice even alternates in his writing with the voice of faeries from the realm. The book defines Good Faeries and Bad Faeries and there is a section in the middle that delights! The Good Faerie can be turned upside down to see a completely different (probably bad) faerie, and vice versa as the Bad Faeries section approaches the Good Faeries. There is some nudity among his fae-beings. The drawings and paintings are beautifully rendered and informative.

How can my interaction with a computer have anything to do with theatre? I'm typing!" Made me think about things I never would have thought about

Computers as Theatre, Second Edition is an update to a 20-year-old classic in the field of human-computer interaction. The author, Brenda Laurel, is an Adjunct Professor of Computer Science and Affiliated Faculty for Games and Playable Media at the University of California, Santa Cruz. In addition to her academic credentials, which include a PhD in theatre, she also has serious real-world experience with previous employers like Atari, Activision, and Apple.

The book is based on the simple premise that effective interface design, just like effective drama, must engage the user directly in an experience involving both thought and action. Laurel's key point is that a user's enjoyment must be a paramount design consideration, and she posits that it demands a deep awareness of dramatic theory and technique. While I might shrink back from the idea that this awareness is an absolute requirement, I will quickly and easily concede that this awareness would be extremely useful.

This is not a book of practical tips and tricks. It is a reader-accessible study that lays out the philosophical and academic foundations for understanding first how humans audience members interact with drama and uses that as a basis for thinking about how computer users can more effectively be enabled to interact with computers.

The beginning of Computers as Theatre focuses on both classical and modern schools of thought and theory about drama. This is very interesting and outside of my previous experience. It got me thinking about things I had never considered. I like that.

The rest of the book takes this knowledge and applies it to computers. It does so in ways that alternately seem obvious and revolutionary. I will illustrate using one small portion of the book's content.

In drama, the action is represented as a whole and created by the playwright and director to be the same in every performance. In human-computer interaction, the action is collaboratively shaped by both the designer and the person using the computer; it is a joint-venture and may change with each interactive session. And yet, in both instances, there is an expected beginning, middle, and end. The audience expects to move from a beginning point to an end point with a purpose. The characters in a drama exist and act to move this plot forward. So do the elements of a computer interface design.

Have you have ever sat at a computer looking at a piece of software and wondering "What's the point?" Then you have experienced a bad interface design. Learning how to create an interface that has an obvious point and reason behind each of its constituent parts and actions is one of the things this book intends to teach, but again, from a philosophical rather than practical standpoint. Here we do not learn the "what to do" answers so much as the questions to ask. In the long term, this is usually more valuable regardless of the topic or field.

Good ideas, but I felt the book lacked a clear focus.

I finished reading "Computers as Theater" by Brenda Laural yesterday. The book has many good ideas in it, and it may well be worth reading just to pick these up.
It is also one of those books which does not do a good job of unifying its material, in my opinion. Rather than being a progression of ideas that builds to some intellectual climax, it meanders through various interesting points not quite aimlessly. The book introduces two useful diagrams: 'flying wedges' which describe how the space of possibilities in a drama go from the 'possible' to converge on the 'necessary', and 'freytag triangles', which measures the rise and fall of a plot. If these are used to describe this book (a slight abuse?), it doesn't fare well. The freytag diagram never peaks, and the wedge doesn't converge to the 'necessary'. This may be because the objectives for the book were not clear. As a reader, I didn't realize she was not (mostly) speaking to the modern commercial software world for quite a while into the book. The book also ended with two chapters about virtual reality (the substance, not the hype), and I was left wondering if perhaps *this* was what the book was really about (if so, I didn't see it coming).
All that said: there are many good ideas in the book, some of which will make you stop and think for a while (e.g. those diagrams). It is valuable because of this. As an individual, I simply wish the book had been better structured, for I'd have gotten more out of it.

About the Author
Richard Overy, Professor of History, University of Exeter, U.K. (formerly Professor of Modern History, King's College, London), is an expert on the history of World War II, air warfare, and the Hitler and Stalin dictatorships. He has published over 20 books, including Carlton's landmark four-volume series The Second World War Experience, Russia's War, The Battle of Britain, and Why the Allies Won, and edited a number of others.
Dale Dye was born in Cape Girardeau, Missouri. He served in Vietnam in 1965 and 1967 through 1970, surviving 31 major combat operations. Appointed a warrant officer in 1976, he was a captain when he was sent to Beirut with the Multinational Peacekeeping Force in 1982-83. He served in a variety of assignments around the world and along the way managed to graduate with a BA degree in English from the University of Maryland. Dye founded Warriors, INC., the leading military consultancy to motion pictures and television, shortly after retiring from the Marine Corps, and his firm has worked on more than 50 movies and TV shows, including several Academy Award and Emmy winning productions. He and his firm have worked closely with the directors and actors on almost every major war film to come out of Hollywood in the last 22 years. He recently directed the 2nd unit of Alexander under Oliver Stone, and is currently using his influence on the maxi-series The Pacific, the companion piece to the acclaimed� Dreamworks/Playtone/HBO series Band of Brothers.

Read the same plot in another book

During reading this I felt that I had already read it, and in fact on deeper thought I had! I read a book published some years before this one and found the same consistancy of plot! The author learns from a third party that all is not what it seems in the universe, then she has an epiphany of sorts whilst standing by her car! It all resonated with what I had read in Cosmic Ordering Guide: Where Dreams Can Become Reality. Self-help books generally draw their precepts from three main sources: religion and spirituality or psychology. This one here seems to draw from another source!

"Cosmic Energy" is definitely a great book that lives up to its title. I say this because Anne Jirsch has written an inspiring book on increasing the positive energy in one's life. My favorite part of the book is where she discusses space clearing suggestions, and why becoming organized is helpful in harnessing the cosmic energy. Anne's insights on how to be a magnet to increased love energy is very interesting. I appreciate that she shares such helpful information such as how to increase your love vibration, attract positive people into your life, and how to discover your life's purpose and make your dreams come true. Anne is also passionate about sharing some inspiring success stories in her book. Also, she shares somes creative and insightful advice on manifesting wealth and abundance. This is a great book to have if you have an interest in cosmic energy, increasing positive energy, and increasing your overall vibration.
