Susan is a professional speaker, consultant and author of the book Entrepreneurs Inside. Excellent insight into the world of the Corporate Entrepreneur

The author comes from a long heritage of corporate entrepreneurship (i.e., those people who start and grow very successful businesses from *within* companies rather than from scratch). Over the past several years she has been able to help deepen our understanding of who these critical people are, how they're wired together, and most importantly how can such people effectively "spread their wings" in much larger organizations in ways that propels to whole enterprise forward.

In the end, these are the people that you may not necessarily want managing a highly mature, steady-state business (and I thought that at one time about the now bankrupt Hostess Corporation!), but they are equally critical for the future of the whole enterprise. Ms. Foley provides both a framework and an highly effective assessment tool called the "Corporate Entrepreneurial Profile", which is very helpful in enabling the reader to determine where they fit in all this. This reviewer speaks from experience, having taken the survey in the past and found it an important guidepost to help navigate through his own corporate entrepreneurial journeys.

As an Internal entrepreneur, I found Acceleration to be very insightful and to the point in what it takes to build and grow within an organization. The Vision and Mission need to be clear and consistent. Susan is spot on in her approach and direction in building an environment that fosters creativity and allows for incubation groups to spawn new growth opportunities. Even when we have divisions that are growing, we open doors to individuals that want to and have the ability to step aside from the status quo and try new lines of business, new markets, new opportunities. As part of a larger operation, without attempts at new opportunities and developing staff to take on those roles, we would not be the company we are today.

The book by Canizares delineates insects with high definition and colors. The title of the book is complemented with every page in the book by the quality and action of the pictures. It is authentic, sticks to the theme and will appeal to the curiosity of children. The type of print is perfect and the words are well chosen. The detailed pictures helps tell the story while shaking the young reader's imagination. The insects are captured in frame-like borders and the quality of the paper fits the purpose of the book. There is a real meaning given to the book by its rhythmetic and moving insect characters. As a science book for young children everything is present.

Professional gamblers are very aware of the power of winning streaks and losing streaks-- and that elusive attribute that differentiates the two: confidence. Individuals, sports teams, companies, and entire nations create moods so contagious they create self-fulfilling patterns that can persist for decades. When Kanter spoke to leaders of streak-prone organizations, it was consistently the winners that wanted to share their experiences. (It seems no one wants to be slapped with the "loser" label.) But the Chicago Cubs consistently came up as the example of the organization with the most infamous losing streak, and although the players deny that the brand influences them, the constant reminder from media and fans keeps the jinx alive. She also looks at the factors necessary to create a turnaround, where strong leadership is essential, as recently exemplified at Gillette and the Philadelphia Eagles. It's been said that "confidence builds nations" and although this is primarily an examination of self-reinforcing cycles, Kanter shows how we as individuals and groups ultimately have a measure of control over our responses to circumstance. "patience" --needed to read this book from begin to end

I had great expectations of this book as it started out OK. But soon (within a couple chapters) I realized that the author had run out of new things to say. While there are some non-fiction authors that can captivate and entertain an audience with a single concept (ie... Gladwell w/"Tipping Point/Blink"), this author's writing style seems unusually laborious and repetitive -- languishing in incomprehensible detail. Sad to say, but I think I would have been better off just reading a synopsis of this book.

This book is boring, tedious, and thoroughly uninspiring

I can't believe the average customer review is greater than 4 stars! This book was a chore to read; I will admit that I could not drag myself throught he entire text. And I mean "text". This book was written like a textbook. I felt I back in college slogging through my required reading. This book was written as if someone did a whole bunch of research (using many different grad students of course), then tried to compile all the data into a book. The problem is, anybody can do that, but few can do that well. The writer loses the reader in all those details, forgeting to stick to the basics, highlight them with interesting examples, and repeat them often. I know she probably thinks she did this, and she did, just not well. I've never seen such an interesting topic made so boring.

OK as an overview of negotiation, very little practical value for purchasing professionals

I had high hopes of this (expensive) paperback, since there are very few (if any) contemporary books dedicated to negotiation from the buyers' perspective. Alas, this book disappointed me on many (all) fronts.

1. This book provides an OK review of negotiation, but very bland and far from comprehensive or cohesive. It is a messy hodge-podge of topics and issues. While the Red Sheet methodology and its 4 sections (S.T.E.P.) provide some unifying framework, the book would certainly benefit from a critical editor and his/her Red Ink methodology!

However, there are very few practical and specific issues that directly relate to purchasing and procurement functions. Therefore the title is misleading. Seasoned professionals such as myself will find nothing of interest here, while young purchasing professionals will be overwhelmed by 350 or so pages and a myriad of steps and "models".

2. There are 6 framed practical examples in boxes (presumable important). Of those only half are purchasing examples (pages 206, 298 and 304), the other three have nothing to do with purchasing (pages 159, 162, 165)

3. Important topics of interest to most purchasing professionals, such as negotiating simultaneously with multiple suppliers or local agents, sole-source and single-source negotiations are not covered at all (at least I could not find them in the book).

4. The style is dry and uninspiring. It reads like a textbook, academic style is used, such as 'Karrass (1996) states "in life you don get what you deserve, ..."')as if Karrass' book is a seminal work! I had to force myself to keep reading.

5. The structure of the book (and by that I mean the order of the chapters) is weird and methodologically unsound. Things just don't follow a they should and there is no flow between chapters. For instance, "Defining outcomes", in other words deciding what you want and setting your negotiating goals (one of the first things you need to do in every negotiation) is the title of Chapter 9. The preceding is chapter 8, titled "Game theory in negotiation". "Negotiating across cultures" is chapter 5, followed by the chapter called "Power".

6. There is a plethora of doubtful "models", all given strange acronyms, some that mean nothing (RACI, RAQSCI), others that are easy to remember (SOAP, ACE, STEP, COW) but there is so many of them that it starts getting blurred after a while.

In conclusion, I wasted $50 or so, should be able to claim it on tax as a legitimate business expense, although it is anything but.

Practical with surprising humor, Provides an interesting perspective on a familiar topic

Negotiation for Purchasing Professionals is the second book by Jonathan O’Brien that we have reviewed. Earlier this year we reviewed Category Management in Purchasing. While each of the books has a different focus, they have more in common than just an intended audience. The most striking similarity is a clear desire to improve the knowledge and capabilities of purchasing professionals by capturing O’Brien’s considerable experience and communicating it in a straightforward manner.

While some of O’Brien’s recommendations will be familiar to anyone who has read other titles on negotiation, he manages to include surprising bits of good humor throughout, including advice on preparing to buy a nuclear submarine, and how to handle it when you are trying to get a tribal mask onto an airline (after having happily overpaid for it).

There is a wise emphasis on preparation, self-awareness, and the reality of a situation versus collaborative altruism. In other words, sometimes a win-win negotiation is not required – just slice the proverbial ‘pie’ and move on. Even in win-win negotiations, sometimes a win is not so great as a WIN.

In the preface, the author states: “This is a practical book for anyone who buys and wants to negotiate more effectively with suppliers.” (xiv) The idea of striving for an ‘effective’ negotiation is a good reminder that as nerve racking as they can be, they are necessary for the management of supply.

For all the opportunities anyone can have to improve their negotiation skills, the best may be experiencing what an effective negotiation looks and feels like. This point speaks to O’Brien’s differentiation between negotiation skills and negotiation knowledge. Personality has an undeniable role in negotiation, as it determines how we are likely to approach a situation. The same is not true of identity, which can be assumed easier than personality can be changed. An identity is more closely linked to our behavior. As we may find ourselves called to play a deliberate role in a negotiation, we can assume a ‘negotionality’, or way of acting specific to a negotiation. (103)

I particularly appreciated the sales perspective O’Brien included in the book, as the focus of chapter 2 and then running as a current throughout. The chapter on body language, complete with pictures, provides wonderful illustrations as to how purchasing professionals can read and use unspoken cues in a negotiation.

The other considerable asset of the book are the Red Sheet ® negotiation templates (available in the book and for download from Positive Purchasing). This framework and methodology can be used to support professionals through the entire negotiation process.

I have become a heavy user of Tableau over the last 12 months and find the resources available in print and online to be very weak. Tableau doesn't do a great job of providing no-nonsense, to-the-point, resources. This book is not going to bring you to a level of detail you might need for a deep dive. This is a macro view of the main tasks for completing a basic Tableau visual, map, dashboard, etc.

Recommended for beginners - experienced Tableau users may learn a few new tricks with this book

I would highly recommended this for beginning Tableau users. Mr. Peck's book does a great job of covering all of the basics and even goes beyond the basics to include some tips and tricks that even advanced Tableau users will find useful. Tableau Jedi users may find this book to be a little light on new information. I was able to make it through the book in an hour but I did learn a few new things - mostly shortcuts I did not know about. Since there are no Tableau Jedi level books out on the market your best bets for advanced learning are the many great blogs written by Tableau gurus and Zen Masters..and of course the annual Tableau Customer Conference (TCC) where the best consultants and developers from Tableau Software present on things you had no idea Tableau was capable of.

Perfect Book for Tableau lovers

I started reading this book the first thing you will notice is quality of book & content

The CD which you will get with this book ... have 9 classes which gives you overview of all the basic features that are important for tableau beginners !

Price wise it is more Kindle/paperback is same (only 4 !)
