Although a political science textbook may often seem dry and boring, this text is actually somewhat engaging for the collegiate reader. Poses, Illuminates, and Appraises Crucial Issues with Piagetian Theory in Much-welcomed Detail and Depth

This is a thoughtful and highly illuminating book that addresses crucial issues with respect to Piagetian theory, including ones that in my limited familiarity with Piagetian literature have nonetheless been a source of continuing concern to me. Moreover, this book poses and explores many other issues that are comparably problematic or ambiguous. The author is nevertheless generally supportive of Piaget's ideas, but not slavishly so. For example, his support at times involves rectifying, supplementing, or questioning Piaget's own accounts, thereby rendering the subject theory/topic more specific or coherent, if sometimes inherently incomplete in certain aspects.

Composed from a philosophical viewpoint, this book still relates well to Piaget's cognitive development theories, theses, and concepts. It explores the major topics in Piaget's epistemological repertoire, and does so in a cogent and penetrating manner. Moreover, I found the flow of discourse and the style of writing to be quite good. Before anyone's launching into this book, however, it would be prudent for them to possess at least a modicum of familiarity with Piaget's ideas on genetic epistemology as well as its supporting elements and terminology in genetic psychology. At my level of conversance with Piaget's ideas then, coupled with a variety of novel topics or arguments that were introduced, this book was not for me a uniformly easy read throughout. It was nevertheless a generally stimulating and rewarding read.

One of the author's more impactful and incisive messages was elucidating the assertion: Piaget was NOT a psychologist per se, but instead a genetic epistemologist. Psychology is concerned with unique, subjective, egocentric subjects, together with differences among them, as influenced by their respective contingencies. In contrast, Piaget was concerned with an abstract, ideal, decentered subject postulated to be present as a common universal rationality within every human individual, or a postulated epistemic subject. Piaget then undertook to determine the general course of the cognitive development of this epistemic subject. To implement this research agenda, he developed a rather specialized genetic psychology (genetic connoting genesis of knowledge), which has been rather widely characterized as Piagetian child development psychology. But his imaginative research with children was in fact an empirical means to the theoretical end of elaborating and establishing his genetic epistemology, or the constructive development of knowledge.

Most interesting to me was the treatment of reflective abstraction (especially pp. 61-65). Kitchener's coverage, moreover, is the most thorough, clear, and incisive treatment of this topic that I have found. His contribution is most valuable because this complex process is pivotal in Piaget's concept of constructive development. Specifically, reflective abstraction produces increasingly more complex and refined cognitive structures, and in turn, it enables ever greater knowledge acquisition and consolidation. However, I believe the coverage here could have been improved by the addition of two figures: Piaget's Spiral of Knowing for context and overall process organization; and a two-level diagram depicting the respective elements and relationships of the two hierarchical levels of cognitive development here, or relatively, the planes of action and understanding (p. 63). Thankfully for me, Kitchener's treatment of this topic is not too burdened by accounts of antecedent clinical investigations and Piaget's detailed construals thereof - mainly just the resulting theory and its assessment. After all, this book centers on Piaget's ultimate research goal of genetic epistemology: the genesis and growth of knowledge in the epistemic subject.

As the title suggests, Piaget's relationships between genetic epistemology and his views on the history/philosophy of science are also addressed. This linkage is based on his thesis that the same cognitive faculties and constructs are employed in the advancement of science as are utilized in the development of the epistemic subject. Also, the correspondence between Piaget's philosophy of science and that of contemporary philosophers like Lakatos and Popper is identified and critiqued.

Overall, the organization of the book is somewhat unusual in that certain topics, like reflective abstraction for example, are treated in several parts of the book. The separate parts embody differing contexts, aspects, or perspectives, but there is nonetheless some sense of repetition of topics. As a non-specialist, however, I did not consider any attendant redundancy to be objectionable.

In sum, this is one of two books on Piaget's work that I have found to be the most scholarly, penetrating, and hence valuable in my reading thus far. Written from a philosopher's perspective, this book complements the other title quite nicely (Chapman's "Constructive Evolution"). The latter book provides a more encompassing yet comparably illuminating examination of Piaget's work per se. Read the latter book first for background for the subject book. The concluding chapter of Chapman's book, moreover, is effectively a different perspective and compressed treatment of the overall subject of Kitchener's book.

A REMARKABLE BIOGRAPHY OF GERTRUDE BELL

This is the third biography that I've read on this remarkable woman and by far the best. Winstone(who died in 2010) takes the reader through every aspect of Bell's life(1868-1926) focusing on her privileged upbringing as the daughter of Sir Hugh Bell, through her years at Oxford, mountain climbing in Switzerland, her travels to the Middle East(Syria, Palestine & Arabia), her work both during and after World War One, and finally her work on the formation of modern day Iraq(called Mesopotamia by the British) and the establishment of the Iraqi National Archaeology Museum. Winstone leaves no stone unturned in going over Bell's life. It's all here from her unconsummated love affair with the married Charles Doughty-Wylie whose death at Gallipoli(in 1915) affected her the rest of her life, to her dealing with two men who were her contemporaries(Winston Churchill & T.E. Lawrence) who received far more attention and acclaim than she did in her lifetime. And there are the little things too, such as her terrible handwriting and her passion for Egyptian cigarettes(which probably contributed to her early death at age 57). During her lifetime Bell was a writer, photographer, political administrator, traveler and shaper of nations. Despite all these titles, she considered herself an archaeologist first and her work in this field is still being studied today nearly a hundred years later. One thing that Winstone mentions in his biography is that Bell did not like being photographed herself so there are very few photos of her. The great English painter Edward Poynter painted a portrait of Bell when she was eight years old(in 1876) that shows her standing beside her father. With her long red hair and beautiful features, the look in her eyes tells anyone looking upon the portrait that she was destined for greatness. It's a shame that she is mostly forgotten by history considering how much she contributed to the making of that history. Her life has been overshadowed by T.E. Lawrence(of Arabia fame) but it's impact on history cannot be understated. Along with the other two recent biographies of Bell by Janet Wallach and Georgina Howell, hopefully this remarkable woman's life will be rediscovered. It would make a great mini-series. In the meantime, H.V.F. Winstone's biography is a must read for anyone interested in the Middle East and one of the most remarkable women who was a major player in shaping that region.

Will the real GB please stand up...

Winstone reveals himself in this updated edition as an astute student of history with insight into historical personalities. This is a no-nonsense, unworshipful biography by a very interested, yet disinterested, author; accordingly, the presented life of GB is that of a person, a remarkable and accomplished woman, but neither idol nor heroine. An informative book that provides a sound understanding of the much-mythologized GB, and of the events and times of her life. Unfortunately, a matter-of-fact book is seldom highly engrossing. Nits: the index is erratic (one of my pet peeves!), and in the back-of-book time-comprehensive chronology the Byzantine emperor-warrior Heraclius is misnamed "Heraclitus" (famous philosopher of Ephesus).

Queen of the Desert

I first learned about Bell while studying archaeology and knew only of her involvement with the founding of the Iraq museum . However, I was unaware of the extent of her involvement in the politics of the region. This book is a timely and recommended read for anyone interested in the current situation in Iraq and the Middle East. It provides an well-written and fascinating look at the personalities and forces that shaped the region-Bell being one-and provides insight into the background of the conflicts there. It also is a brilliant portrait of Bell herself and the world of a daughter of privelege in the last days of the British Empire.

Although the first edition copy is somewhat dated, the basic morphological descriptions are still very useful. This is a good introductory mycology book, as long as you promptly read another, more up-to-date version right after reading this one.

This book is a very good overview of the kingdom Fungi. With an easy vocabulary usage, the authors were able to entertain the reader with very well done chapters. Although some of the topics could have been streesed a little deeper, the book is perfect for college students enrolled in classes such as introductory mycoloy and fungal systematics.

A Must Read For Serious Readers

My overall 2nd favorite book and -by far -favorite science fiction story. This book and the entire original 6-novel story taught me more about politics, ecology, psychology and the human condition than all of my schooling combined. A must read for anyone that seeks insight into why we do the things we do and how to really read others and sharply tune-in to what's going on around you, but it'll take concentrated reading and possibly a re-read or two for it to truly sink in. Admittedly, it is a typical sci-fi epic as far as "boy struggles, boy overcomes, boy rules" -but you have to take in mind the time of its writing: the late sixties. Besides, there are so many other strong characters that I find myself identifying with a new one on each re-read -and the plot twists and possible future for mankind can be mind-bending for new readers. I recommend this book for any and all book lovers, whether it's mystery, romance, science, technology, psychology, ecology, social, politics, hero or epic fantasy as your favorite genre, this novel touches on it all. Pity they've never been able to make a series of movies to give it justice.

Each time I read Dune I become richer

I'm not actually sure how many times I've read Dune; every decade maybe. It is extraordinary how each time I do it speaks of something different to me as I age. My first read as a young teen in the '70s was overwhelming with words and scenes I'd never experienced before. It was magical and one of the mind expanding elements of the New Age. Now, in 2017, it comes full circle to the fears of environmental impact and government off the beam. I've aged, and the story still offers an amazingly lucid reflection of reality. I highly recommend it across anyone's life span.

This book has been reviewed more than 1,667 times on Amazon, 1998 of those are five star ratings. So you know it's a great book, but why it's great may escape you from the reviews I read. I bought the book having heard it's a classic, but knowing absolutely nothing about it, and the reviews I read didn't make me more inclined to read it. The author is obviously a genius, I mean a calculus and physics kind of genius, who figured out what the magnetic draw of a charismatic president could do to a country more than 60 years ago. He dropped hundreds of spectacular gems you probably never even considered before. Things that could change the way you think about life. In addition, the story moves along more rapidly than most, and moves from step to step in a deeply coherent manner that was being set up for chapters but escaped your notice until it unfolded. Sometimes I was startled by the rapidness. All 900 pages of it. The other end of the universe from Stephenson or Mieville. This is the story of a 15 year old who suffered defeat and hid in the desert until he became the ultimate ruler and foundation of a new religion. Great plot, great characterization, great pace. Very little about the military stuff, a great deal about the other stuff. Great everything. Perhaps my favorite book. A fabulous read that will stick with you long after you put the book down.

An amazing insight into a complex and emotional subject.

Reading this book has been a very thought-provoking experience for me, on many levels. I have read many books on miscarriage and other forms of pregnancy loss, but none has attempted the links that this book has.
The author looks at the way in which pregnancy loss is seen by Western societies and explores the resulting effects on women who lose babies in different circumstances. There is much balance and sensitivity in this book, which is a tremendous achievement for the author.
What I found particularly illuminating was the way in which case studies are used to look at how losing a baby can echo previous experiences, particularly in childhood. Whilst readers are unlikely to be carbon copies of the people described in the case studies, there are many subtle threads within them to make you just stop and think, and begin the fascinating process of making connections between your own experiences.
I wrote down some key quotes from it in my journal, so that I could reflect on them and see if applying them to my own experience of pregnancy loss and childhood would reveal any new interpretations for me. There are not many books which achieve that level of insight!
The reference section at the back includes Internet web sites, which reflects how up to date it is.
All in all, a terrific book which the author should be very proud of writing.

A MUST READ IF YOU HAVE LOST A PREGNANCY!

After loosing my first baby to miscarriage I went searching for answers to my feelings and emotions. At times I felt (and still do) like I was going totally crazy and my feelings were unjustified or an overreaction.
Kim Kluger-Bell made me understand and realise that my feelings are normal and felt by many other women out there. The way she described many of the feelings and thoughts about other people could have very well be written about myself. I could really relate to what she was saying and she has made me understand that nothing is wrong with me - the problem is with society!

Best book on the topic

I read this book when it first came out several years ago and I still think it is the best book available on the topic of pregnancy loss because it is so intelligently written and profoundly moving. Its not just a book about loss, its a book about life! I have recently read a couple of negative reviews of this book--which seem to be based solely on the fact that the author includes abortion in several short sections of the book. I was shocked and dismayed to see that someone called the book "insensitive" for including abortion--clearly that reviewer is a very angry person! I hope that no one will be discouraged from reading this book because of that, because the compassion the author brings to both the topics of miscarriage, still birth and abortion is very healing for all.

Somethings are GREAT -- others, not so much...

As an college educator in computer science, I am always on the lookout for new programming textbooks that might be helpful for beginning students. Often times, books that are "designed for kids" tend to be awesome for adults as well.

Here's what I like about this book:
- Designed for first-time beginners who know absolutely nothing about programming!
- Teaches the fundamental basics of Python that are needed to create various, fun projects.
- Beautifully illustrated with visual examples. The book just makes you "want" to learn how to program, especially the first chapters!
- Focuses more upon GUI programming, such as how to work with Turtle Graphics, Tkinter, PyGame, etc.

What needs improved:
- Teaches Python 2 (instead of 3 -- the current version).
- Requires users to install PyGame (a game development feature), which works well for Windows-based PCs, but not so much for Mac users.
- Some chapters focus so strongly on making the experience "fun" that the author tends to gloss over important programming concepts without giving them the attention that's needed to ensure the reader adequately grasps them.

Overall, it's a fun book that's helpful to beginners. Yet, there are aspects that should of been improved in order to make it awesome.

Excellent way to learn Python for youngsters – and adults.

The publisher says this a book is intended to help 11 to 15 year olds who want to learn how to program in Python on their own. This is true. Author Craig Richardson does an exemplary job of making programming in Python – and I am not being loose with my words – easy to learn. Not only for kids, but for adults as well. I would instantly recommend this book as an introduction to programming for people with no prior experience in the art.

I like Richardson’s approach. He has created 10 “adventures” to guide the learner through their mastery of basic programming concept and the Python language. (By the way, Richardson specifically prohibits the use of Python 3: for this book, only Python v2.7.8 or later will work.)

The “adventures” are oriented toward simple games which probably has the greatest chance of keeping younger minds involved and won’t bore adults either. All the code is very clearly laid out and is also downloadable. Videos are also available for some topics. (I haven’t worked every code example, so I can’t comment on bugs, if any.) Lots of illustrations as well.

One thing Richardson does that most Python teachers don’t is introduce Tkinter, the module used for creating Graphic User Interfaces (GUI) very early in the game. Many Python instructional don’t mention Tkinter, assuming their readers will use only Command Line driven programs. I think Richardson’s approach, especially for younger learners, is much better and will help keep reader interest.

This is a fun book. It makes learning Python easy and entertaining.

True, Adventures In Python covers mostly basic stuff, much of which will not be terribly useful in the real world. But this book will definitely help the motivated reader become comfortable with bossing the computer around through coding and does provide an understanding of Python.

And, as I said, adults new to programming would find this book useful as well.

FUN/Instructional Guide to Python Programming for Adolescents and Adults. Cross Platform Windows/MAC/Linux/Raspberry Python 2.6+

This instructional and FUN introduction to Python programming aimed at adolescents but appropriate to anyone with minimal programming background has much to recommend it. It has FUN graduated examples beginning with Installation, Hello World-type programs and Turtle Graphics, using graphics for games with the TKinter graphical extrensions, Pygame ending with highly interactive graphical games.
The book is divided into 10 increasingly advanced projects all of which are fun and cross-platform.

The author has taken special care that all of the examples are cross platform. Installation instructions are included for Windows 7 & 8, MAC OS X,
Linux and Raspberry Pi. The author has chosen to use the Python 2.6+ rather than a version of the 3.0+ stream. I believe the reason for this is the wider availability of programming environments and Libraries--indeed most scientific applications of Python default to 2.6+ as certain scientific libraries are not available yet in a 3.0+ release.
