About the Author

John T. Whitehead is a Professor and former Chair in the Department of Criminal Justice and Criminology at East Tennessee State University. He completed his M.A. at the University of Notre Dame and earned his Ph.D. in Criminal Justice from SUNY-Albany. He teaches courses in corrections, criminal justice ethics, and the death penalty.

Steven P. Lab is Professor of Criminal Justice and Chair of the Department of Human Services. He holds a Ph.D. in Criminology from the Florida State University School of Criminology and Criminal Justice. Dr. Lab is the author or coauthor of five books, the editor/coeditor of two readers, and coeditor of one encyclopedia. He is the author of more than 50 articles or book chapters and has presented more than 70 papers to academic or professional societies. He is a past editor of the Journal of Crime and Justice and has been an assistant editor or on the editorial boards of several additional journals. Dr. Lab has been a visiting professor at the Jill Dando Institute of Crime Science of the University College London and at Keele University in Staffordshire, England, as well as a Visiting Fellow at Loughborough University (England) and a Research Consultant with the Perpetuity Research Group at Leicester University (England). Dr. Lab has received grant funding for several large research projects from the National Institute of Justice, and has served as a consultant to the Ohio Attorney General’s Office, the Arizona Governor’s Office, and various offices of the U.S. Department of Justice. Dr. Lab is also a past-president of the Academy of Criminal Justice Sciences.

About the Author
Shirley Cohen, PhD, a professor in the Department of Special Education at Hunter College of the City University of New York for many years, became Professor Emeritus in 2011. In her role at Hunter College, Dr. Cohen co-developed the ASD Nest program for the New York City public schools with Dorothy Siegel of New York University, and continues to serve as a consultant and intervention developer for the program. She is the author of the book Targeting Autism, originally published in 1998 and since 2006 in its third edition, as well as two earlier books on disability: Special People (1977) and Respite Care (1985). She is also a coauthor of Everyday Classroom Strategies and Practices for Supporting Children With Autism Spectrum Disorders (AAPC Publishing).

Lauren Hough, MsEd, is the coaching consultant for the ASD Nest Support Project at New York University s Steinhardt School of Culture, Education, and Human Development. In this role, she provides professional development workshops, school-based consultation, and seminars on meeting the needs of school-aged students on the spectrum in inclusion settings. Prior to working as a consultant, Ms. Hough worked for five years as a special education teacher and school-based coach in the ASD Nest program. Unbelievable Program

My 6 year old has been in the ASD Nest program in Queens NY and it is amazing! The teachers and therapists do a wonderful job of understanding my daughters needs while challenging her high IQ. The Nest model has made my child excel and feel good about school and about trying to develop friends. The co teaching classroom of few high functioning ASD children along with typical children gives her the best of both worlds. The support of the program is a God send and is a program that should be in all schools in all states. The Board of Ed was right on point allowing this program in their NYC schools. God bless the creators and founders of such a game changing program for our high functioning and asperger children!!

My autistic son is in a Nest school. The program is phenomenal. Best choice for a child on the spectrum who can keep us with a general academic curriculum. He meets or exceeds expectations. The support from the administration, teachers, and his classmates has encouraged him to thrive and become a social butterfly.

This method results in the general analytical model for both steady-state (DC) as well as dynamic (AC) properties for not only the existing switching converters but for all DC-DC converters based on PWM control which were known at the time and those which have been invented at any time thereafter. The Cuk converter has also motivated formulation of a new general magnetic circuits methods named Coupled-Inductors and Integrated Magnetics and demonstrated their implementation in the non-isolated and isolated Cuk converters.

This four-volume series is an updated version of the three-volume series by Dr. Slobodan Cuk, published originally by TESLAco in 1983 as a second hardcover edition with Volume 1 and Volume 2 printed in one hardcover and volume 3 in a second hardcover. The first paperback edition published in 1981 consisted of first two volumes only. This third edition now has an additional fourth volume.�The objective of this updated and new 2015 series is to provide a fundamental introduction to this complex field to novice engineers as well as to serve as reference books to experienced practicing Power Electronics specialists.�Technical papers in this series have a twofold objective: advance the field with new research results and educate the Power Electronics community at large. This material is now also crucial for the understanding of the new switching methods: Hybrid Switching Method and Storageless Switching Method and a number of related new converter topologies and the magnetics and control improvements that have been introduced in last several years.�This four-volume set provides the four pillars on which the current Power Electronics system design relies. The first volume is:
Volume 1. Power Electronics: Topologies, Magnetics, and Control

• Provides a comprehensive view of Power Electronics and introduces novice engineers to the three key areas of expertise: Topologies, Magnetics, and Control.
• Describes buck, boost, and flyback dc-dc converters, forward and bridge converters.
• Presents properties of ferromagnetic materials leading to modeling and design of transformers and inductors.
• Provides general method of PWM control and regulation.
• Introduces the fourth basic non-isolated converter type, the Cuk converter. Unlike the buck, the boost, and the flyback converters, this converter introduces for the first time capacitive energy transfer to formulate the most general State-Space Averaging Method, using the missing state-space equations for capacitor currents and respective charge balance in addition to state-space equations for inductor currents and corresponding original volt-second balance on inductors. The Cuk converter also motivated formulation of new general magnetic circuits methods, Coupled-Inductors and Integrated Magnetics, and demonstrated their implementation in the non-isolated and isolated converters.

Great info, but needs to re-typeset.

Great information for a practicing engineer in the power conversion field, however the quality of the publications is poor.
The book seems to be a scanned in copy of old lecture notes, mimeograph, etc. As so, the text is hard to read. This is quality information worth being re-typeset.

Excellent reference book on the methods herbs and nutrients work in the body

I have been looking for a book like this for years. It not only discusses the methods by which herbs or supplements and drugs interact, it comprehensively discusses the way that supplements perform in the body. The 932 page, double columned book deals primarily with supplements (there are only 30 herbs), with detailed discussion of the substance including pharmacokinetics, pharmacogenomics and pharmacogenetics, interactions between them and how to manage the interactions.

For instance, the Vitamin K section is 10 pages long, packed with information on the nutrient (chemistry and forms, physiology and function,) the nutrient in clinical function (possible uses, deficiency symptoms including a discussion of the functional sources of reference intakes and controversies thereof, nutrient preparations available, dosage forms available, dosage ranges for various classes of patients, lab values), safety profile (adverse effects, specific populations at risk including pregnancy and nursing, infants and children, contraindications), an interactions review (Strategic considerations which provides excellent information on not only coagulation but also fibrinolysis and the use of probiotic therapy in its administration, and anti-coagulent overdose). The Nutrient-drug interactions section is over 8 pages long, discussing antibiotics and systemic antimicrobial agents by name with interaction types and significance, effect and mechanism of action, research, reports, nutritional therapeutics, clinical concerns and adaptations. And then repeats this information for bile acid sequestrants, corticosteroids, mineral oil, anticonvulsants and blood thinners. The section on theoretical, speculative, and preliminary interaction research (including overstated interactions) is separated from known issues, which is especially useful. There is also a nutrient-nutrient interaction table. And each chapter starts with a summary chart to make navigation easier.

The section on St. John's Wort is especially detailed, as it is one of author Jonathan Treasure's specialties and is perhaps the herb best known for interactions due to its influence on liver detoxification pathways. While only a limited number of herbs are considered, they are the most important in terms of potential interactions. And most importantly, the authors understand the difference between herbs and isolated constituents that may come from the herbs.

The authors' clinical expertise is especially useful as it pertains to managing the interplay between drugs and supplements. In fact some interactions can be positive, as the reshi article makes clear, by making medications more effective.

As a reference book goes, it is quite readable and the CD Rom included makes it searchable. (I was so fascinated by the zinc article that I immediately sent it to my non-medical son.) I highly recommend this book to any medical professional who is dealing with patients who take supplements, herbs or drugs (and that covers close to all of them.)

I like it a lot. I find that it can be great for a couple more years but as the pharmaceutical industry keeps introducing new formulas and discontinuing products, the book will need updates. Great resource for CAM and Herbalism students.

The Best Resource for Herb, Drug Interactions

As an Acupuncturist and Chinese Herbalist who has worked in a Western Medical Clinic for the past nine years I find this book invaluable. Most patients that I see with complex medical concerns are on Pharmaceutical drugs and they and their Doctors need to know what herbs will and won't do. This book clearly explains herb, drug interaction, from the simple to the complex. It also exhaustively references every detail for those who are sticklers for the facts, myself included. It goes much further in scope and detail than the PDR Herb, drug reference which I have used in the past.
