From School Library Journal
K-Gr 2—Sam is bewildered when he discovers that his jelly doughnut has been sucked dry. Exasperated and determined to solve the mystery, he sets a trap. Using a hamper and a ketchup-filled doughnut, Sam waits. It doesn't take very long to capture the two, small culprits. The prisoners turn out to be "jampires," magical creatures who subsist on jam. The jampires apologize for their thievery, explaining that they are far from home and got hungry. After befriending Sam, they fly him to their homeland. The land of jampires is full of dessert: an enormous jar of jam, mountains of blueberry pie, sherbet snow, ice cream moon, and sponge cake castles. Finally home, the jampires are reunited with their mothers, who are grateful to Sam. They express their thanks via daily baskets of jam-filled doughnuts. The jampires no longer take Sam's jam, but readers should beware. The detailed cartoon illustrations are rendered with pencil and watercolor in a muted palette across full-bleed spreads. Much of the conversation appears in traditional cartoon word bubbles. VERDICT A good choice for the playful storytime.—Laura Hunter, Mount Laurel Library, NJ

Review
Praise for Jampires:

"With rounded shapes, soft colors and pops of jam-bright red, O'Connell's art works delightfully with McIntyre's supple rhymes to spread a silly, sweetly escapist mood." --The New York Times/Sunday Book Review

"A satisfying concept, friendly, Sendak-inspired colored-pencil-and-pastel illustrations, cartoonish attractiveness, and plain old wackiness make this sweet story a winner." --Kirkus Reviews

"Galloping verse and cartoons dusted with humor and magic add up to a light, dessert-themed mystery that's both silly and sweet." --Publishers Weekly

Sam finds himself in jammy situation, when he bites into a dried-out jam doughnut
By Sussman
This is a book where the narrative gives the reader a `sweet tooth' laden fun and unpredictability - but very much a child friendly tale.

When Sam bites into a dry doughnut, the quick-witted jam aficionado sets up a cunning plan to entrap the robbers who seemed to have sucked his jam doughnuts dry. He soon finds two culprits who are infant `Jampires', these unusual creatures introduce him, via somewhat mystic trip, to Jampire Land. This is where his adventures really begin. Sarah McIntyre comes to fore with her brilliantly imaged illustrations that entertain and gel so very well with the narrative - if anything the combination is very much a `force-multiplier that makes the story appeal both to the child and the parent. This is a book that is jam packed with goodness - pun intended, sorry just could not help it.

3 year-old Loves Jampires
By SweetPea
This is more an observation since I bought this book for my daughter. She finds this to be one of the funniest books around! She squeals with laughter with each turn of the page! We usually read books at bedtime, but she thinks the vampires are so funny that this one might only be allowed reading during the day!

SUPERB! Skilled rhyming, great story, appealing and original illustrations.
By D. Jennings
I'd give this book six stars if I could! Summary of the plot is above so I won't repeat it. Now that the winter weather has arrived, we've been spending lots of time reading, and I'm disappointed to say that many recent picture books try for rhyming text and fail awfully.....but here, here is a book which has not only a clever and original story, and superb illustrations, but REALLY GOOD RHYMES. Meter! Rhyme scheme! Absolutely flawless, bouncy rhythm! Check it out:

"There's no jam," yelled Sam, "this doughnut's all wrinkly
This doughnut is jamless and dry

Someone got to the doughnut before me
And sucked out the jamminess. Why?"

(later)

So Sam set a trap before going to bed
And used his dry doughnut for bait

Instead of the jam, he used ketchup instead
And hid under the covers to wait.

The four-year-old reading this with me loved the story (and brought it up later when we were in Dunkin Donuts)...but equally important, I think--- this is one that I enjoy reading to her. Kids can tell if the adult reader is enthusiastic, or if it's more like "oh, all right, ONCE more and then I'm fed up with this one..." I'm happy to read this one over and over. High marks for both the writing and the illustrations. I'm going to look for more books by this author.

Useful? Yes! Good? Heck, no.
By E. R. Bird
Is there anything worse than a review or a blurb that describes a product as *blank* meets *blank*? How simplistic! How callous! That said, the first words that popped into my head after reading the first book in the ever-popular series "The Secrets of Droon" was Harry Potter meets The Magic Tree House. Which probably was exactly what author Tony Abbott was going for. This early chapter book (originally published in 1999) looks like a slightly older and more mature version of those saccharine-soaked "Magic Tree House" tales, but without the oh-so-slightly useful factual information. Instead, the wizardly wonders of "Harry Potter" and other fantasy worlds have been co-opted and boiled down into a scant 80 pages. If Abbott is to be commended for anything, it's for his sheer cheek. With nary an apology he whips up a bunch of fast-paced high-flying adventures artfully stolen from any number of better written books and smooshes them into titles that kids everywhere adore.

Eric, Julie, and Neal are best friends. They play soccer together. They go to school together. And when Eric's stuck cleaning the basement on a day that would perfect for a little soccer action, his buds stick by his side and help. Good thing that they do too. A mislaid kick of the ball reveals a tiny crawlspace under the basement stairs. Further inspection, however, leads the three kids to an amazing discovery. There, leading away from the basement by a flight of rainbow-colored stairs, is a world they never knew existed. Before they completely realize what is happening, the friends are wrapped up in a race to save the magical world of Droon from the desires of the evil and somewhat fishy Lord Sparr. Aiding them is the beautiful Princess Keeah, the wizard Galen, and a furry red-headed spider troll named Max. It's up to them to keep the secret of this magical world and fight the good fight when called upon.

First of all, good luck on finding any characters that aren't white and, preferably, blond. Second, I loved how Abbott covered all his bases. For the girls who aren't as into fantasy adventure but like princess tales, Keeah covers that particular need. Eric sports Harry-Potterish glasses (though, to be fair, so does Jack from the "Magic Tree House" books, so who can truly say what illustrator Tim Jessell was actually ripping off?). You have your standard Gandalf/Dumbledore white-bearded wizard. The villain has no real desires beyond power (the all-purpose bad guy need). Altogether, this is about as generic as they come. The book is better written than your average "Magic Tree House" story, of course. But that's really not saying much.

Still, the kids cry for Droon without cease or pause. They love it. They adore it. They'd own every single copy of these books if they could. I have to fight off swarming hoards of six-year-olds every time I get a new edition of the series on my shelf. Whence the popularity? Well, it's hard to deny that Abbott has zeroed in on a really ignored section of the populace. Kids who can read chapter books but still need pictures and a fast story to help them along are everywhere. And while I can't help but pray that maybe someday some author will write something just as addictive but a little less ... familiar (let's say) than this, that day has not yet arrived. So when a child asks me to recommend something since they've read all the "Magic Tree House" books already, I admit to sometimes leading them over to the "Droon" section of the library.

Hopefully this series will lure kids towards better books in the library though. In any case, while it won't win any awards for writing anytime soon, "Droon" is a staple in any library that must entice reluctant readers to its tables. Overdone, but useful.

Try my son's favorite author!
By A reader in Northern Virginia
I can't recommend this series enough. As my son's attention span increased (as he was nearing his fourth birthday), I turned to chapter books to offer him some variety (and reduce my boredom). Having experimented with dozens of alternatives, Tony Abbott's Droon series is my son's (and, let's be honest here, my) unequivocal favorite. I'm still astounded by my son's fascination with the magical world of Droon, a parallel universe where good versus evil wage an intricate, ever-evolving struggle against a rich, fantasy-laden backdrop. I genuinely enjoy reading these books aloud. We've read all of books in this series, and we've read most repeatedly as we await the next installment. Each story builds upon its predecessor, so The Hidden Stairs and the Magic Carpet is definitely the place to start. The books offer characters for every child to identify with; boys may prefer the bespeckled Eric or the more rambunctious Neal, girls may favor the quick-thinking Julie or Princess Keeah, the junior wizard -- all four (plus the adorable spider-troll Max) contribute mightily to the team's effort. Tony Abbott packs these books with vivid descriptions and non-stop action without frightening young readers (or listeners). Open the basement door and visit Droon - you won't be sorry.

Wonderful book for third graders!

I bought a class set of this book for my third grade class. They absolutely loved it and begged to be able to read it every day! They couldn't wait for the next books in the series to come out. It was easy to read and follow the adventure.

DEFINITELY GOOD
By DAVID BRYSON
Robinson's 'Definition' dates from 1954. That places it after Ayer's Language Truth and Logic and Russell and Whitehead's Principia Mathematica, but before the published work of J L Austin and before the major works of the new school of moral philosophers, notably R M Hare author of The Language of Morals and Freedom and Reason, who saw the terms used in moral philosophy as expressing evaluations rather than as describing objects.

This was the heyday of the Oxford school of linguistic philosophers. It may be an unfashionable view, but I see their approach as valuable and important. Ayer had argued, for instance, that one does not actually see or hear things but only receives sense-data (Russell's 'sensibilia') of them, and that pure logic should be rigorously independent of human psychology. This kind of thing could not go on, and Austin, author of Sense and Sensibilia, was the stylish leading advocate of a view that asserted that the ordinary terms of human speech were philosophically legitimate. Austin was also the author of How To Do Things With Words, and I don't deny that that much of the philosophical writing of the time was clever-clever rather than significant in playing games with verbal expressions, but its real value in stripping out solemn and unnecessary abstraction remains. Where Robinson is admirably level-headed is in ignoring the aspects of the fashion that were fashionably trivial, in refusing to toy with words and in subjecting his contemporaries to the same detached analysis that he brings to Plato, Aristotle, Hobbes, Kant and the rest of them. I had personal experience of both Ayer and Robinson, and in comparison with the frothy velocity of Ayer the slow and taciturn Robinson could seem a bit of an old cart-horse. In terms of lasting significance it all reads very differently to me now. Ayer said the truth at the end of a TV interview in which he was asked how his doctrines had stood the test of time. 'Oh, they're wrong' he said.

Robinson explores definition along two axes. One is the simple distinction between informative and stipulative definition, a stipulative definition being one that legislates its own meaning, such as that i is to mean the square root of -1. However the main structure of the book is around the three issues of when we are defining words or other symbols, when definition consists of relating the symbols to the things symbolised, and when - if ever - a definition can be said to define things directly. Robinson is fully aware that language is an unstable and changing thing, and he is rather conservative in stigmatising certain uses of the word 'definition' even 50 years ago as being bad and slipshod expression. He loosens his logical corsets a little at this point and some of his prejudices, e.g. against the word 'psychoanalysis', have nothing to say to us now and are not central to his argument anyway. It seems to me that the word 'definition' has got out of the corral these days. We talk about 'defining features' in someone's life without implying that these features distinguish the person's life from everyone else's, and I see nothing wrong with that. In fact I would have liked Robinson to deal a bit more with the issue of when a definition may be partial rather than exhaustive. Robinson would probably have viewed it as wrong to 'define' a lion as a feline, as this does not distinguish it from a tiger or a bobcat. On the other hand I'd say that putting a lion as opposed to a hyena into the category of felines can reasonably, as a matter of accepted usage, be called defining it as a feline. At worst his severity is a good fault, far better than the opposite tendency, but I feel it gets out of hand in his special use of 'names' whereby someone's surname does not qualify for the term 'name'. In general I have some difficulty with his view that it is impossible to define individuals, on the grounds that it is impossible to discover characteristics that any individual does not share with someone else. He concedes that a synthetic definition, e.g. 'Julius Caesar is the author of the Gallic Wars' is possible, but not an analytic definition. To define Julius Caesar by his parentage and the dates, times and places of his birth and death would surely do the trick, even before DNA came to our aid, although it would not have helped anyone recognise Julius Caesar when he met him.

What is really impressive about this book is its author's refusal to be impressed. He is in no way polemical, but his concentration rarely or never lapses, and there are a couple of memorable sideswipes at Ayer and at Kant's notorious use of '7 + 5 = 12' as a specimen of a synthetic proposition, Robinson regarding it as a mere abbreviation. I think he describes the work somewhere near the start as being for the general reader. I won't actually quarrel with that, so lucid is the reasoning and its exposition, although he ought to have given a translation for the bit of medical Latin that he pillories at one point. This purports to be a definition of (I think) motor neurones, which it seeks to define by their colour, texture and proximity to one another. He was fully up to speed with the work of his contemporaries, and when he says that 'good' describes next to nothing he was clearly on the wavelength of Hare and co before they published a word. One of his examples has always left me uneasy, namely Aristotle's supposed 'definition' of what is translated as 'happiness'. Robinson accepts the standard translation 'happiness is an activity of the soul in accordance with virtue', but says briskly that this only purports to be a definition and is actually talking about the way to achieve happiness, not about happiness itself. I'm sure he's probably right, but I can never get it out of my head that the alleged 'activity' (energeia) is a seeming coinage, and that 'eudaimonia' usually means acceptability to the gods. There are perfectly good Greek words for 'happiness' and 'activity' if he had wanted to talk about those, and I sometimes wonder (although I wouldn't dare suggest to the learned) whether this passage is not about being true to our proper selves - something like 'well-being is the spirit's life in action according to its proper talent'. This would make it a genuine definition, just not the usual one.

Obviously this is not a book for everyone. For those whom it's for it is a very fine and helpful piece of work indeed.

"definition" the confused concept
By hadi rabiei
one of the chapters of this book is about "real definition".
Robinson believed that the notion of real definition is a confusion of at least twelve activities.some of these activities are legitimate and extremely valuable activities, but we shuld not call them "real definition", and some of them are wholly bad.
real definition as search for essence is a bad activity because it has some false premises.
I wrote a reaserch about real definition in islamic logicians attitudes and addapted it whit Robinson's book.

Learn Like a Pirate: Empower Your Students to Collaborate, Lead, and Succeed, by Paul Solarz

Collaboration. Empowerment. Student Leadership. These buzz words get a lot of press, but what do they really mean for today's students? Can students really handle the responsibility of leading the class? Can they actually learn what they need to if they are working together so often? Won't all this freedom cause chaos in the classroom? Not if you're teaching them to learn like PIRATES!

Peer Collaboration builds community and supports teamwork and cooperation.
Improvement-focused learning challenges students to constantly strive to be their best.
Responsibility for daily tasks builds ownership in the classroom.
Active learning turns boring lessons into fun and memorable experiences.
Twenty-first century skills engage students now and prepare them for their futures.
Empowerment allows students to become confident risk-takers who make bold decisions.

In Learn Like a PIRATE, teachers will discover practical strategies for creating a student-led classroom in which students are inspired and empowered to take charge of their learning experience. You'll learn strategies for:
- Crafting active, relevant, and interesting lessons
- Creating opportunities for student leadership
- Providing effective and beneficial feedback
- Instilling confidence so students can take risks
- Increasing curiosity and passion for learning
Incorporate the techniques and strategies Paul Solarz uses in his student-led classroom and watch your students transform into confident, collaborative leaders.

"In Learn Like a PIRATE, Paul Solarz explains how to design classroom experiences that encourage students to take risks and explore their passions in a stimulating, motivating, and supportive environment where improvement, rather than grades, is the focus. The particular techniques (and the underlying philosophy) he offers are highly consistent with teaching practice at the distinguished level in my Framework for Teaching. In that model, I tried to describe, at the distinguished level, classrooms in which the teacher has created a community of learners, with the students themselves assuming much of the responsibility for what occurs there. Mr. Solarz offers specific ideas for how to accomplish that."
- Charlotte Danielson, author of Enhancing Professional Practice: A Framework for Teaching

"As I read Learn Like A PIRATE I regretted that I was not teaching in the classroom where I would be able to work with students in the thoughtful and imaginative ways that he suggests. It is rare that we have a first hand report of the day to day practicalities of transforming classes into places where students can become self-directed, curious, interdependent learners. Paul has succeeded in sharing his passion for authentic 21st century teaching as well as inspiring us to imitate and invent our own models for preparing our students for an increasingly complex world of invention and problem solving."

Review
"For learning to be relevant and meaningful in the eyes of students today school experiences need to be more learner centric. Paul Solarz has crafted the perfect guide to help invigorate classroom learning experiences to empower students to take ownership over their learning."
- Eric Sheninger, Senior Fellow at the International Center for Leadership in Education and author of Digital Leadership

"Would your class fall apart without you? Could your students learn if you didn't speak for an entire day? In Learn Like a PIRATE, Paul Solarz shares methods you can use to create a student-led classroom -- and prepare your students for a lifetime of self-led learning."
- Daniel H. Pink, author of Drive and A Whole New Mind

"While many teachers tend to be at the helm of the ship, Learn Like a PIRATE is a model for teaching from the crow's nest: having a clear vantage point of the class and its direction, but letting students steer their learning. Paul has recaptured the "pirate" spirit in his own way. Diving into the activities of his classroom, we see how students take charge of their learning--and how daring teachers make it happen."
- Angela Maiers, Founder of Choose2Matter and author of The Passion Driven Classroom and Classroom Habitudes

There are countless books and articles on how to change school systems to pave the way for 21st Century Education, and most of them are, at best, wishful thinking for an implicitly distant future. Paul Solarz's book is invaluable in that it tells the real life story of how he is doing that right now in his classroom.
- Gabriel Rshaid, Professional Development Associate at The Leadership and Learning Center and author of The 21st-Century Classroom

I had AHA moments galore reading this book!
By Leslye
I love, love, LOVE this book! I've followed @paulsolarz on Twitter for some time and am truly a sponge for all the collaborative classroom ideas that he shares with us. This book is brilliant! He takes us into his classroom, sharing what works, sharing notes from parents and students, and QR codes on pages that take you directly to his blog posts where you can see his classroom in action first hand. In this book you'll gain ideas for setting up a student-led classroom with a plethora of resources. Paul shares how he makes it happen on a budget- I loved his Shared Reading idea using his kindle, his classroom meeting agenda, how he teaches empathy, how he uses responsibility partners, give me 5s, sets up behavior for success, how he uses portfolios to show evidence of growth, how routines/rituals and classroom jobs help establish a culture. I loved the input on competitive games, project based learning and found it refreshing to learn how Paul has infused great leaders like Kylene Beers' Signposts for close reading and Covey's Seven Habits of Highly Effective People.
I could go on and on! I bought 4 books and gave them to friends to read as soon as I finished it. Curious as to what REARJMCL is all about? Read the book to find out! Super great stuff!

One of the Best Books of Its Kind
By Lex Icon
There's certainly no shortage of books about teachers and their favorite lessons we should all be using as quickly as we get back to our classrooms. But this isn't one of them. It's a lot better than that.

The real strength of this book—and it is VERY strong—is the writer himself. Mr. Solarz is the guy whose class you always wanted to be in. Page after page, you get to discover what a thoughtful, compassionate, courageous, and creative person he is. His notions of student independence are so much farther along than most of the other books I've read on this subject thatt it's hard for me to make any fair comparisons.

Here's the thing: We send kids to school not so they'll learn to be dependent on wise and caring adults but for just the opposite reason: we want them to be able to flourish on their own independently of our care.

So why not build that independence right into the classroom every minute of the day? That seems to be the essential question this book asks. And it answers it with a resounding "Why not!"

What Mr. Solarz asks us to do is not easy. I know. I've tried a lot of it. Trusting the kids, trusting myself, trusting that things will work out OK in the end when we don't always know where we're headed in the beginning—all of this takes courage and faith in kids and in ourselves.

Clearly, Mr. Solarz has this kind of faith. He also has the pedagogical mastery to make the nuts and bolts of this approach work well for himself and for others.

Can't Put it Down!
By Brian
For those educators who believe in collaborative learning and empowering students, this book not only reinforces your beliefs, but it also gives fresh insights and ideas to try in your classroom. For educators who are on the fence about trying more collaborative learning strategies, I strongly encourage you to read Paul's book. From the first few pages, the reader is hooked, as if a PIRATE has hooked a fish.

One of the things I enjoy the most about the book is that I do not recall one time where the focus of a single paragraph was on Paul's students' standardized test scores. I am an educator, and I am a "data-nerd." I know there is a place for some of the data we are required to track. It is refreshing, though, to read a book that is literally all about the students and strategies a teacher uses to make the classroom about the students. This book shows educators that the critical content of state standards can be addressed without students sitting in rows all facing the board. The students we teach are growing up in a social world; with Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, etc. Our methods must change some to address the changes that are taking place in our world.

The ideas and insights in this book are relevant. The comments and anecdotes are from the teacher, his students, or his students' parents. You can tell that Mr. Solarz truly believes in what he teaches. I encourage all educators (and even non educators) to pick the book up and give it a try. Even if a full day of student's leading a classroom isn't "your thing", I know everyone can at least pull some ideas out of this book to try in their classroom to give students some say in how they learn. It's most definitely a book for all!

Great Business Book!
By Student 4ever
As a student who regularly fell asleep over most textbooks, I was really surprised to be able to read through this book feeling like I was reading a magazine. It was actually kind of fun. It's very well-organized, but I was able to skip around to the topics I most needed to know about in any order without feeling like I'd "missed" something. BUSN provides a very complete introduction to many business topics, and the examples and scenarios are very timely and relevant, very "now." The graphics, colors, and layouts are super too. I didn't feel like I was reading something meant for my parents. I wish more textbooks and business books were available in this format; check it out!

BUSN is worth reviewing!
By K. Gilroy
Another intro to business textbook? Yes, but this one is different. The examples are up-to-date, the writing is crisp and catchy, the pages are visually interesting and the overall effect is entertaining! Best of all, it's concise. What I particularly like is that the shorter "magazine feel" of the book allows the entire text to be covered in one semester. Take a look! You'll be pleasantly surprised. A refreshing change to the standard 400 page+ book.

This is a great textbook
By Student
Easy to follow, interesting to read. BUSN is one of the best textbooks I have had in university. This is broad in its scope, but addresses important business topics and terminology in sufficient detail that allowed me to confidently go on in my business studies. It didn't seem like a textbook, but more like an informal meeting with my professor during office hours. I especially liked the graphics and capsules in each chapter; these demonstrated the business concepts in real life examples, and made them visually interesting.

I wish my other textbooks had been more like this one!

Review

“Hands down, the best book I’ve read this year. Brilliant, compelling, and haunting.” —Suzanne Brockmann, New York Times bestselling author

“Readers will cheer on Evelyn when the power dynamic with her lying, cheating husband shifts, even while they watch her flirting with disaster in her steamy affair with Noah. A solid choice for Liane Moriarty readers.” —Library Journal

“Stone (a nom de plume of romance writer Victoria Dahl)...ably switches to darker suspense in a compelling story exploring what lurks behind a seemingly perfect life.” —Booklist

“Stone pens a great story that will have readers wondering what will happen next to the characters involved in this mysterious tale...Fascinating tale told by a talented storyteller!” —RT Book Reviews

“Victoria Helen Stone renders the obsessions and weaknesses of her characters with scorching insight. Her sterling prose creates a seamless atmosphere of anticipation and dread, while delivering devastating truths about the nature of sex, relationships, and lies, often with a humor that’s rapier-sharp. Evelyn, After reads like Gone Girl with a bigger heart and a stronger moral core.” —Christopher Rice, New York Times bestselling author

About the Author

Victoria Helen Stone is the nom de plume for USA Today bestselling author Victoria Dahl. After publishing more than twenty-five novels, she is now taking a turn toward the darker side of genre fiction. Born and educated in the Midwest, she finished her first manuscript just after college. In 2016, the American Library Association awarded her the prestigious Reading List Award for outstanding genre fiction. Having escaped the plains of her youth, she now resides with her family in a small town high in the Rocky Mountains, where she enjoys hiking, snowshoeing, and not skiing (too dangerous).

Romance story -- Great Descriptions, Okay Plot
By A. Reader
Billed on the Kindle First page as a psychological suspense story, "Evelyn, After" would fit in nicely on a bookshelf with other Harlequin romance novels. If you are a fan of that genre, you will probably enjoy this book. Here is a quick review, without spoilers:

WRITING -- The reader experiences the story through Evelyn, and is privy to every thought she has while processing her husband's recent affair. Evelyn swims through various emotions in her attempts to come to grips with the events on the night she discovers he is cheating on her. The book can be a bit disorienting at times, as the author alternately subtitles each chapter as "Before" or "After." The reader is whipped back and forth in time, first experiencing Evelyn's initial reactions followed by the choices the "new" Evelyn makes, with the sequence repeated throughout the book. I can appreciate that this creates tension in the earlier chapters, but near the end of the book, a reader can easily deduce the events of the "Before" chapters because of facts already revealed in the "After" chapters.
Ms. Stone entertains the reader with many descriptive passages, such as: "She couldn't remember whatever demons she'd been fighting in her sleep, but there were plenty more crouched and waiting for her when she woke." Another great picture: "...she'd imagined herself growing into an artist with wild, creative friends...Now everything about her was dull...She was one of those moms she'd watched on TV as a child. The pleasant owner of a home on a cul-de-sac, a sight she'd only witnessed in movies until she'd bought that home for herself." These types of passages are peppered throughout the book, and made the book more enjoyable.

PLOT -- Ninety per cent of the book concerns Evelyn, centering on her thoughts and actions. Faced with her husband's infidelity as well as the secret she must share concerning her husband's last night with his mistress, Evelyn's subsequent actions at times might seem unbelievable. However, who can tell what a person's emotions might impel them to do, and the only time I had to suspend belief was when she talked about dropping four sizes in two weeks. Evelyn's choices made sense as she struggled to bring order to the chaos that suddenly invaded her normal life.

WHAT ABOUT... -- The author drops a couple of f-bombs as well as a vulgarity here and there. However, I felt the f-bombs were appropriately spoken in the one conversation where they occurred, and the vulgarities were used sparingly and not scattered throughout the book on every other page. The sex scenes were handled delicately, and as a reader I understood exactly what was happening without the author resorting to language typically used by high schoolers in the locker room.

BOTTOM LINE -- Essentially, this is a story of someone’s wife becoming the woman she has kept locked inside for twenty years. It is not an incredible story nor is it horrible. It is okay, and as I previously stated, Harlequin romance readers will enjoy this one. Let's call it 3-1/2 stars (extra half-star for the great descriptions).

Probably would have liked it if it were categorized properly
By J. Z. Powell
SPOILERS AHEAD. Like another reviewer mentioned, this was marketed as psychological thriller/suspense, and the first third of the book did provide that. But towards the midway point it just sunk a lot into the midlife crisis the main character was going through. Lots of agonizing introspection, not very suspenseful or thrilling at all. I skipped to the end and there was a kind of twist, but it really wasn't all that shocking given what we know about that character. Lots of sex and body image issues, all handled well but I believe a better fit for the romance genre. Author bio says she's taking a turn towards "darker" side of genre fiction but I personally didn't think throwing in a crime and a suicide attempt into what's pretty much a romance novel makes it very dark. Again, the book was definitely well written but it was not marketed properly at all. Two stars for the writing quality.

ONE OF THE FINEST BOOKS I'VE READ IN 2016!
By A Journey Without Map
If the author of the addictive romantic suspense novels in the Troubleshooters series such as The Unsung Hero, Gone Too Far, Over the Edge and Out of Control described Evelyn, After as “the best book I've read this year (2016)," it was good enough for me. Taking New York Times bestselling author Suzanne Brockmann’s verdict at face value proved to be a wise choice as historical and contemporary romance author Victoria Dahl turned psychological suspense thriller author Victoria Helen Stone’s debut novel in her new avatar is a stunning read, well-conceived and brilliantly executed.

Evelyn, After follows the emotionally heartbreaking, electrifying story of a forty-plus Evelyn Tester who leads a seemingly happy life. Married close to two decades to Dr. Gary Tester, a psychiatrist by profession, the Testers are blessed with a smart and healthy seventeen-year-old son Cameron Tester who will be off to college soon. Life couldn’t be more promising. But Evelyn’s world came crashing down one evening when she received a phone call from Gary to rush to the site of an accident. One thing leads to another, spinning her world out of control. She’s sick with rage, horror and grief at discovering what her husband was doing to her. Sick that she was married to a man she didn’t know at all. Evelyn had worked, and toiled, almost the entire past two decades for her family – raised money for whichever school Cameron attended, volunteered her time and energy all for the sake of her family. But it all came to nothing. Fury was burning deep inside her.

Then there’s Juliette Whitman, all of thirty-seven, a sweet and lovely perfect blond second-grade teacher, with two perfect little children aged six and eight and a handsome forty-year-old husband Noah Whitman, who owns the Whitman Gallery, a tasteful and elegant boutique shop. Married for over eleven years, the Whitmans, like the Testers, are also leading a seemingly perfect life, respected in the community, and it seems nothing could possibly destroy such a family. Or is it?

Evelyn, After by Victoria Helen Stone is one absorbing read with elements of intrigue, suspense, and romance. Victoria nails you in suspense from beginning to end. The storyline is forever winding, but is always plausible and never unbelievable. The characters are unique and fairly well-fleshed out and realistic, and their roles carefully considered and formed. What makes Evelyn, After so enjoyable is the dialogue between the characters, specially between Evelyn Tester and Noah Whitman. It added flavour to the overall distinctiveness of the story. What really stands out was Victoria’s flowing writing and narrative which really make it easy to follow the story. I was also deeply impressed by the “before” and “after” format used in alternating chapters, which was persuasive and convincing in its delivery. In the end, I’m thrilled to concur with bestselling author Suzanne Brockmann. Evelyn, After by Victoria Helen Stone is one of the most engrossing and absorbing books across all genres that I’ve read in a long time.
