K-Gr 2—Sam is bewildered when he discovers that his jelly doughnut has been sucked dry. Exasperated and determined to solve the mystery, he sets a trap. Using a hamper and a ketchup-filled doughnut, Sam waits. It doesn't take very long to capture the two, small culprits. The prisoners turn out to be "jampires," magical creatures who subsist on jam. The jampires apologize for their thievery, explaining that they are far from home and got hungry. After befriending Sam, they fly him to their homeland. The land of jampires is full of dessert: an enormous jar of jam, mountains of blueberry pie, sherbet snow, ice cream moon, and sponge cake castles. Finally home, the jampires are reunited with their mothers, who are grateful to Sam. They express their thanks via daily baskets of jam-filled doughnuts. The jampires no longer take Sam's jam, but readers should beware. The detailed cartoon illustrations are rendered with pencil and watercolor in a muted palette across full-bleed spreads. Much of the conversation appears in traditional cartoon word bubbles. VERDICT A good choice for the playful storytime.—Laura Hunter, Mount Laurel Library, NJ

Praise for Jampires:

"A satisfying concept, friendly, Sendak-inspired colored-pencil-and-pastel illustrations, cartoonish attractiveness, and plain old wackiness make this sweet story a winner." --Kirkus Reviews
"Galloping verse and cartoons dusted with humor and magic add up to a light, dessert-themed mystery that's both silly and sweet." --Publishers Weekly

Sam finds himself in jammy situation, when he bites into a dried-out jam doughnut
By Sussman
This is a book where the narrative gives the reader a `sweet tooth' laden fun and unpredictability - but very much a child friendly tale.
When Sam bites into a dry doughnut, the quick-witted jam aficionado sets up a cunning plan to entrap the robbers who seemed to have sucked his jam doughnuts dry. He soon finds two culprits who are infant `Jampires', these unusual creatures introduce him, via somewhat mystic trip, to Jampire Land. This is where his adventures really begin. Sarah McIntyre comes to fore with her brilliantly imaged illustrations that entertain and gel so very well with the narrative - if anything the combination is very much a `force-multiplier that makes the story appeal both to the child and the parent. This is a book that is jam packed with goodness - pun intended, sorry just could not help it.

3 year-old Loves Jampires
By SweetPea
This is more an observation since I bought this book for my daughter. She finds this to be one of the funniest books around! She squeals with laughter with each turn of the page! We usually read books at bedtime, but she thinks the vampires are so funny that this one might only be allowed reading during the day!

SUPERB! Skilled rhyming, great story, appealing and original illustrations.
By D. Jennings
I'd give this book six stars if I could! Summary of the plot is above so I won't repeat it. Now that the winter weather has arrived, we've been spending lots of time reading, and I'm disappointed to say that many recent picture books try for rhyming text and fail awfully.....but here, here is a book which has not only a clever and original story, and superb illustrations, but REALLY GOOD RHYMES. Meter! Rhyme scheme! Absolutely flawless, bouncy rhythm! Check it out:
"There's no jam," yelled Sam, "this doughnut's all wrinkly
This doughnut is jamless and dry
Someone got to the doughnut before me
And sucked out the jamminess. Why?"
(later)
So Sam set a trap before going to bed
And used his dry doughnut for bait
Instead of the jam, he used ketchup instead
And hid under the covers to wait.
The four-year-old reading this with me loved the story (and brought it up later when we were in Dunkin Donuts)...but equally important, I think--- this is one that I enjoy reading to her. Kids can tell if the adult reader is enthusiastic, or if it's more like "oh, all right, ONCE more and then I'm fed up with this one..." I'm happy to read this one over and over. High marks for both the writing and the illustrations. I'm going to look for more books by this author.
