This latest publication in a series of excellent texts highlights the specific features in AX2012 that address requirements of the discrete manufacturing industry. The book is well written and illustrated. The introduction clearly describes different scenarios found in the discrete world and summarizes the major features found in AX2012 that address those specific requirements. The summary provides an overview of the major changes in AX2012 and a chart that describes the specific areas in AX2012 that have changed or introduced new functionality as it applies to the discrete world. This overview will be instrumental to those who need to quickly focus on the new features and provide a guide to targeted learning. As a seasoned AX consultant I find this text an excellent resource that will be used to gain deeper insight into areas I'm already familiar with and those new areas of functionality found in AX2012. Segments on Lean, service management, projects and others all provide excellent overviews and insights into functionality that is available. I highly recommend this text to implementation consultants and end users who are interested in gaining deeper understanding of Microsoft's Dynamics AX 2012 in the discrete manufacturing world. I expect that I will be referring back to this text numerous times to refresh my memory and to gain additional insights.

Scott continues his tradition of writing outstanding reference books for Dynamics AX with his latest release. I've read and made use of every previous book on AX/Axapta that he's written. This version with focus on Discrete Manufacturing for AX2012 provides a good balance between manufacturing theory and best practices, with the appropriate 'how to' in Dynamics AX. The case studies cross a broad spectrum of industries and businesses, covering a suitable breadth to cater for a large reader base. I've been implementing Dynamics AX since 2003 and consider his books a must-have for anyone in this business.

What's the big deal about big brains? They're a costly enhancement, says neurobiologist John Allman in Evolving Brains. "Animals with big brains are rare," he stresses. "If brains enable animals to adapt to changing environments, why is it that so few animals have large brains? The reason is that big brains are very expensive." He examines the whys and wherefores of large-brain evolution, and draws out the connections between large brains and long lives; shows why major evolutionary advances are often made by small predators; makes you appreciate why mammals, burdened by the cost of warm-bloodedness, were unable to unseat the dinosaurs; and more. So, while large brains such as the ones we humans enjoy may give survival advantages to individuals, some species have done (and did) just fine for millions of years with pea brains.

Rather than talking only about cells, circuits, neurotransmitters, and genes, or gliding up to the ethereal regions of psychology and philosophy, Allman looks at the whole organism--the "middle-sized, middle-distanced objects," as Willard Van Orman Quine said. "Brains exist because the distribution of resources necessary for survival and the hazards that threaten survival vary in space and time," Allman writes. Even single-celled organisms such as bacteria have brainlike functions that enable them to find food and avoid toxins. Starting with the brainlike activity of Escherichia coli, the populous bacterial tenants of our intestines, Allman (professor of biology at the California Institute of Technology) traces the development of brains from small to large, simple to complex. His account focuses on three themes: "that the essential role of brains is to serve as a buffer against environmental variation; that every evolutionary advance in the nervous system has a cost; and that the development of the brain to the level of complexity we enjoy--and that makes our lives so rich--depended on the establishment of the human family as a social and reproductive unit." From that level of complexity he asks an intriguing question: Why has the human brain become smaller in the past 35,000 years? His answer: "The domestication of plants and animals as sources of food and clothing served as major buffers against environmental variability. Perhaps humans, through the invention of agriculture and other cultural means for reducing the hazards of existence, have domesticated themselves."

The Brain's Past

Humans share a desire to explain our place in nature and through such explanations to make sense of our unique role on earth. In his new book, Evolving Brains, John Allman, a distinguished comparative neuroscientist, takes on this fundamental question from the perspective of brain evolution. One of his central themes is that duplication was fundamental in the evolution of brains. Gene duplications could provide a substrate for diversification of structures that would expand the brain's repertoire. In a beautifully illustrated part of the book, Allman traces the evolution of warm-blooded animals, weaving together modern neuroscientific findings with anthropological data. In the discussion of primate brains, Allman is particularly insightful. He eludicates the evolutionary forces that led to brain specializations. For example, fruit-eating primates have larger relative brain sizes than leaf-eating primates. Evolving Brains is a wonderful read. Great for the holidays!

I purchased this book for Keith Chapman's arrangement of "Bring a Torch, Jeanette Isabella" as it is a very impressive, yet challenging piece. I didn't get to use it since I was gone for Christmas, and didn't have enough time to work it up to the level I wanted it to be, but really enjoyed using the settings of "Hark the Herald Angels Sing", "Away in a Manger" for offertory/prelude selections. "Pastorale" and "Gaelic Air" (variations on O Danny Boy) are also great and appropriate for nearly any time of the year. There are several other great settings in there appropriate for the holidays that I haven't tackled yet, but all in all the book is wonderful.

About the Author
Robert Manning is a professor in the Rubenstein School of Environment and Natural Resources at the University of Vermont where he teaches and conducts a program of research on national parks and related areas.

Martha Manning has a degree in art from the University of Vermont and practices at her studio in Burlington, Vermont. Over the past decade, they have walked many of the world’s great long-distance trails.

This book's a keeper

I have always believed there is no problem that a walk in the woods won't help fix. Bob and Martha Manning have made a distinctive case for this philosophy and show us plenty of places to try it out. Their book Walking Distance is eloquent. The photographs bring back memories of my own treks on some of these same trails. Just as important, however, is their message that walking is for all of us... young and old. It helps us gain a sense of who we are and how we fit into the grand scheme of things. I don't know how many walks I have left in me, but Bob and Martha have nudged me to begin planning the next one.

Great Book for All Hikers

This is a wonderful book for those seeking to learn about some of the world's best long-distance hikes. The Mannings have hiked for many years and they share their insights, experiences, and enthusiasm in this book. The book provides many tips and suggestions on how to prepare for and plan a long-distance hike. Most of the book is devoted to describing 30 long-distance trails around the world. The authors provide useful information for each trail, including length, accommodations, degree of challenge, whether one can walk the trail in sections, trail permit requirements, and hiking season. Each trail has a good general description of the trail, its geography, history, and distinguishing features. Readers can get a good sense of each of these trails and whether it's one they would want to hike or not. Many color photographs are also included illustrating the trails. (One would need a more detailed guide for hiking many of these trails, and definitely maps. However, additional sources of information are provided for each trail.) I've hiked several of these trails and would love to hike more of them. Even if you don't plan on hiking, this book provides one with an appreciation for many of the world's great natural and cultural landscapes. Highly recommended!!

We were looking for some inspiration to get us thinking more seriously about doing long-distance walking...and this book turned out to be just the ticket (in an almost literal sense). If you are just thinking about it, this book will get you started down the path--it did us.
