The 2nd edition includs over 40% more information such as new methods for analyzing delays with examples of the proper approach. The author also includes a new chapter on risk managment which focuses on the delay-related risks of the various parties in a construction project.

From Chapter One: Hearing the CallWe first heard the term “Sacred Commerce” from our friend Ayman Sawaf (he and his partner Rowan are the authors of a book of the same title). As entrepreneurs and seekers, we felt two of our passions—business and spirituality—kindled by Sawaf ’s words. Another of his sayings caught our attention: “merchant priests,” referring to a past and present lineage of “financial alchemists” transforming the world through dedication to intentional enterprise, “holy business” (consider the possibility). Ayman’s words gave form to a new life-purpose for us: Sacred Commerce has been our navigating star ever since.With the rise of a merchant class, the Industrial Revolution, and the accumulation of wealth separate from church and state, money and materialism have monopolized the passion of our modern times. We give obeisance in tall corporate towers and worship in mega-malls that dwarf our church spires in height and opulence. Prayer, meditation, and yoga are no longer spiritual paths but “coping mechanisms” for the tributes demanded by the high priests of advertising.The indigenous tribes of the Amazon basin call us the Termite People. We devour life with a consumptive gnawing while occupied by a world “out there” that leaves us ever hungry. Our consumerism has inflated the ego mechanism, what Buddhists call the “hungry ghost,” into some kind of all-or-nothing game-show race to oblivion. The human sacrifice of the ancient empires pales in comparison to the ignorance of turning our oxygen suppliers—our forests—into junk mail advertisements for air fresheners. What kind of culture jams the space on urinal disinfectants with pharmaceutical advertising? Where is this line of worship taking us?This book takes the view that the empty promise of materialism is now exposed and the game is up, and that the coming exorcism will require Sacred Community. Communion—and by that we mean love before appearances—is the antidote to our spiritual, environmental, and social degradation. For most of us, the pursuit of our livelihood occupies the majority of our attention. Thus Sacred Commerce is a manual for building a spiritual community at the workplace. The word “spiritual” may alienate some of you, since a material god requires that we scoff at alternatives and doubt the practicality and sense of those who propose them. When we use the word “spiritual” in this context, we’re not advocating the adoption of another belief system, only an authentic willingness to look deeply into our lives and see where we are worshiping something other than the fundamental reality of Oneness.Business is all about providing a service, product, or experience that the market wants. No business can succeed eluding this point. While ego pulls off the ultimate conjuring act—the subjective separate sense of “I”—we suggest that freedom from its aloneness is our heart’s desire. Those in search of this ultimate well-being are a growing segment of modern society, and they are projected to soon constitute a trillion-dollar market identified by the acronym LOHAS (lifestyles of health and sustainability). Our Western culture is just starting to understand that life is an inside job and that our consciousness is the real present. Our success with Caf? Gratitude entails training a community (our employees) in love as the state of well-being and turning them loose in a retail environment. Human beings, customers, and employees are ready to awaken, and we all can make it our “business.” This reality demands that we inquire into what possesses us as communities and as individuals; it asks that we be open to acquisition and occupation by Love. “That’s a platitude!” your ego might protest. We suggest, rather, that this is a foundation stone of a heart-based culture, one that is not only necessary to our human survival but all we’ve ever wanted!...

Interesting book

We've been exploring socially conscious ways of operating businesses. This was one of several books we've read on the subject. They've used some really unusual techniques to change the energy of the business they are running. It was fascinating to read about.
I don't think I could work in the environment they've created but I can see where it could be very beneficial to a number of people. We've
pulled a number of ideas out of this book that we are working to incorporate in our business structure. It is worth the read, not only for the good ideas but as a way to stretch the limits of what we think might be possible as far as employee interaction goes.

We are reading this book in a church study group. It teaches many things but I love the CLEARING process it teaches you,on how to clear yourself or someone else of the clutter in your head so you can focuse on the now. So you can be present in the now and not have all the clutter in your head that distracts you.

Schooling Our Children. This book is an amazing first step

This book is everything! I am proud to say that I will introduce this book to a young boy who I'll be tutoring and also to my nephew under the age of 2. @thedisabilityscholar thank you so much for creating this curriculum. Sadly growing up this was not available and my own fight to have even the simplest knowledge was great but I am thankful for your mind and the heart to make it for our generations. I truly want to give my future children a chance and not feel closed off from the world. Grade school is great but in college all too many of us suffer setbacks because we are not prepared with all of our history, nor are we given all or any of the essentials to excel. This book is going to provide that and the links in the book are amazing. I found this through Instagram and I am so thankful!

An absolute necessity for every household with youth of all ages. This book has opened so many doors to simplify the process of advancing a child's curriculum although they are apart of the typical/ advanced school system. This book has allowed me to add more challenges as well as accomplishments to my children's, nephews and nieces lives. About the Author
Linda Rief is the author or coeditor of five Heinemann titles, including Inside the Writer's-Reader's Notebook (2007), The Writer's-Reader's Notebook (2007), Adolescent Literacy (2007), Vision and Voice (1999), and Seeking Diversity (1992), as well as the author of 100 Quickwrites (2003). She is an eighth-grade teacher at Oyster River Middle School in Durham, New Hampshire, and an instructor in the University of New Hampshire 's Summer Literacy Institute. She is also a national and international consultant on issues of adolescent literacy. In 2000 she was the recipient of NCTE's Edwin A. Hoey Award for Outstanding Middle School Educator in the English/Language Arts. Her classroom was featured in the series Making Meaning in Literature produced by Maryland Public Television for Annenberg/CPB. Beyond the One Size Fits All Curriculum

In an educational world that demands conformity it is a rare treat to experience a teacher who celebrates the diversity and the gifts that each student brings to the classroom. Linda Rief knows the adoloscent mind, but more importantly she understands the heart of these ever changing students. The book opens with a realistic look at what her classroom is like - real voices of real students trying to find thenselves through reading and writing. It is the generous use of the students voices that made this book such an inspiration to me. In reading this book I was struck by the rigor in the curriculum. There is an abundance of reading and writing going on all of the time. The real difference is that the subjects and the books are chosen by the students. Engaging adoloscents with choice, time, responsibility and accountability all show her masterful understanding of this age group. She also reads to her students often and writes with them. It is this mentoring that I found to be the most valuable for me. Linda Rief is a writer showing others how she writes and struggles. It is this realness that adoloscents continue to crave in school. She is the true mentor and in her chapters on writing and reading she lays out a clear theoritical foundation for why she teaches this way. Once I read this there was no going back. In the chapters on reading and writing linda puts in many expamples of student work - and it is these examples that truely show the diversity that is smothered in many language arts classrooms. Linda Rief has a voice that speaks to the middle school teacher. She is in a real school and teaches real students. Hers is the voice of experience. This is very evident in the chapter where she explains that her students sometimes do read the same book or write on the same subject. Her understanding of the balance needed for students and for the curricular demands of the profession should pull in even the most reluctant middle school teacher. But always the balance is tipped in favor of the students need for choice, for exploration, for understanding, for real mentoring, and for the goal of being a reader and a writer for life. The book also contains a wealth of material in the appendices. These materials are a starting point for those teachers who see writing and reading as a mentoring. This is a must book for new teachers and a perfect gift for those teachers with more experience. This is a book that changed the way I teach and has helped me to look for the diversity and the heart of the adoloscent mind.

Great for all levels of teachers

If you're looking for the perfect book for a new English teacher, this is it. But it's also great if you're looking for inspiration yourself -- and by no means do you need to be a middle school teacher to benefit from it.
My copy of this book is falling apart, because I have fled to it more frequently in times of woe than any other text on teaching. Nancie Atwell's In the Middle is also close to my heart, but Rief's book is more direct and less overwhelming and so more useful in emergencies.
I teach 11th and 12th grade English, but never has this kept Seeking Diversity from being useful, even though Rief is describing her middle school classes. The environment that helps students reach their potential is the same at almost all levels, regardless of who your students are, where they're from, or how old they are. (A qualifier: I know nothing about elementary education, and so won't presume to speak to that.)
If you're looking for lots of theory and post-structuralist analysis, this is the wrong book. But if you're after nuts and bolts, and lots of them, then Seeking Diversity is what you want. It's inspiring, empowering, and tremendously useful.

About the Author

Evan M. Berman is Professor of Public Management and Director of Internationalization at Victoria University of Wellington, School of Government. Prior, he was the Huey McElveen Distinguished Professor at Louisiana State University. His areas of expertise are human resource management, public performance, local government, and public governance in Asia. He is past Chair of the American Society for Public Administration’s Section of Personnel and Labor Relations. He has over 125 publications and 12 books, including People Skills At Work (CRC Press, 2011), Essential Statistics for Public Managers and Policy Analysts, Third Edition (CQ Press, 2012), and a trilogy of books on Public Administration in Asia (2010, 2011, 2013, CRC Press). He has published in all major journals of the discipline, is Senior Editor of Public Performance & Management Review, a Distinguished Fulbright Scholar,� past University Chair Professor at National Chengchi University (Taipei, Taiwan), and a former policy analyst with the National Science Foundation.

James S. Bowman is a professor of public administration at the Askew School of Public Administration and Policy, Florida State University. Noted for this work in ethics and human resource management, Dr. Bowman is author of over 100 journal articles and book chapters, as well as editor of six anthologies. He is co-author of The Professional Edge: Competencies in Public Service (2nd ed., Sharpe, 2010) and Public Service Ethics: Individual and Institutional Responsibilities (CQ Press, 2015). Jonathan P. West is a professor and chair of political science and director of the graduate public administration program at the University of Miami. His research interests include ethics, public administration, and human resource management. He has published over 100 peer-reviewed articles and book chapters as well as nine books. He is co-author of Public Service Ethics: Individual and Institutional Perspectives (CQ Press, 2015) American Politics and the Environment (2nd. Montgomery Van Wart is a professor at California State University San Bernardino and a visiting professor at the University of Hong Kong. His publications include nine books and a substantial number of articles in the leading journals in his field. His most recent book is Leadership and Culture: Comparative Models of Top Civil Servant Training, with Hondeghem and Schwella (Palgrave Macmillan, 2015).� His research areas are administrative leadership, human resource management, training and development, administrative values and ethics, organization behavior, and general management. He also serves on numerous editorial boards and as the Associate Editor for Public Productivity & Management Review. As an instructor, he has spent as much time teaching and facilitating programs for executives and managers in public agencies as he has teaching graduate students. His training programs have been for individuals in all levels of government in the United States and executives and elected officials from foreign countries.

An excellent primer for any individual who will have people reporting to them or who will have Human Resources as part of their function. At times, it is a bit of a dry book because it's a textbook. But, it imparts knowledge and provides case studies that allows what is taught to be practically applied. I'm glad I purchased it.

Napoleon CEO: 6 Principles to Guide & Inspire Modern Leaders is one of a series including Winston Churchill CEO, Catherine the Great CEO, and Gandhi CEO. Categorized under ‘Business’ books, it focuses on six principles of Napoleon’s war-time successes: (1) audacity and character, (2) vision and strategy, (3) knowledge and preparation, (4) tactics and execution, (5) motivation and communication, and (6) Napoleonic Synergy, after an introduction called The Life of a Necessary Man.

Known to have a photographic memory, an attention to detail, and a genius for mathematics, Napoleon Bonaparte (1769-1821) was the second child of eight children and “the product of a strong mother, who was in equal parts, formidable and loving.”

He rose to prominence during the French Revolution as a military leader. “Napoleon was alternately condemned as a tyrant and oppressor and hailed as a reformer and liberator. Both assessments have claims on validity,” says the author. Axelrod turns Napoleon’s perceived negative personality traits and actions into positive ones. He also explodes some myths. For example, the myth that Napoleon was short and had an inferiority complex that spearheaded his decisions on the battlefront is debunked. Napoleon was 5’6” when the average French man was 5’4.” Axelrod documents many arguments that show Napoleon’s strength of character and his “tactical mastery, charismatic command presence, and great personal courage.”

Readers become familiar with his victories and his defeats, and the lessons he learned from both, through his personal letters and published works, and the views of other political and military leaders of his time. In his letters and works, Napoleon writes of his strategies, methods, principles, and tactics on why he won and why he lost – not accusing others, but by honestly assessing his own strengths and weaknesses.

Although Napoleon’s tactics weren’t innovative, Axelrod says what was unprecedented was his “skill, speed, ferocity, and tenacity with which he executed his attacks.” Moreover, he was a reformer. Under his leadership, the government subsidized education, promoted the sciences, introduced a program of public works (such as sewerage and a road network) and established a Code Civil – known as the Napoleonic Code.

Axelrod documents 156 clearly defined ‘lessons’ that readers can learn from Napoleon. Each lesson is short with a standardized format: (1) lesson number, (2) title encapsulating the lesson, (3) a quote, usually from Napoleon, (4) the lesson on the battlefield from Napoleon’s perspective, and (5) the lesson for modern day corporate leaders.

The lessons are practical and applicable, not just for Chief Executive Officers of corporations, but also for anyone managing a business, working as a manager or supervisor, or managing one’s own life. For anyone interested in military leaders, Napoleon, or strategies for business success - it provides enough lessons to dip into or to read from cover to cover.

The present book, a valuable addition to the English-language literature on linear algebra and tensors, constitutes a lucid, eminently readable and completely elementary introduction to this field of mathematics. A special merit of the book is its free use of tensor notation, in particular the Einstein summation convention. The treatment is virtually self-contained. In fact, the mathematical background assumed on the part of the reader hardly exceeds a smattering of calculus and a casual acquaintance with determinants.
The authors begin with linear spaces, starting with basic concepts and ending with topics in analytic geometry. They then treat multilinear forms and tensors (linear and bilinear forms, general definition of a tensor, algebraic operations on tensors, symmetric and antisymmetric tensors, etc.), and linear transformation (again basic concepts, the matrix and multiplication of linear transformations, inverse transformations and matrices, groups and subgroups, etc.). The last chapter deals with further topics in the field: eigenvectors and eigenvalues, matrix ploynomials and the Hamilton-Cayley theorem, reduction of a quadratic form to canonical form, representation of a nonsingular transformation, and more. Each individual section — there are 25 in all — contains a problem set, making a total of over 250 problems, all carefully selected and matched. Hints and answers to most of the problems can be found at the end of the book.
Dr. Silverman has revised the text and numerous pedagogical and mathematical improvements, and restyled the language so that it is even more readable. With its clear exposition, many relevant and interesting problems, ample illustrations, index and bibliography, this book will be useful in the classroom or for self-study as an excellent introduction to the important subjects of linear algebra and tensors.

About the Author
Maks A. Akivis is Professor of Mathematics at the Ben-Gurion University of the Negev in Beer-Sheva, Israel, and at the Moscow Institute of Steel and Alloys in Russia.
Vladislav V. Goldberg is Distinguished Professor of Mathematics at the New Jersey Institute of Technology in Newark.
Dr. Akivis and Dr. Goldberg are the authors of numerous papers, many of which they wrote jointly. They are the authors of the book Tensor Calculus and the monograph Projective Differential Geometry of Submanifolds. In addition, Dr. Akivis is a coauthor of the monograph Geometry and Algebra of Multidimensional Three-Webs and the book Elie Cartan (1869-1951), and Dr. Goldberg is the author of the monograph Theory of Multicodimensional (n+1)-Webs.

A decent book with lots of exercises

This book is not the best linear algebra book I've come across, but there are a lot of good things about it. The proofs are all very clear, and there are lots and lots and lots of good exercises. Something I see with a lot of math books on the same topic is that they often have a lot of exercises in common-not usually exactly the same, but difering only by a few numbers or words. But many of the exercises in this book, particularly in the early chapters on dimension, cross product, and dot product, I have not seen in any other book. The one thing about this book is that there really is not a huge amount of non-exercise text-though what there is is well-written. So maybe this would work best as a supplement to another book. One thing that can be said about that book is that, in the division of linear algebra books into computational or abstract algebra books, this book is somewhere in the middle. It starts with the axioms of a vector space, but most of the text concerns only 3-dimensional euclidean geometry-though many(but not all!) of the proofs carry over to higher dimensions without change. Also, the inclusion of so much material on the cross product-which is really useful only in applications to physics(as far as I know), not in abstract mathematics, is another unique feature of this book. Now, this book does not contain things like Gaussian elimination, but it is still not all that abstract, compared to many other books, at least. Also, this book is very short. It covers all the basics, but simply ignores some topics such as tensor products(necessary to a good treatment of tensor products, not messy and index-laden like the one here), exterior products, Jordan normal form, as well as much about what happens if the base field isn't R-in particular, anything about Hermitian or unitary matrices(Unless my memory has failed me-I don't have the book at hand to be sure these things were never mentioned, but am pretty sure).
