Master in craft, Native to the core

A Native-born speaker, with a critical ear for nuances, picking up the sublime, he avoids the overdone caricatures that others do--as they invariably insult other native-born speakers, like myself & embarrass themselves! I bought the book to tone down my dialect, when need be, (voice overs) to be more aware of my speech, never to purge/mock myself of my identity. A great book--in concert with his YouTube videos you'll see he is a Master.

About the Author
Paul Ammann, Ph.D., is an Associate Professor of Software Engineering at George Mason University. He received an outstanding teaching award in 2007 from the Volgenau School of Information Technology and Engineering. Dr Ammann earned an AB degree in Computer Science from Dartmouth College, and M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in computer science from the University of Virginia.

Jeff Offutt, Ph.D., is a Professor of Software Engineering at George Mason University. He is editor-in-chief of the Journal of Software Testing, Verification and Reliability; chair of the steering committee for the IEEE International Conference on Software Testing, Verification, and Validation; and is on the editorial boards for several journals. He received the outstanding teacher award from the Volgenau School of Information Technology and Engineering in 2003. Dr Offutt earned a B.S. degree in Mathematics and Data Processing from Morehead State University, and M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in computer science from the Georgia Institute of Technology.

This is a good introduction to testing for graduate CS students or senior undergrads

I've taught from this book. I used it as a textbook in Florida Tech's software testing 2 course, which is focused on teaching programmers how to test their own code and how to design and write (including test) test tools. Students in that course have taken a course in black box testing already. That is, they understand a lot about testing a software system from an external point of view. The goal in this course is to help them understand how to test code well when they know the code.

I agree with the comment that this book doesn't try to train readers/students how to do unit tests. We use a different book to teach students the mechanics of unit testing. Those books teach a lot about the toolset, a lot about "best practices" for organizing tests, creating mock objects, etc. Students learn a lot about "how" but none of those books give students much insight about "what".

Ammann & Offutt help me teach students to think about what questions they want their tests to answer. Once students know what information they're looking for, the mechanics are very important, but without knowing what they're looking for, the mechanics are irrelevant.

My main criticism of the book is that it is rough sledding for several of our students. Some of the material in this book is beyond what I expect a 4th year undergraduate to learn in our course, or at least, explained in a way that is beyond them. Then again, you can make the same criticism of almost any advanced technical book.

I have a fair bit of non-academic experience in the field and, now as a professor, I work extensively with practitioners. People do things differently at different companies. The approach to testing that I primarily advocate and teach (system-level, context-driven testing) is seen as highly practical at some companies, as too sloppy at some, and as too academically pure at others. Similarly, intense unit-test-focused testing (e.g. TDD) is popular at some companies and barely attempted at others (barely done even in companies where the programmers call themselves "agile" and say they do Scrum). So it is not surprising to see some people say that what Ammann & Offutt are teaching is, in the experience of those people, impractical and unlike what they see in the real world. But the real world is a big place, and in many parts of it, this book rocks.

Raise your test thinking to the next level

The take home: Line and branch coverage are sucky measures of test quality, and one can benefit by thinking beyond them.

This book is a thorough and understandable introduction to the theory of how to design good tests for software.

It does not introduce you to JUnit, mocking, theories or other well-known implementation details, nor agile, TDD or other practical philosophies de jure. Those are meant to be covered by a supplementary text -- Lord knows plenty are available.

Instead, this book summarizes the research community's solid, language-independent answers to questions such as "how many tests do I need to write?", "what test inputs do I choose?", and "how can I measure the quality of a test suite?"

Line and branch coverage metrics are used widely in industry, familiar to most JUnit programmers. Ammann and Offut show how these are just the rudimentary beginnings of a vast, well-studied family of measures of test quality. They also argue that the same measures and design strategies apply to integration testing, system testing, and unit testing. This leads to an apparently odd organization of the book that changes your world view when you realize its brilliance.

The thesis is that metrics of this sort give managers control over setting testing goals -- such as when to stop testing. Instead of the traditional "write tests until it feels right," or "test until the budget runs out," with good coverage metrics you can set a target that balances testing effort with the risk posed by bugs. Developers of flight control systems, for instance, are required by FAA policy to use certain logic-based coverage criteria that a team writing a Wiki framework would probably forego.

The book is organized in a pedagogical way, easy to understand but occasionally loosing the forest for the trees. Examples are in Java, but the focus is on models of software represented as graphs, logic expressions, etc. Specific technologies are rarely mentioned, because the authors wanted to book to have shelf value. The book will still be relevant a decade from now.

It is not true, as some reviewers claim, that this book has no real-world significance. The book is actually very light on theory, introducing only what is necessary to understand how to test software well.

Readers who are already practiced in unit testing and who are ready to take their understanding to the next level will be opened up to a wealth of new practices and development tools.

A real-life financial thriller

A fascinating analysis of fourteen true accounting fraud cases, loaded with juicy details, and a well-researched discussion of the aftereffects on the accounting profession, from both standards and regulatory perspectives. Besides being an interesting read, I also derived substantial professional benefit from learnings related to management culture, internal controls and SOx. This book stimulated some further thoughts about the implications of fraud on the future of accounting practices in the US.

didn't meet my expectations

I read a few books on accounting fraud and this book didn't meet my expectations. I am a CPA and was looking for a more technical and advanced book, which would describe various fraud schemes in detail. This book doesn't contain any cases that I have not heard about before and has not taught me anything new. It may be a good book for someone who is new to accounting and/or just starting to learn about fraudulent companies.

Important considerations when evaluating the usefulness of this book.

As many other reviewers have noted, this is the only book on the market that is produced by ETS, the company that writes and administers the GRE; however, please know that this does not mean that buying this book is a no-brainer. Far from it. The book may be helpful to you in some respects, but I would never recommend purchasing only it to study for the GRE. I would buy it perhaps as a supplement to a book published by a third-party (like Barron's, the Princeton Review, Kaplan, etc) or not at all. These third party books really are likely to serve you FAR better, as I will try to explain. Here are the things I think you should consider as you decide whether to purchase this book:

1) The majority of the practice questions in this book are available for FREE on the ETS website. Just check out their "Prepare for the GRE" page for pdfs.
2) The POWERPREP II software (including two practice tests) which is contained on the disc accompanying this book is also available for FREE on the ETS website. Just check out their "Prepare for the GRE" page for a download.
3) Whether you go with the book or get it online, the POWERPREP II software is Windows/IE-compatible only. (Ridiculous.)
4) The Math Review section of this book is also available for FREE on the ETS website. Just check out their "Prepare for the GRE" page for a download.
5) Many of the other explanations and general tips contained in the book are also included in the free online materials (I think it's called the Practice Book) on the ETS website.
6) All that said, if you prefer to work on paper rather than on a PDF, and you don't want to print out a giant stack of pages, you may like the idea of having ETS' materials nicely printed and bound as they are in this book.
7) One nice thing about the fact that this book was written by ETS is that you get actual old GRE questions. ETS doesn't license its old questions, so all other books will have questions meant to closely approximate authentic GRE questions, but which never actually appeared on a GRE exam. However, since you can get most of these ETS-authentic practice questions for free, as I've explained, you still may not want to spend on this book. Plus, the questions that third-parties write are, for the most part, similar enough to real GRE questions to still be very good practice.
8) The down side (and I think you should think about this carefully) to this being written by ETS is that it, naturally, sells the "ETS-Kool-Aid" - HARD. What I mean is that other third-parties will shoot you straight because they are not invested in promoting the mystique of this exam. They will tell you, for example, the true fact that the GRE really measures your ability to do well on the GRE, whereas ETS' book will claim, as ETS of course must, that the GRE is predictive of your success in graduate school. In addition, third-party books will level with you about how the GRE is written and how it is graded and will teach you tips, tricks, techniques, and work-arounds for the GRE. ETS has to take itself and its exam very, very seriously, which is likely to just scare you and stress you out. Third-parties will level with you. (See also the next point.)
9) (This is to some degree an extension of the previous point.) The Math Review that the ETS has written (recall it is also available for free online) is very misleading in some ways. Firstly, it can be confusingly-presented for those dusting off old, unused math skills. Third-party prep books will serve you far better in explaining these concepts simply, although if you need help with very basic concepts (like long division), you may want to supplement with something like Princeton Review's Math Smart I (or maybe check out tutorials online if you want to save money). Secondly, there are some math topics covered by ETS in their materials that you are simply very unlikely to see on the actual GRE; seeing them in this book will just make you anxious. You do not need to master all the math ETS gives you in this book in order to get a great score on the math portion of the GRE (after all, you can still score in the 99th percentile of test-takers even if you get a few questions wrong on the test). ETS will make it sound like you must know inside and out all the math they give you in this book, but third-party books will be much more honest with you about which concepts you actually need to master, what short-hand tips and tricks you can use, what things you may just want to memorize outright, and what minimum understandings you can totally get by with on some of the trickier math topics that might come up on the GRE.
10) Only third-party books give you actual lists of vocab words that are the most likely to appear on the GRE. This book does not. These lists are very useful in studying for the GRE.

Some final thoughts. No book will guarantee you an awesome score on an exam. I suspect many poor reviews of various test-prep books on Amazon are likely just sour grapes. The truth, in my opinion, is that major third-party prep books are probably roughly equivalent in getting you familiar with, giving you good tips for, and getting you some practice on GRE questions. You have enough to worry about without stressing over which book to choose! Just pick up one of the major third-party books and let it be your primary study guide. Get this book, if at all, only as a supplement.

Unrealistic expectations from the reader

To make this review short I will just say that if you are an individual such as myself, who has struggled with math since grade school and are now trying to learn enough math to get a humble score on the GRE this is not the book you should be purchasing. This book assumes that you already have a decent understanding of mathematical concepts in Geometry, Algebra, and Statistics. For those of us who are majoring in social sciences or another non math related field this book will feel like it is skimming through weeks worth of math concepts on every single page.

I found it to be utterly impossible to understand many of the ideas presented in the book due to the cluttering of these concepts and marginal explanation of how they work together. I found the Princeton Review book to be much more organized and easy to follow due to my severe math deficiencies. The Princeton review does not attempt to teach you 3 years of math by giving you a extremely condensed and limited version of concepts that you barely understood the first time around. Instead its focus is on helping you simply get through the GRE. This book does not even allow you to look at the answer choices in the practice problems as A,B,C,D,E as you would have them on the GRE so it forces you to do the problems their way without actually providing you with enough explanation to understand those problems in the first place. The Princeton review embraces the idea of turning a hard algebra problem into a simple arithmetic problem by plugging in, this book does not even mention this invaluable strategy! Nor does it let you apply it because as stated previously, it does not provide you with A,B,C,D,E answer choices!

If you are someone who has done well in math in the past and just need a refresher for the GRE I recommend this book for you however, if you are like myself, an individual who has struggled with math since elementary school, avidly avoided math in college, and are now trying to pursue a graduate education in your (non math related) field then I would highly advice you to look into both the Princeton review and the GRE for Dummies 7th Edition books. Although not perfect they are much easier to understand for those of us who are dreadful at math.

The ETS Does It Again! Sort of. Ok not really.

As you likely know from either the title or familiarity with the ETS, this book is the Official Guide for the GRE General Test (Revised). I teach the GRE full-time and this is one of two books I require my students to purchase for two primary reasons. This is the only book made by the test-makers, so there is an extraordinarily amount of useful information here: the questions are phrased in the way that the real test phrases them, the content is fairly reflective of the real exam, and the book itself now comes with 2 paper-based and 2 computer-based versions of the test. So, in total, there are hundreds of questions to try your hand at. Secondly, each question comes with a very lengthy explanation as to why certain answers are right and often enough, why other answers are wrong.

The ETS is also kind enough to identify which questions are of what difficulty level, so you can even mark your own progress fairly well, too.

The book further comes with examples of responses to the Analytical Writing tasks, so you have a very good sense of what the ETS thinks of as "a good essay" and "a bad essay", as well.

The book is, however, fairly lacking on a number of other counts. It is not particularly useful as a stand-alone text and once you've exhausted the questions in the book, there are no other resources to use outside of it from the ETS. Additionally--and most importantly--the book lacks a functionally useful set of questions to really build on basic mathematics skills and takes for granted that test-takers will be able to perform particular operations.

My biggest gripe about the book is it's Quantitative Review (Pages 207-305), in which there are no explanations for sample problems and often, concepts are covered in ways that are actually almost unusable for the test itself. Bizarrely, in spite of the fact that the test consistently features Special Right Triangles (Pythagorean Triplets) and often requires test-takers to simplify radicals, the book makes no mention of either of these basic math concepts. These are two among many others.

Additionally, the test does not often inform students of the most efficient or effective way of working through a problem. They'll give a very accurate description of how to solve math problems in some cases, but not if it's optimal for ideal test-taking. As a prime example, there are right triangle questions featured on almost every version of the GRE and almost all of the right triangles featured have particular properties to them. But, the GRE Guide makes no mention of these properties and test-takers are left to their own devices to either figure them out or work around them in the most inefficient ways.

The book is a sort of oddity, as such: it purports to be the Official Guide of the test but it also seems purposefully left incomplete, as if the test-makers wanted to provide some help in making the test accessible, but not so much help that anyone could effectively study for it using their own materials. The cynical conclusion one might draw from this is that the ETS is heavily invested in maintaining the secrecy and mysteriousness of the test (and is also invested in test-takers re-testing) but they don't want the test to seem unduly unfair.

To improve this product, they should include more practice sets that are divided up by concept (rather than simply by difficulty) and further, they should revamp the math review, which has not changed since the good ole' days of the original GRE Guide (which was originally published over 20 years ago).

Very Helpful Book when starting to learn Tang Soo Do

I just started taking Tang Soo Do lessons and I have found this book super helpful, especially when I am at home trying to practice the movements and forms I just learned. It is a great reference book to keep you on track with your lessons so you do not get into bad habits. Very good explainations and tons of photos. Even helps with the Korean to English translations. I would highly recommend for a student of Tang Soo Do...especially a beginner.

It is helping me to learn faster..

This book consists mostly of photographs of hand and foot techniques and of the forms. As a beginning student I find these very helpful, as when it comes time to practice at home I sometimes have forgotten the new things learned in the previous class. The verbal descriptions that go with the photos are clear. In addition, newer students will find the Korean/English, English/Korean glossary of terms helpful. The author has also included a brief (too brief) history of Tang Soo Do and a lineage chart, but for me these are not the strong points of the book. Also, I would have liked to see a little more about the philosophy behind this martial art; however, the photographic explanations of the moves make the book well worth the price.

About the Author
John Currence opened City Grocery in Oxford, Mississippi in 1992. Since then, the City Grocery Restaurant Group has opened a number of restaurants, including Ajax Diner, Nacho Mama’s, Kalo’s Tavern, Big Bad Breakfast, Bouré, Lamar Lounge, The Main Event, and Snackbar. Currence is the recipient of the 2009 James Beard Award for Best Chef South and the Southern Foodways Alliance Guardian of the Tradition Award. He has appeared on television programs such as Parts Unknown, Mind of a Chef, Bizarre Foods, Treme, and Top Chef Masters and his writing has appeared in Food & Wine and Bon Appétit, among many others. He is a contributing editor for Garden & Gun magazine, a board member of No Kid Hungry (a project dedicated to eradicating childhood hunger in the United States), and an organizer and past board member of the prestigious annual Southern Foodways Symposium.

THE TEN COMMANDMENTS OF BREAKFAST


   1. THOU SHALT EMBRACETH THE DAY.
First, accept that every day is new, fresh, and unique. Position yourself in the kitchen with an attitude that reflects your solemn purpose: you are about to prepare THE MOST IMPORTANT MEAL OF THE DAY, likely for someone you care for (otherwise you would not be up and at ’em at the stove). 

   2. THOU SHALT HOLD NO MEAL HIGHER THAN BREAKFAST.
Commit to raising this disregarded meal from the depths of neglect to the place of honor it deserves. Pledge to put the same effort and passion into preparing breakfast as you would lunch or dinner. In other words, make something other than just a plate of eggs. 

   3. THOU SHALT GET THY MIND RIGHT.
This is fun, damn it. Plan ahead so you don’t stress yourself out early in the morning: shop the day before, stock strong coffee, prep certain items in advance, and find some music that gets you going in the wee hours. All of these will make the chore at hand a little easier. 

   4. THOU SHALT SLATHER WITH BUTTER.
It will not kill you (consumed in quantities within reason, that is). Just let go for a few minutes and enjoy life a little. No fat tastes better on toast with jelly or when cooking eggs (bacon fat included). 

   5. THOU SHALT ANOINTETH WITH BLACK PEPPER.
Whenever pepper is called for in an ingredients list, use freshly cracked black pepper. (The only exception is when I specifically call for white pepper.) 

   6. THOU SHALT MAKE FROM SCRATCH.
It will certainly take more time and effort, but the essence of Big Bad Breakfast is scratch cooking. It’s what made grandmother’s cooking “grandmother’s cooking.” As a matter of fact, I am certain that if my grandmothers and great-grandmothers had not succumbed to other, more natural afflictions, shame over what we accept as food these days would certainly have consumed each of them. 

   7. THOU SHALT USE RESTRAINT WITH INGREDIENTS.
Lots of folks get the wrong idea about recipes and lean toward “the more flavors and ingredients I add, the more complex the end product.” This could not be farther from the truth. The best cooking celebrates the elemental beauty of ingredients. You want to be able to taste everything in the dish, not create something that is just a muddle. 

   8. THOU SHALT SEEKETH LOCAL WHENEVER POSSIBLE.
Honey, eggs, grits, bacon, sausage, jellies, coffee, flour—whatever it is, a local product is more often than not going to have a more singular character. Visit farmers’ markets, bake sales, local farms, and locally owned grocery stores. 

   9. THOU SHALT NOT OVERCOOK.
I am fascinated with the American worry about “undercooking things.” Food can always be cooked more if it is not cooked enough, but YOU CAN’T FUCKING UNCOOK IT if you cook it too long. Granted, we shouldn’t rub raw factory chicken on our toast right before we eat, but I have been making fresh mayonnaise and Caesar dressing with raw eggs for thirty-five years and nobody has ever been sick. Trichinosis is not carried by domestic pigs, and a piece of cooked pork that’s still a little pink beats the crap out of a well-done, dried-out offering. Try the yolk runny, people. With a little salt, it transforms dishes from good to resplendent. 

   10. THOU SHALT REMEMBER THE SABBATH, BUT COOK FROM THIS BOOK EVERY DAY.
You can make pancakes for your kids, freeze them, and rewarm them later. You can make a breakfast casserole or assemble sweet rolls the night before and just turn on the oven the next day. Breakfast is a fun meal, and most of the time, it doesn’t require a ton of effort or mess. More often than not, it’s just about clearing your eyes and committing to loved ones. Remember, breakfast is a joy, not a chore, and the possibilities are endless. It just comes at a weird time of day. And if that’s the deal breaker for you, well, shit, make breakfast for dinner.

Love all the recipes but the Chorizo Migas are the best!

great book for breakfast recipes. Breakfast is my favorite meal of the day and this book hits home on so many levels. I am a huge fan of the Chorizo Migas and southwest seasoning recipes. I made this and took it to work one day and everyone couldn't believe how good it was.

About the Author
Mary Poplin (Ph.D., University of Texas) is a professor of education at Claremont Graduate University in California, where she has served as director of the teacher education program and dean of the School of Educational Studies. Poplin conducts research inside urban classrooms and schools that promote both justice and accountability. She teaches courses on pedagogy, history and philosophy of education, as well as Christian principles related to these areas. She is also a frequent speaker at Veritas Forums and for both Protestant and Catholic retreats across the country.

Deep and focusing

Deep down, my absolute favorite thing to do is shop. As I write this, I'm internally scheming how to get the biggest bang for my buck on my next errand. I like things, especially pretty ones, and acquiring them makes me feel good. As I've come to recognize this passion of mine, I've found it nagging at me a bit. I know people who hate to shop. On top of that, they also hate to accumulate clutter. Their personality enhances their ability to live simply. Not me. I feel better with full bookshelves, cupboards, and drawers. I find malls comforting and thrift stores exhilarating. Quite likely, my pension to store up treasures here on earth runs a bit too deep.

Enter: Mother Teresa, Mary Poplin, Ron Sider, and Shane Claibourne. Since recognizing the grip that my materialism has on me, I've embarked on a slow (and slightly reluctant) quest to examine it. I owned the book Rich Christians in an Age of Hunger (by Ron Sider) for about five years before I had the guts to actually read it. Then I joined the crowd reading Irresistible Revolution to find myself completely captured by its fresh and clear vision. This fall, I came across Finding Calcutta: What Mother Teresa taught me about meaningful work and service by Mary Poplin. I've long admired Mother Teresa's work and wisdom; and have also wanted to hear more from Mary Poplin since she spoke on education and poverty at the university where I teach. In spite of my reluctance, my worldview is being reshaped by such books, and my shopping habits are certainly being redefined!

Whereas Rich Christians is factual and data-full, Irresistible Revolution is passionate, funny, and, well, irresistible and revolutionary, Finding Calcutta is simple and focusing. It seems hard for these traits to not follow anything touched by Mother Teresa. Mary Poplin, an education professor, spent her sabbatical as a volunteer with the Missionaries of Charity in 1996, a year before Mother Teresa died. Her book is a reflection on how her time in Calcutta shaped her newly found Christian faith. Writing on themes such as "the church as flawed and finite", "the vow of poverty and service to the poor", and "do all things without complaining or disputing", Poplin provides a glimpse into the daily world and perspective of the Missionaries of Charity.

While Mother Teresa's words often pierce to the core of an issue, her simple lifestyle illuminates what our complicated lives lack. "There were few toys or books at the centers," writes Poplin. "The lack of toys concerned no one except an occasional volunteer, like me. I realized more clearly how Americans are accustomed to having so many things that we have trouble coping without them. In the United States, we are entertained day and night; we can hardly live our own lives for living others' lives - fictional or real - through movies, television, and the news. Both children and adults who have many things constantly want more, and then in a short while, we are restless and bored again."

While acknowledging the need for Christians to live the type of "revolutions for love" that the Missionaries of Charity practice, Poplin also recognizes that this won't look the same for everyone. She calls the Sisters of Charity "a class unto themselves", but also believes that "there are ways we would need to imitate the missionaries in order to be effective". How does this look? A few of her observations:

* Commit their lives to God and the Holy Spirit
* Follow a leader with a distinct call and submit themselves to this
* Keep themselves from worldliness while working "deeply in the troubled heart of the world"
* Love selflessly
* Pray, worship, and study unceasingly

While on one level, Finding Calcutta is a reflection of one woman's interaction with Mother Teresa and the Sisters of Charity, it is also a deeper call to the readers to discover their own `Calcutta' and to live there with the same measure of abandon. With shocking statistics and passionate pleas, Claiborne and Sider's books stirred me out of a numb slumber. I am grateful for their perspective, but also left overwhelmed by what to do next. The charge is large and my capacities are small. The simplicity and focus of the sisters in Finding Calcutta helped me acknowledge that the small ways I move toward offering my life (even addressing those darn shopping addictions) can be as "beautiful for God" as those irresistible revolutions.

A Personal Calcutta

Many have written about Mother Teresa and her work in the very needy city of Calcutta and across the world. This author, a new Christian,and teaching in an American, university, took her sabbatical to work with Mother Teresa for several months. Her intent was to learn how to apply these princpals of working for Jesus to her own life.
The author describes her spiritual journey during the sabbatical and how
returning to the teaching world in the US she was able to apply these principals to the university world in which she was living and teaching.
It is simply written, but deeply spiritual. For anyone wanting to serve Christ in their own career path, this is the book to read.

Outstanding, prayerful insights for contemplating service

I found this book extremely valuable for the inspiring (and challenging) real-life picture it offered of what a life of service in Christ can be. Poplin's transparency in her own journey allows you to walk along with her in humble astonishment at God's work through Mother Teresa and the sisters, and through Poplin herself as she opens her life to God's shaping hand. I've already given copies of this book to about 7 different female friends who are in the medical field, in ministry, teaching, or just at home with children, and several of them have not only told me in raving terms how much they are enjoying it but that they've already recommended it to friends themselves. For Christians in academia, Poplin's appendix suggesting a new vision for the university will also be of special interest.
