The Perfect Horse: The Daring U.S. Mission to Rescue the Priceless Stallions Kidnapped

NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • From the author of The Eighty-Dollar Champion, the remarkable story of the heroic rescue of priceless horses in the closing days of World War II

In the chaotic last days of the war a small troop of battle-weary American soldiers captures a German spy and makes an astonishing find—his briefcase is empty but for photos of beautiful white horses that have been stolen and kept on a secret farm behind enemy lines. Hitler has stockpiled the world’s finest purebreds in order to breed the perfect military machine—an equine master race. But with the starving Russian army closing in, the animals are in imminent danger of being slaughtered for food.

With only hours to spare, one of the Army’s last great cavalrymen, American colonel Hank Reed, makes a bold decision—with General George Patton’s blessing—to mount a covert rescue operation. Racing against time, Reed’s small but determined force of soldiers, aided by several turncoat Germans, steals across enemy lines in a last-ditch effort to save the horses.

Pulling together this multistranded story, Elizabeth Letts introduces us to an unforgettable cast of characters: Alois Podhajsky, director of the famed Spanish Riding School of Vienna, a former Olympic medalist who is forced to flee the bomb-ravaged Austrian capital with his entire stable in tow; Gustav Rau, Hitler’s imperious chief of horse breeding, a proponent of eugenics who dreams of genetically engineering the perfect warhorse for Germany; and Tom Stewart, a senator’s son who makes a daring moonlight ride on a white stallion to secure the farm’s surrender.

A compelling account for animal lovers and World War II buffs alike, The Perfect Horse tells for the first time the full story of these events. Elizabeth Letts’s exhilarating tale of behind-enemy-lines adventure, courage, and sacrifice brings to life one of the most inspiring chapters in the annals of human valor.

Letts captures both the personalities and the stakes of this daring mission with such a sharp ear for drama that the whole second half of the book reads like a WWII thriller dreamed up by Alan Furst or Len Deighton. . . . “Letts, a lifelong equestrienne, eloquently brings together the many facets of this unlikely, poignant story underscoring the love and respect of man for horses. . . . The author’s elegant narrative conveys how the love for these amazing creatures transcends national animosities.”—Kirkus Reviews

Amazon.com Review
An Amazon Best Book of August 2016: Many of us have heard the heroic story of the “Monuments Men”—Allied troops tasked with retrieving iconic artworks stolen by the Nazis during WWII. In The Perfect Horse, Elizabeth Letts sheds light on another of Hitler’s infamous heists, that of prized stallions from Hungary, Poland, Yugoslavia, and other parts of Europe, with the aim of employing eugenics to breed the consummate war horse (of course, of course). The harrowing mission to save these magnificent creatures, not just from the clutches of the Nazis, but the advancing--and very hungry—Russian army, was approved by General George S. Patton, evidently no slouch on the polo field. But consent came with a worrying caveat: if things went south, the ragtag band of rescuers were on their own. So why, in the midst of so much human suffering, did these men willingly risk their lives in this equine endeavor? The answers to this question lend Lett’s narrative its emotional power, and are just as relevant today as they were then. Whether you’re a history buff, a horse fan, or can appreciate how doing one positive thing can have enormous impact, The Perfect Horse is the perfect read for you. --Erin Kodicek, The Amazon Book Review

“Hard to put down . . . One need not be an equestrian or horse lover in order to appreciate this story.”—New York Journal of Books

“A truly fascinating chronicle of a dedicated group of horsemen and the risks they were willing to take to preserve the equine icon that is the Lipizzaner. . . . I was hooked from start to finish by Letts’s incredible attention to detail and her gripping account of the events surrounding and leading up to the rescue mission.”—Horse Nation

“Abrilliantly written story about Hitler’s effort to build an equine master race with the finest horses in Europe gathered in one place. As the end neared, these beautiful animals were within days of being slaughtered when a controversial covert mission was planned to rescue the horses and smuggle them to safety.”—PineStraw Magazine

“A riveting and touching piece of equestrian history beautifully told . . . [Letts makes] long dead characters come alive, revealing their passions and fears and flashes of uncommon valor for the sake of horses whose fate lay in their hands. The horses, too, are vivid and unforgettable. . . . Don’t miss it.”—EquiSearch

The author’s elegant narrative conveys how the love for these amazing creatures transcends national animosities.”—Kirkus Reviews

“Straight out of the cauldron of Nazi brutality and war, Elizabeth Letts weaves not just a page-turner but an achingly glorious story of grace and redemption. She embeds us with an international ensemble cast of battle-toughened soldiers. It is through their eyes, and through Letts’s nearly supernatural horse sense, that we fall in love with sensitive Lipizzaner and fine-boned Arabians—the rescued animals who inspired men to reclaim their humanity.”—Vicki Constantine Croke, author of Elephant Company

“In the early years of World War II, the finest purebred horses in Nazi-occupied Europe were stolen by the Germans for experiments to develop the perfect horse. In this spellbinding, heart-stopping book, Elizabeth Letts does full justice to the extraordinary drama of the horses’ rescue in the war’s chaotic final days.”—Lynne Olson, author of Citizens of London

“The Perfect Horse is an enthralling and moving story that I could not put down. This is a riveting and unique perspective on World War II. History buffs and horse lovers will enjoy this amazing tale.”—Molly Guptill Manning, author of When Books Went to War

“Elizabeth Letts’s beautiful prose, woven together with meticulous research, takes you for a ride that will keep you on the edge of your seat until the end.”—Robin Hutton, author of Sgt. Reckless

“Letts deftly tells the harrowing tale of a little-known wartime mission and its unlikely heroes, who understood that the treasures they risked their lives for—some of the world’s finest-bred horses—were a keystone of civilization during a time of perilous threat. This is the best kind of storytelling.”—Joe Drape, author of American Pharoah

“In Elizabeth Letts’s engrossing, richly researched book—a story of horses and heroism during the final days of World War II—we learn that our human instinct to protect our equine friends can cause us to risk even our own lives for their sake. This relatively unknown episode is as moving as it is dramatic.”—Wendy Williams, author of The Horse

Extremely well researched, interesting
By H. Sapiens
I really struggled with this book on two fronts 1) Incredible story / 2) bit disjointed writing at times. Overall, it is a fascinating story spanning decades with an impressive amount of research backing it up. The author does a good job of building up the backstory and approaches the story as a historical account, with included photographs, which I appreciate. In some places, she breaks from the story and gives long historical accounts splashed in with some storytelling that seems flat. These instances for me were difficult to read. I keep flashing to the Cruelest Miles where Salisbury stays in the tale while remaining historically accurate. For the Perfect Horse, I feel like Letts focuses on being historically accurate and then weaving a tale around it. However I think historical nonfiction is one of the most difficult types of writing. I felt had this book been a bit more focused it would have been better, but it was still very interesting if not gripping.

A Message from the Past which Restores our Hope for the Future
By Jean Baldridge Yates
If you can picture a book which covers "two continents and more than eight decades", as author Elizabeth Letts puts it in her acknowledgements, you will begin to get an idea of how remarkable a story The Perfect Horse is.
Letts weaves an intricate tapestry which eloquently tells the story of how the American military manages to rescue priceless horses from imminent death at the end of World War II. These horses include the extraordinary, balletic Lipizzaner, the breathtakingly beautiful Arabians, and the powerful, stocky Russian horses. All would have died if this daring mission had not occurred. Why was this mission undertaken? No one really knows, but all the people who participated were dedicated to the horses. Possibly it was message of hope after all the horrors the world had been through.

A large and varied assortment of courageous men from Europe and the US fell into place, almost haphazardly, to accomplish this rescue. You will read about each of them in this book, and love them all. They manage to trick the Nazis into releasing these precious horses, which they had been hiding in order to breed them eugenically. What united these men on this mission? The answer to that one is easy. They all loved horses.

Each of these men is presented to the reader as a full character. The horses are beautifully depicted as well. When the author writes about them, the love she has for them is so powerful and passionate, yet so honest and true, the reader cannot help but understand what it is that drew her to such a massive undertaking. This chronicle of a barely known story which is a part of World War II, the most horrible war we have ever known, sends us messages from the past which restore our hope for the future. The redeeming actions powerfully illustrate the love of the horses which was evidenced by these allied men. From different countries they joined together on this mission to save these beautiful animals who could not speak for themselves. And save them they did. This is the most uplifting book about WWII I can possibly imagine. You don't have to be a horse lover or a War buff to be mesmerized by The Perfect Horse. You simply have to pick it up and read the first page. You will understand immediately.

Be advised! This book is an incredible but gut-wrenching story of the horrors of WWII
By Almost Lisa
If you liked Unbroken and War Horse, you will like this book. The writing and research in this book are excellent. I can't imagine how the author found all the details she did about the characters and horses, who are long gone. The facts read like a story and the book is both interesting and extremely moving. However, keep in mind that it is a WWII book and some of the scenes are perfectly horrible. I would not recommend this book for kids or sensitive animal lovers. The descriptions of the horses dying of slaughter, exhaustion, injury, and starvation are gut-wrenching and I wasn't even sure I could continue reading it at some points. The author follows the characters and the horses throughout their lives and at the end, I cried all the way through the last few chapters. That said, the whole tale is amazing and a testament to the horrors of war and the incredible courage and perseverance of these dedicated horse lovers. Have Kleenex nearby!

The Tale of a Mysterious Journey
By D. S. Bornus
I read this book back in high school because I was intrigued by the title. I enjoyed it at the time, and through the years I always remembered it as one that really resonated with my gloomy adolescent mind.

Feeling nostalgic, I located a used copy online and read it again, trying to recapture whatever it was that had engaged me so many years before. It was interesting to see the same story after having a bit more experience of life. It was not as deep as it had initially seemed to me before, and yet I noticed and understood many nuances and details that had been opaque to my teenage mind.

The edition I bought included a short biography of the author, who was killed in WWI - this was his only book. It was interesting that the story of the lost love was based on real events in Alain Fournier's short life. It is a glimpse into just one young life that was snuffed out by war, all future promise never to be revealed. As such, it is a story which is nearly as wistful and sad as the novel itself. Just as one wonders "what could have been" if Meaulnes got the girl, so we wonder what other novels Fournier might have gone on to write, had he not been buried beneath the sod of Europe.

A beautiful novel poorly translated
By scooterlover
This excellent novel should not be missed, but please avoid the incompetent translation by Francoise Delisle. Much better translations are available; the one by Frank Davison has received good reviews. Just one example of Delisle's bad translating: she routinely translates "enfants" (which is simply the French word for "children") as "infants." So at the school in Ste.-Agathe we find that there are "classes for infants." Ridiculous. This woman had no business translating French into English.

Not as good for the middle aged
By Bada
I had to read this book in college for a German literature course - which doesn't make much sense since it was originally writen in French and takes place in France. But hey, one character does briefly go to Germany during the course of the story so maybe that was the justification.
Anyway, I have always remembered the book as being fantastic and one of the most emotionally powerful things I had ever read. So much so, that a water stained, yellowed papaerpack copy had come with me over 25 years and 10+ moves to three continents.
So finally last week, I made the time to read it again both to try to remember the specifics of what was so good and also so I could share it with my teenage daughter. Imagine my surprise to find it somewhat simplistic both in storyline and wtiting. The passion of the characters that caused them to make bad decisions in their lives must have seemed heroic to me as a 20 year old but sure seem transparently stupid to me now.
The general theme that you lose what ever you most passionately desire if you actually acheive it, does not really resonate with me now. Sometimes I find it to be true; other times not and in any case most older people don't desire things with the passion of the young.
Anyway, interesting book. Differet from most other things you might read. Worth the time; especially if you are 20 years old.

Fantastic Urban Fantasy Thriller, Love it!!
By My So-Called Book Reviews
I am a huge fan of YA/Fantasy books that have the ability to actually pull in the YA male audience and keep them wanting to read. There are some great series out there that boys, teens and men can get into like Harry Potter, Maximum Ride, Lord of the Rings and Game of Thrones but the problem with these series is that the first two is read by most boys before they enter high school and the other two are typically read after. Sure, I know there’s some guys that will read LOTR and GOT during high school but most of the ones I’ve talked to about it say they’re just too long and complicated to keep their attention. So where are the great fantasy series that girls will naturally gobble up and that guys age 15-18 can get equally excited for?? Enter The Felix Chronicles: Freshmen by R.T. Lowe. While reading this I kept thinking “finally, finally!!” this is something I can recommend to ALL our teens that walk in the school library looking for something a little different, a little dark, and a little more.

This is the story of Felix, a college freshmen who is having to learn how to manage life after the death of his parents. He’s attending Portland College and is starting to make a few friends as he settles into the college life despite his recent grief. I really enjoyed Felix’s character, he’s such an all-around likeable guy and portrayed very realistically. The supporting cast of characters are equally enjoyable and were wonderfully fleshed out and real. My favorite of course was Allison, Felix’s best friend from home who’s always stood by him. I loved that there was no love triangle in this story although I wouldn’t be upset to see Felix and Allison together by the end of the series ;)

Despite the seemingly good times of college life darkness is beginning to spread and strange things are starting to happen, very strange indeed! There’s a sinister serial killer on the loose, one that I have to admit was rather fascinating and I really wanted more of! People are also disappearing into the woods; there are stalkers afoot, secret societies, scary monsters, magic and even assassins! Crazy right? And how does all of this relate together? It’s all tied somehow to Felix, although he really has no idea. I really don’t want to give too much of the storyline and plot away, this is one where it’s best to know just the basics going in. You may be a little confused at first but be patient and have faith in R.T. Lowe, trust him because this author really knows what he’s doing here! Everything he writes has a purpose and a meaning, even if it’s not clear right away.

At nearly 500 pages, some would think The Felix Chronicles to be too long of a read but I actually want my fantasies to be big books, I feel you need it in order to get proper world building. Besides, this is an extremely fast-paced story full of tons of suspense and action! Be warned now, there is a ton of dark violence in this book, some of it quiet disturbing in a fantastically creepy sort of way  Yes, I love this type of creepiness! One of the things I loved most though was all the fast-paced fantasy and horror stuff that was then mixed with plenty of humor, so refreshing!

So, is The Felix Chronicles the perfect read for teen girls and guys, ones that are looking for something with a little meat that walks along the darker side of fantasy? Absolutely! This is an extremely exciting, terrifically twisted, blood curdling good time! I’m so glad to have been given the chance to read it and I’m looking forward to digging in to book 2 as soon as it comes out! I will absolutely be recommending Felix for fans of dark fantasy ages 14 & up and it’s one that I’d LOVE to see stocked in our school library as soon as possible!

Thank you so much to Xpresso Book Tours and to author, R.T. Lowe for providing me with a complimentary copy of this book in exchange for my honest review!

Long, bloody, graphic, exciting, twisting, scary epic fantasy about a chosen one, saving the world, and first year of college
By Barb Taub
What if Harry Potter didn’t know about magic until he went to college? And what if (along with almost everything else to do with dorm life as a freshman) Hogwarts turned out to be more horror story than dark fantasy, and Harry’s fellow students had a tendency to end up as ketchup?

Why am I going into all of this? Well, I was giving it lots of thought as I read The Felix Chronicles: Freshman. I made it through the (long) preface, helped by a warning that it would all make sense later, and that Felix would (eventually) show up. I went through (and then started skipping over) descriptions of beautiful young girls murdered, Bad Things happening in the woods, and a bunch of other disturbing situations, all mixed with the story of Felix’s first year in college. Going away to school can be hard enough, but Felix is still in emotional meltdown following the tragic death of his parents.

But balanced against that is what I think of as the single most useful fantasy trope ever: The Chosen One—in which destiny chooses an ordinary person to be the only one who can save the world as we know it. I’m very sincere here. Without this workhorse trope, we would be missing an unending stream of classics from the bible to the Iliad to Harry Potter, Dune, The Matrix, The Belgariad, Lord of the Rings, Narnia, Star Wars, and on and on.

So is The Felix Chronicles horror or dark fantasy? Yes. It’s a long, bloody, graphic, exciting, twisting, scary story about The Chosen One. Felix finds truths about himself, his parents’ deaths, and his friends—but mostly he finds out about being the one who has to save the world. Even more interesting is his relationship with his best friend, the seemingly-ordinary (or not?) Allison, plus his new roommate, friends, and one very odd groundskeeper at Portland College. He tangles with serial killers, monsters, his own memories, ancient assassins, their descendants, and the seriously stubborn Allison. And that’s just during freshman year.

For me, the book was a bit too long, with too much gruesomely depicted death and carnage. I’m not sure we needed all those bad guys, all that blood, and all those twists. But having said that, I would give The Felix Chronicles four stars out of five. The writing itself is very good, with wonderfully chilling descriptions and settings. And after those five hundred pages, Felix still has questions to be answered, monsters to battle, and three more years of college ahead.

R.T. Lowe: The Felix Chronicles – Freshmen. Paperback. Review by AR Neal, author of After, and flash fiction novel reviewer (http://www.everydayfiction.com/flashfictionblog/category/staff/andree-robinson-neal/)

For urban fantasy fans seeking a change from what has become typical fare, R.T. Lowe presents Freshmen, the first book in The Felix Chronicles series. It is appropriate that a novel, whose prologue begins in the year A.D. 336, would have such heft. At 494 pages, Felix is not for the weak-hearted. The first chapter, The Warning, gives readers a glimpse into the history of a secret battle between … good and evil … perhaps.

The search for a particularly valuable young man begins during the reign of Constantine, but Lowe does not stay in the distant past for long; the reader is whisked through a pulse-quickening exchange between factions that includes a supernatural fight worthy of the big screen, to ‘today’ and are introduced to the primary cast of characters: Felix and Allison seem to be two ordinary freshman students and the description of orientation at Portland College will bring back memories for those who have had the pleasure. However, Felix is not the ordinary young adult embarking on his first experience away from home – it is revealed that his parents were killed in a mysterious accident that has left Felix in a perpetual state of despair. Allison, his hometown friend and confidante, comes with her own familial baggage as a foster child. But more on them in a bit.

Lowe is an expert at scene-shifting. After an idyllic view of Allison and Felix’s introduction to PC, the first darkness appears. The Faceman, Nick Blair, is more than a mindless serial killer.

He leaned forward and his lips crept slowly back over his gums, revealing gold teeth filed to sharp points. He reached out with one hand, and Angela’s eyes bulged as fingers the size of corn cobs stabbed at her face (p. 26).

His sense of purpose and dedication to his mission would be admirable in other contexts. Yet the descriptions of the Faceman’s brutality are frighteningly breathtaking, but he is not the worst creature in this epic tale.

Felix is infused with humor as well. Lucas Mayer, Felix’s roommate, appeared in a reality television show. His wit and banter lighten the mood at just the right points. By the book’s mid-way point, Lucas has not only endeared himself to Felix, Allison, and their other two friends Harper and Caitlin, but has attracted attention from across campus in ways that are unexpected and believable. The exchange with his stalker is something that anyone who watches entertainment news could imagine but its outcome is a jaw-dropper.

There is a visual quality to this story that makes it more than fiction. Descriptions of the ‘dead campus’, Woodrow’s Room, no-man’s land, and Ashfield Forest are vivid and a read of the secret tunnels beneath St. Rose chapel are sure to inspire claustrophobic dreams.

Felix gasped and stumbled back. This was no ordinary wall. Below each plaque there was a rectangular impression etched into the concrete like a pencil mark on a piece of paper. He knew what this was. These were storage lockers. Storage lockers for bodies. He was looking at coffins. They were crammed into the wall from top to bottom, and their reach appeared to extend as far as the tunnel itself (p. 146).

While most of the text focuses on Felix, Allison, Lucas, Harper, and Caitlin, other players – including playboy actor Dirk Rathman, wealthy entrepreneur Lofton Ashfield, mysterious groundskeeper Bill Stout, birthday girl Mia, and the ‘people’ who stalk Ashfield Forest are present and memorable.

“Are you going to hurt me?” she asked timidly.
“Yes.” He smiled, his lips curving up into sharp peaks at the corners like a crescent moon tilted on its side. “I’m going to eat you.” … He opened his mouth and cocked his head like he was going to kiss her.
Mia knew what was coming next and there was nothing she could do to prevent it. Nana was right, she thought, horrified, staring into the mouth of the shark. Nana was right. Nana was— (p. 294).

Felix is built on relationships, which draws readers in. The character Felix’s up-and-down relationships with his friends, fellow football team members, and Bill – as well as his emotional relationships with his parents and his past – make the text come alive. There is just enough historical reference to the Dresdian and the Belus (the two powers at war) and their powers to keep the story in the realm of fantasy while the references to modern revolutionaries (the ERA, whose focus is environmental and ecological justice), college kids and their antics, and social issues offer the urban grounding.

By the last quarter of the text, Lowe has readers on a roller coaster of emotions and experiences as Felix learns who he is. Allison gets to see how his powers work, first hand, and Felix gains new respect for his best friend. As the first book in this series comes to a close, there are more questions than answers: how do the ‘people’ in Ashfield Forest figure into the battle between the Dresdian and the Belus? Who is Bill and which side is he on? Is Felix ‘the one’ or not? The self-proclaimed extremely dangerous individual on the last page is certainly not the same young freshman introduced in the beginning and readers will anticipate the next volume to discover more about Felix’s path to success or destruction.

A leading neuroscientist and pioneer in the study of mindfulness explains why addictions are so tenacious and how we can learn to conquer them

We are all vulnerable to addiction. Whether it’s a compulsion to constantly check social media, binge eating, smoking, excessive drinking, or any other behaviors, we may find ourselves uncontrollably repeating. Why are bad habits so hard to overcome? Is there a key to conquering the cravings we know are unhealthy for us?

This book provides groundbreaking answers to the most important questions about addiction. Dr. Judson Brewer, a psychiatrist and neuroscientist who has studied the science of addictions for twenty years, reveals how we can tap into the very processes that encourage addictive behaviors in order to step out of them. He describes the mechanisms of habit and addiction formation, then explains how the practice of mindfulness can interrupt these habits. Weaving together patient stories, his own experience with mindfulness practice, and current scientific findings from his own lab and others, Dr. Brewer offers a path for moving beyond our cravings, reducing stress, and ultimately living a fuller life.

From the Author
What is mindfulness and what is its power over unhealthy cravings?

The word mindfulness can have many different meanings, especially as mindfulness practices become more popular. At its essence, it is about being fully aware of what is happening right now, in this moment. And in particular, paying attention to the tendency to be pulled into reacting (often habitually) out of wanting to hold on to or get more of a pleasant experience than we might be having, or get rid of an unpleasant experience. Seeing the world and our reactions to it more clearly can help us step out from being under the spell of cravings, so that we can consciously choose our actions.

You have practiced mindfulness for many years. How does a beginner learn to practice its techniques?

In short, it is really helpful to simply begin to notice what cravings feel like in our body. We can even note or label them as a way to experience them more clearly, such as the feeling of tightness or restlessness that arises with a craving.

What new developments in your addiction research are most exciting to you?

We’re very excited to be testing our new mindful eating app (Eat Right Now), which teaches people to work with stress and emotionally-induced cravings for food. It turns out that we can be addicted to junk food very much in the same way as cigarettes or cocaine.

You’ve written that harmful addictions are reinforced by conditions in our world today. Which of those conditions concern you most?

The ready availability of technologies that can foster both craving as well as distraction, such as smartphones. These are great technologies that should include a warning label that they too can become addictive.

Well Done and Solid

Well done, and high-five. I am grateful for the way you informatively sweep across the over-view to bring readers up to 'how we got here', and then go directly to work on the matter...straight ahead. Makes it VERY practical, readable, and digestible to the 'public'; while holding the respect of those of us who have long research and clinical histories in the field of integrating Mindfulness Practice into addiction/recovery on the firm foundation of good science. This is great 'bench to bedside' work. Well done, indeed. Thank you for this meaningful and timely contribution to the work.

Very good aid to understanding (and perhaps thereby lessening) addictive behaviors
By Man in the Middle
As someone who has been overweight more often than not all my adult life, I'm one of the target markets for this book. It took me a while to get through, going about a chapter a day, but I found the effort well worthwhile.

The book is an unusual mix of neuroscience (complete with MRI machines), Skinnerian behaviorism psychology, and Buddhist teachings. Since my father-in-law knew B.F. Skinner personally, and considered Skinner a nut case for starting out his daughters in glass cribs so he could experiment on them, I expected to disagree with some of the behaviorism. That part of the book seemed based on Skinner's book Walden Two, which I haven't read. Even so, I found nothing objectionable in the behaviorist portions of this book - they pretty closely matched what I was taught 50 years ago while earning a minor in psychology about an hour from where Skinner lived.

The Buddhist teachings were also familiar to me from a Philosophy of Religion course in seminary, and again, not objectionable. The neuroscience is out of my area of knowledge entirely, but seemed quite well documented and credible. And somehow, taken all together, it worked as a gestalt (the whole being greater than the sum of its parts.)

What I liked best about the book is that it really helps "peel the onion" (as another teacher once called it) of WHY I eat when I'm not hungry, or more than I should, or foods I shouldn't eat. I'm not much for meditation, and certainly not for the hours on end kind the author likes, but have to agree with his suggestion of taking a moment to just breathe, and staying in that moment rather than focusing elsewhere as a way of noticing what's really going on when I feel an urge to eat. I also found hopeful his assertion that by just noticing and understanding such urges, they can pass away rather than having to be obeyed.

For me, the most helpful aspect of the book in the long run may be that the author also has a matching free smartphone app (Eat Right Now), which leads its user through exercises based on the book, a TEDMED talk by the author, and more. I'm only one day into using it, but am impressed thus far at how well it adds a next step of doing to the understanding gained from the book.

One other thing I particularly like about this book and app is that their approach can be seamlessly and painlessly added to any other diet or eating plan already in use.

For those with other issues than overweight, the author also devotes chapters to several other addictive behaviors, including very hopeful scientific research on its effectiveness in helping people quit smoking.

Overall, very good. I'll update in a few months to document whether or not it actually helped me lose any weight.

Update 1/25/17: I just discovered the videos and community within the EatRightNow app are only free for the first four days, but the rest of the app still works fine thereafter, and those first days of videos are very well done and helpful. One pound down so far.

Review
“Ruth Baer is an experienced clinician, internationally-renowned researcher, mindfulness practitioner, and brilliant teacher who combines warm humor, deep intelligence, and empathic gentleness of heart.”
—Mark Williams, professor of clinical psychology, Wellcome Trust Principal Research Fellow at Oxford University, and coauthor of Mindfulness: A Practical Guide to Finding Peace in a Frantic World and The Mindful Way Through Depression

“This book is like a mindfulness walk. It seamlessly integrates the best of mindfulness training from the major evidence-based care approaches, giving it a sense of breadth of vision, as if you can see across vast distances on your walk. It gently and calmly steps through many domains of self-exploration (rumination, emotion, self-criticism, values, and so on) and yet it never wanders. Each step is small, but each step is purposive, as if you are being guided on your walk by a very wise person who knows where she is going but is willing to let you set your own pace in getting there. And when you are done, you feel alive and whole, as if you have come home, and you are simply happy to be there. This is a walk worth taking—and a book worth reading. Highly recommended.”
—Steven C. Hayes, PhD, foundation professor of psychology at the University of Nevada and author of Get Out of Your Mind and Into Your Life

“Anyone who struggles with difficult emotions or gets trapped in rumination will benefit enormously from this book. Written by one of the leaders in the secular approach to mindfulness, this book guides readers through the different facets of mindfulness and explains how these can be used and practiced to help us find inner calmness, reduce self-criticism, and attain happier states of mind. Knowledgeable, accessible, and practical, this book will be of immense help to many people in how to deal with our rather chaotic, emotional minds.’
—Paul Gilbert, professor of clinical psychology at the University of Derby and author of The Compassionate Mind and Overcoming Depression

“The Practicing Happiness Workbook, Ruth Baer’s latest book, is an open invitation to find out for yourself how mindfulness can add immeasurably to your quality of life. Written with a reassuringly supportive tone, this workbook moves seamlessly between the problems and the promises each of us encounters as it describes how awareness, willingness, and kindness can open truly new vistas of well-being.”
—Zindel V. Segal, professor of psychiatry and psychology at the University of Toronto and coauthor of The Mindful Way through Depression

“Bringing attention to our experience with compassion, patience, and equanimity can be radically transformative. You will be in the hands of a gentle, authoritative guide as Ruth Baer draws on her extensive clinical, scientific, and personal experience to set out a path of mindfulness practice and inquiry. The Practicing Happiness Workbook is an accessible and practical guide to the transformative power of mindfulness in everyday life.”
—Willem Kuyken, professor of clinical psychology, cofounder of the Mood Disorders Centre at the University of Exeter and the Exeter Mindfulness Network, and coauthor of Collaborative Case Conceptualization

“In this wise and compassionate book, Ruth Baer integrates up-to-date research, effective and contemporary mindfulness-based approaches, and her own deep knowledge and understanding of the psychology of human distress and mindfulness meditation practice. Lucid and compelling, the book offers a practical step-by-step guide to awareness, insight, and transformation through mindfulness, enlivened by vivid personal stories and delightful touches of humor. A pleasure to read.”
—Melanie Fennell, author of Overcoming Low Self-Esteem

“This is one of the most carefully designed and written handbooks on mindfulness to date. The author is a senior mindfulness researcher who has sifted through the burgeoning scientific literature to present the essential psychology and practice of mindfulness in a palpable, jargon-free, and highly accessible manner. Strongly recommended for anyone, regardless of background or experience, who wishes to live a happier, less encumbered life.”
—Christopher Germer, clinical instructor at Harvard Medical School and author of The Mindful Path to Self-Compassion

“For many, happiness is an elusive state. Each fleeting moment leaves us clamoring for more. Chasing after happiness can become an exhausting and discouraging enterprise, as our most familiar strategies often backfire. Fortunately, this book offers an extremely effective alternative. Drawing on her extensive experience practicing and researching mindfulness, Baer provides compassionate and practical advice to those seeking to enhance their sense of satisfaction and purpose. Full of extremely practical tools and engaging case examples, this book provides us with the guidance we need to truly enjoy all that life can offer.”
—Susan M. Orsillo, professor of psychology at Suffolk University and coauthor of The Mindful Way through Anxiety

“The Practicing Happiness Workbook weaves together the rigor of science, the beauty of art, the wisdom of reflection, and decades of lived clinical experience to offer us one of the most compelling books on how to cultivate greater happiness and well-being in our lives. Ruth Baer lucidly and brilliantly offers a book that has the power to transform our individual and collective lives.”
—Shauna L. Shapiro, professor of psychology at Santa Clara University and coauthor of The Art and Science of Mindfulness: Integrating Mindfulness into Psychology and the Helping Professions

“In The Practicing Happiness Workbook, Ruth Baer draws from decades of her own and others’ research, as well as her personal experience, to provide concise, accessible tips for living a meaningful, satisfying life. She clearly illustrates the natural human habits or ‘traps’ that can interfere with our well-being, while providing simple, step-by-step guidance to promoting new habits that will enhance and expand readers’ lives. Vignettes and worksheets bring concepts to life and help readers apply them immediately to their own lives. This book may be life-changing for those who have never practiced mindfulness. It provides valuable structure and guidance for those who have practiced but not yet seen the benefits they seek, and useful reminders even for seasoned practitioners. I highly recommend this workbook and plan to buy copies for many people I know.”
—Lizabeth Roemer, professor of psychology at the University of Massachusetts in Boston, MA, and coauthor of The Mindful Way through Anxiety

Terrestrial Biosphere-Atmosphere Fluxes, by Professor Russell Monson, Professor Dennis Baldocchi

Fluxes of trace gases, water and energy - the 'breathing of the biosphere' - are controlled by a large number of interacting physical, chemical, biological and ecological processes. In this interdisciplinary book, the authors provide the tools to understand and quantitatively analyse fluxes of energy, organic compounds such as terpenes, and trace gases including carbon dioxide, water vapour and methane. It first introduces the fundamental principles affecting the supply and demand for trace gas exchange at the leaf and soil scales: thermodynamics, diffusion, turbulence and physiology. It then builds on these principles to model the exchange of water, carbon dioxide, terpenes and stable isotopes at the ecosystem scale. Detailed mathematical derivations of commonly used relations in biosphere-atmosphere interactions are provided for reference in appendices. An accessible introduction for graduate students and a key resource for researchers in related fields, such as atmospheric science, hydrology, meteorology, climate science, biogeochemistry and ecosystem ecology.
