This book showcases some great examples of typography in it's various areas of emphasis. Each section has an interesting writeup, I just wish it went into more depth. But what do you really expect from a graphic design look book.

About the Author

Pavel�Grinfeld is currently a professor of mathematics at Drexel University, teaching courses in linear algebra, tensor analysis, numerical computation, and financial mathematics. Drexel is interested in recording Grinfeld's lectures on tensor calculus and his course is becoming increasingly popular. Awesome Tensor Analysis Book

This review applies to the Hardcover edition.

I definitely wish this book was available when I was doing my PhD in physics. Having used tensor notation in grad. school in various courses I was still hopelessly confused. There are number of Tensor Analysis books available (some of which, unfortunately, I have purchased) but they all, roughly, fall into one of these categories:

1. Too mathy, i.e., even if you can follow the proof of some theorem you still have no idea what was just proven and why you should care. These books typically also have something related to Differential Geometry in the title.
2. Very applied books, e.g., books on General Relativity will typically devote a good portion of the book to tensor analysis. Needless to say, they view Tensor Analysis as a tool and thus, don't painstakingly explain it.
I tried learning tensor analysis from the above two categories but, for the most part, failed, i.e., learned the rules of moving indices around but had no real idea as to what I was actually doing. This brings me to Pavel Grinfeld's "Introduction to Tensor Analysis and the Calculus of Moving Surfaces" book, which is simply the best. Currently, I'm working through Chapter 11 and almost everything has been crystal clear to me thus far. I did have to work through the exercises, which are strategically placed throughout the text. The book is fairly rigorous and may be understood with minimal background (Calculus and some Linear Algebra).

Here is what I like the best about the book:

1. Clear explanation of the notation and why this or that notation works so well.
2. NO awful phrases like "as one can clearly see" or "as it can be shown."
3. Derivations are carried out in great detail with a verbal explanation between each major step. No need to guess, why did the author do step 2 before step 3. The derivations are first outlined and then carried out in a pedantic fashion. This is really good, trust me!
4. Exercises are well chosen to solidify the newly acquired knowledge.
5. Examples and not generalizing things for the sake of generality. I think it is much easier to learn things in 2D and 3D and then see how it can be analogously extended into n-D.

Some remarks to previous reviewers:
1. Yes, the book has some typos; no big deal. Most of them are obvious if you read the book with paper and pencil. If you want to read this book as a novel or use it to simply look up formulas then look elsewhere. This book is NOT an encyclopedia. Here is a link to the typos I have found [...]
2. There is no solution manual as far as I know. But, you don't need one. Most of exercises are of type "show A = B." For other exercises, simply skip forward a section or two and you will find the solution and the reason for the exercise.

Clear introduction to tensor analysis

This book is the third book I've read that touches on the subject of tensor analysis. Previously I had read Schaum's Outline on Vector Analysis which had a chapter on tensor analysis that piqued my curiosity. I then delved more deeply by reading most of Borisenko's Vector and Tensor Analysis with Applications. I found Grinfeld's book in my search for a more clear and thorough explanation of tensor analysis.

Within Grinfeld there is a good mix of exposition and derivation. One thing Grinfeld's book is good at is thoroughly explaining the various notations presented in the literature. This was a great aid in clearing up questions I had after reading the other two works. Grinfeld is also good at building up concepts methodically and completely. And the conversational tone of the text allowed me to survey the subject without getting bogged down. There are about 350 exercises (that I did not tackle) but I did notice there are no solutions given.

In my copy there are numerous typos throughout. However the typos do not appear in any formulas and are in the expository sections of the text. They are actually just poor edits and it is usually easy to see what the author meant to say.

Overall I enjoyed this work, learned a lot, and would recommend it to others. I'm docking it one star because of the typos.

If you'd like learn differential geometry, this is your book

This textbook focuses on tensors, but it is really a textbook on elementary differential geometry. It starts with a super-intuitive description of Euclidean spaces and goes on to cover the most critical concepts in differential geometry and vector calculus: directional derivative, gradient, general coordinate systems, Laplacians, and an outstanding discussion of curvature of mean and Gaussian curvature.

The study of moving surfaces is an unexpected bonus. I was excited to learn that moving surfaces can be described by essentially the same framework as stationary geometry. I discovered a number of unexpected applications of moving surfaces: a proof of the Gauss Bonnet theorem, and shape optimization. The textbook also includes a discussion of fluid films, which are apparently the author's own research. I must admit I didn't understand much of that.

The book's style takes a while to get used to. There are no theorems or proofs, just a continuous narrative mixed with exercises. The lack of a solution manual makes the open ended exercises difficult.

In summary, this textbook was an eye-opener for me regarding the tensor technique and gave me an entirely new (and better) view on differential geometry and vector calculus.

Dr. Hoehner has gathered a vast amount of data, both from Scripture and extrabiblical sources, to support his conclusions concerning key dates in the life of our Lord, among them: - The Date of Christ's Birth - The Commencement of Christ's Ministry - The Duration of Christ's Ministry - The Year of Christ's Crucifixion He carefully documents his position and compares the date available--including a study of Greek words, Roman law, and Jewish customs and prophecy.

About the Author
Harold W. Hoehner received his ThM and Th.D. at Dallas Theological Seminary and his PhD. at Cambridge University. He is Chairman of the Department of New Testament Literature and Exegesis at Dallas Theological Seminary.

invaluable for the serious new testament scholar

In this book, Hoehner tries to elucidate the dates of major events in Jesus' life such as his birth, start of ministry, crucifixion, etc. Hoehner does this largely by using extrabiblical information about the Roman Empire and linking it to data from the gospels, especially Luke.

Hoehner did his Ph.D. on Herod Antipas, qualifying him as an expert on first century Judaic/Roman history. It comes through on every page. The book is a fascinating read because the author masterfully puts together the brief bits of information we read in the gospels, such as which year of Tiberius' reign an event occurred, with extrabiblical Roman history to put together a chronology.

You will learn a tremendous amount about Herod and Pontius Pilate. For example, why is it that Pilate was so weak-willed in the gospel accounts, which contrasts with some of his previous brutalities and strong leadership? The answer comes from a conflict with Claudius involving a man named Sejanus. You will learn why Pilate then gave Jesus over to Herod for him to decide. All this Roman history will really add insight into your reading of the gospels.

Hoehner is also very fair when he establishes dates. He lists all the major views on a given point, and then weighs the pros and cons. He is so careful and rigorous in scholarship, documenting everything that he says, that you will continually go back to this book as a reference.

One conclusion that he fairly decisively argues is that Jesus was crucified on Friday, April 3, AD 33. Some other scholars argue for an AD 30 crucifixion, but Hoehner clearly shows why that view is deficient.

This book is not for everyone: if you are not a fan of history or the type of person who cares exactly when various events occurred, you will not enjoy this book. Even if you do care, as a word of caution, the level of detail in this book is very high and might bore some. The book is not easy to sit and read straight through. Many people may find the book most useful as a reference tool. In fact, my recommendation would be to read his concluding chapter *first*. You get to see where he is going, and read the final chronology. To understand a particular issue, such as "was Jesus crucified on a Wednesday or Friday?" you could then turn back and read the relevant chapter. For the serious New Testament student, there are a number of extremely valuable finds that you will very likely want to go back and re-read later. For example, was the Last supper a Passover meal or not? If so, why wasn't it celebrated on Friday with everyone else? Hoehner masterfully covers this difficult subject with great scholarship and insight.

As an added bonus, Hoehner concludes by reflecting on the meaning of Daniel 9:25-26. Sir Robert Anderson published a book called "The Coming Prince" in the late 1800s on that subject but made an error in his calculation. Hoehner corrects the error to arrive at an astounding conclusion.

The last strength of the book is its brevity. Hoehner is not wordy, so despite the amount of rich content of the book, it is remarkably short. He knows how to express ideas clearly and simply, making this book accessible to a wide readership. Overall, this book is invaluable for the serious New Testament Scholar.

This book should be a helpful companion for any serious student of Holy Scripture. Chronological Aspects of the Life of Christ answers many questions that students of the Bible might wonder about but lack the research tools and ability to answer. Topics covered include:

The Date of Christ's Birth- After surveying the evidence, Hoehner concludes that Christ was born in the winter of 5/4 B. C.

The Commencement of Christ's Ministry- Reasons that Christ's ministry began in the summer or autumn of A.D. 29.

The Duration of Christs' Ministry-Believes that the evidence points to a three and a half year ministry.

The day of Christ's Crucifixion- Concludes that Jesus was crucified on Friday and rose again on Sunday.

The year of Christ's crucifixion- presents a persuasive case for Friday, April 3, A.D. 33.

Daniels Seventy Weeks and New Testament Chronology- This chronology supports a Dispensational understanding of Daniel's seventy weeks. Regardless of one's theological commitments the evidence should be evaluated fairly.

The benefits of this book are many. As the evidence for various dates is presented and evaluated the reader gains an understanding and appreciation for history, and chronology as the science of time. Methodologically, dates and valuable information can be gleaned from items such as ancient coins, Egyptian Papyri, and even headstones in a Roman graveyard. The author hold s to a high view of Scripture and this is demonstrated repeatedly as he works with the historical evidence. This is sure to instill confidence in God's word (2Tim.3:16).

One of the greatest benefits of this book is its accent upon history in an ahistorical age. If we fail to grasp the fact that the Christian faith is rooted in history, Evangelicalism will quickly morph into into a substitute for the genuine article. " By this you know the spirit of God: every spirit that confesses that Jesus Christ has come in the flesh is from God." (1 John 4:2)

THE Book to Sort Out All Those Chronological Details

This volume is invaluable for pastors, teachers of the Word, or laymen serious about studying the life of Christ. It addresses the year of Christ's birth, the year of His death and Resurrection (as well as the days of both of the above), and even deals with the sequence of Daniel's 70 weeks. I have used this book for 22 years of pastoral ministry; it is on my list of books I refuse to loan out because I never want to be without it. The work is conservative, scholarly, and leads to clear summaries and conclusions. A must have reference book!

A More Meaningful Read Thirty Years Later

This book was brought to me by my now deceased grandfather more than 30 years ago. He was a fan of John Gunther Sr., and was deeply touched by John Jr.'s indomitable and loving spirit. As a young teen, I too was impressed with John Jr. I recently thought of the book when someone mentioned the actor Robby Benson. As a nurse and more importantly a mother of three, including a boy of Jr.s age, I felt a need to reread this memoir. I was immediately struck by three things: how far medicine has come since the late 1940s, the beautiful writing style of the author, and of course the depth and commitment of both of John Jr.s parents as they came together despite being divorced to love, and help make their son's journey easier. Part of what really touched my heart was the way each parent met John Jr.s needs in such different manners. This book could have turned into a maudlin "why us" story. The fact that it never did is both a testament to the author himself, and the very special young man at the center of the memoir. It is a wonderful read that spans the test of time. Additionally, I would like to add that despite all of medicine's advances, even now in the 21rst century, a similar diagnosis is just as serious, as I am reading another touching memoir called " Maryn's Hope-Memoir of a Beautiful Life by her mother Annette Cells.

A book for the ages!

I first read this book in middle school in English. I was captivated by it then. Pretty soon after, I saw the movie, which was very well done with great portrayals of Mr and Mrs Gunther and Johnny. One can't help but wonder what contributions John Gunther Jr would have made had he survived. I read this book many times as a teenager and young adult and decided to revisit it. As a mother of 4twenty somethings it was from a different perspective that I read it this time and it gave it even more depth and heartbreaking pathos. I wonder what the medical community would have been able to do for Johnny had he been born a few decades later.

I read this book in college. It has stayed with me through the years. With the recent news of Lauren Hill and Brittany Maynard I thought of this book and wondered how it held up and if it had things to say . So many of contemporary stories seem shallow when they broach this subject.

Death Be Not Proud is a touching today as it was the first time I read it. The forward and prolog are amazing. For many the actual daily progress of the disease may be hard to read. As a retired nurse, it doesn't hit me the way I imagine many laymen may respond to the progress of the disease and the treatments.... But stay with it... Read all the notes and letters at the end...for me it made Johnny alive....to watch him grow in the letters he wrote as a child make it even more touching and sad to see this disease and the loss of such lives. I wonder what he could have done with his life...the same way I wonder about Anne Frank... And now Lauren and Brittany.

Worth Buying

Back Cover: Sophie knew she could never give in to her overwhelming attraction to South American millionaire Alonso (Lon) Galvan. So she agreed to a loveless marriage to a man who left her with a pile of gambling debts. But Lon has never renounced his vow that, one day, Sophie will be his! Now, finding her alone and widowed, it seems his prayers have been answered. At last he can show her what real passion is all about-and that he means to make her his bride.
I really enjoyed this book so I bought it. It was my favorite out of the series. Lon is breath-takingly gorgeous, anyone would fall in love with him. The only problem I had was Sophie's constant and irritable rejections toward him and her trying to hide behind her dead husband whom she didn't even love. But of course she realizes her stupidity in the end and the heat begins...

I really like this story. I thought it was interesting how the characters relationship begins. They met at school, and were inseperable friends along with another guy.

Sophie and Lon had an undeniable attraction, but it was a little too dangerous for Sophie so she chose the other man as her husband. That ended up being very far from the happy ever after she was hoping for. Now her husband is dead and has left her nothing. She is trying to find out what happen to make her a widow. It's a big mystery.

Lon comes to her aid to help her find out what happened to his friend and her husband.

I thought this book was really good. It was nice to see Lon finally get the woman he has wanted forever. It was also good to have the reunion at the end. A nice tale.

Where have I been? Porter?

I have been reading Harlequins for almost 30 years and can truly say that Jane Porter could be one the the best Harlequin writers-ever.

This book had so much depth, character development, plot and emotion it was hard to believe I was reading a Harlequin.

I loved the hero and heroine. I found them believable to the point where I became invested in their story and could not put this book down.

This is only my second Porter. I will be on the look out for more books by Porter. The only recent ones I have seen involve sheiks, in which I have interest.

Two asides: I like that the two books I read have featued American heorines. I do have one quibble, but that is with the title of the book. Why is it called "The Spanaird's Passion" when the hero was Argentinian/English?

Love this book. Mary's reverence to the whole person (body and soul) and its' expressions as it relates to the art of TCM sets her apart. I've take 2 cosmetic acupuncture courses and have always felt there was something missing. This book has really tied it together for me.

A must for knowledge workers!

This book should be 'the bible' for everyone involved in knowledge management processes. Holland, as one of the complexity theory founders, decribes the essentials of how complex adaptive rules, in relation to the variability of the environment, determine knowledge dynamics and learning capabilities.
Key message of the book is the way that processes of induction, both cognitive and subcognitive, determine rule making, rule adaptation and environment modeling.
With this work Holland (et al.) was the first to close the gap between cognition, complex adaptive systems and knowledge processing. He also provides a sound computational base for the theories presented, opening possibilities for implementation of 'the induction theory' in real world applications.
