A REMARKABLE COMPILATION

Well let's just iterate that if you desire the most comprehensive examination of the Allison engine then this is certainly the work for you.
Have interfaced with the author and found him to be perhaps the most knowledgeable guy on the planet re the early renditions... arguably with the possible exception of Joe Yancey of Yancey Allison in Rialto, CA.
Do by the way, plan on cobbling together a history of the Allison as it pertains to the Lockheed P-38 this year, God willing and the creek don't rise....
Expect Dan Whitney and Joe Yancey to be at this year's 2010 Reno Air Races in September
as they never miss if they can help it, according to what I have heard. This would potentially be an opportune time to touch bases with them if you have some queries left unanswered.

complete and exhaustive but not light reading

This is a technical history for aircraft engine fans. Complete and exhaustive but not light reading. You really have to be interested in the subject and understand the background of WW2 aircraft engines to make it through this book. I read "Allied Aircraft Engines of World War II" first and was prepared for the more detailed technical and historical account of the Allison engine provided in this book.
